Mark cherished his time with Christine and their children in Underhill. Mark’s greatest joy in life was being a father to his three children. His passing leaves behind a legacy marked by both sorrow and reflection. Struggling with alcoholism through his life, Mark wished to convey his deepest regret for not being the husband and father his family deserved. His absence during pivotal moments weigh heavily, yet his family cherishes the moments of connection and love they shared. Mark’s memory serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of human frailty and enduring power of forgiveness. He will be remembered for his moments of warmth and love amidst the shadows of his struggles. May he finally find peace and may his family find solace in their memories of him.
Mark enjoyed the simple pleasures of fishing, hunting, camping, and landscaping. Whether he was casting his line, sleeping under the stars, or immersing himself in the tranquility of nature, Mark's love for the outdoors was palpable. In the serene solitude of the wilderness, Mark found solace and peace. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever linger in the rustle of the leaves, the gentle lapping of the waves, and the quiet serenity of the great outdoors.

Cheryl Jane Burghdurf - March 08, 1945 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: Cheryl Burghdurf, 79, of Middlesex, VT, began her spiritual adventure at 12:26pm, on April 21, 2024 after a long battle with Myelofibrosis, a blood cancer. She was born March 8, 1945 in Auburn, NY. The middle child of James and Erta Burghdurf, Cheryl was grateful to her favorite older brother, Jimmy, and to her favorite younger brother, Gary, for their laughter and love. Cherie graduated from SUNY-Cortland and the University of Maine-Orono. She received her Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. She taught literature and composition at Auburn Community College (NY), Central Wyoming Community College, Slippery Rock University (PA), and, for twenty years, at Champlain College. She proudly said, “I know my teaching made a difference for many, many students.”
Cherie’s connection to Nature was evident in her celebration of all living things—except ticks and gout weed—and in her joyful discovery of another special rock for her collection. Her passions included gardening, tennis, basketball, bicycling, nordic skiing and skating, hiking, bird watching, and camping, especially in Lola, a VW camper van that was “home base” for many trips to New Mexico during retirement. Cherie found delight in reading and writing poetry—especially Haikus—and was a devoted student of Mary Oliver’s poetry. She practiced Transcendental Meditation throughout her life. Her singing and seemingly innate ability to combine three songs into one delighted and amazed All. Her unrehearsed dancing was not to be forgotten.
Cheri was especially thankful for the opportunity to restore and share an 1848 Classic Cape style home with Jayne Shoup, her companion and wife of 38 years who survives. Additional survivors are her canine guides, Daffi and Diggins and feline guide, Alfie; life long friends Cindy Haynes, Ann Keough, Jill Matthews, and Emjae; brothers Gary and Jimmy; Sister-in-law, Carol; nieces Lori and Kristi; nephews Bret, Jim, and Brian Burghdurf; and her much-more-than-just colleagues from Champlain College, Joanne Farrell, Janice Gohm-Webster, and Susyn Dees.
She was predeceased by her parents; fiancé John Marshall Snyder who died at the battle of Khe Sanh, Vietnam; canine guides Jessica, Dilsey, Dewey, Frony, and Doogan, and feline guides Emily, Paul, and Homer. Cherie was transfusion dependent during the latter stage of her Myelofibrosis battle and requested friends, family, and All who are able to please donate blood and/or platelets to the Red Cross. Cherie and Jayne are especially grateful to blood donors, whose generosity resulted in more time for the couple to love and laugh together. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Vermont Cancer Center, Burlington, VT. When asked what she most hoped others would do in her honor, Cheri replied, “Love each other.”
A gathering to celebrate Cheri will be held later.

Sylvia Ann Weinhagen - December 14, 1935 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: Sylvia A. Weinhagen of Burlington, VT died on April 16, 2024 with family by her side. She was 88, so what she died from is immaterial. What is important is that it was a long, full life.
Long and full does not mean easy. Sylvia was tough, resilient, and feisty until the very end. She had a real wisdom that came from life experience. She started life in Essex Junction, Vermont as Sylvia A. Stanton, the first child of Thomas and Genevieve (Neill) Stanton. She spent her youth on River Street, picking berries near the banks of the Winooski River before IBM staked their claim. She was the daughter of the village "ice man" who provided ice cut from the Winooski River.
After graduating from Essex Junction High School in 1953, her youthful path led from Vermont to Wisconsin, where she worked for the Wisconsin Tax Department. She logged many miles on a Harley Davidson, touring with her friends in the Family Motorcycle Club based in Madison, Wisconsin. Shifting gears and marriages, she moved to British Columbia, to Florida, and then back to Vermont in the 1970s to raise her two youngest sons. In her mid-forties, as a single mom with little money but much determination, she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated from the Fanny Allen School of Nursing in 1982 and spent the next 20 years working at Fanny Allen Hospital, Fletcher Allen Hospital (UVM Medical), and Cathedral Square.
Her success as a nurse was evidenced by the heartfelt thanks she received from cancer patients and their families during the years she worked on Shepardson 4 at Fletcher Allen Hospital. What was her super power? She combined critical commentary (yes, even biting sarcasm) with humility and empathy. This endeared her to her patients, her coworkers, her friends, as well as fellow residents and staff at Gazebo Senior Living and the Converse Home where she spent the last chapter of her life.
Outside of work, she was a Master Gardener who excelled at arranging beauty in small spaces. Whether it was purchasing and planting flowers for dozens of flower boxes at Village Green in Essex Jct., cultivating an amazing patio garden complete with her favorite Japanese Maple Tree, or tending to her windowsill orchids, Sylvia’s green thumb and design aesthetic were legendary. She deeply respected the natural world, especially wildlife like wolves, owls, and frogs. A Vermonter by birth and upbringing, she also loved the ocean – particularly the waves, the beaches, and the sea glass of the Maine coast. Although no services are planned, we will honor her by scattering her ashes in those ocean waves.
Her siblings include: Mike Stanton (deceased); Larry Stanton (South Burlington); and Cathy Stanton (Carmel Valley, California). Her three sons are: John Bergin (Seattle, Washington); Robert Frydenlund (Swanton); Alex Weinhagen (Burlington). Grandchildren include Caleb Weinhagen (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Sarah Jacobs (Jay, Maine). Extended family include her best friend and eventual daughter-in-law, Leslie Frydenlund (Swanton) and Leslie’s two daughters: Cheryl Underwood (Georgia, Vermont) and Nikki Ellison (Fairfax).
Sylvia did not mince her words. Growing up during World War II, she understood the danger of fascist “leaders.” She would tell you fascist “leaders” exist today, in plain sight and just as dangerous. You can honor Sylvia’s memory by voting for democracy in November. You can also make a donation to the ACLU or the National Wildlife Federation.

Beverly Jane Herrick - October 07, 1939 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: Beverly Jane (Smith) Herrick a true warrior and beloved by all who knew her, passed away at the McClure-Miller Respite House on Friday, April 12th, 2024 after battling both neuroendocrine and lung cancer for years. She was 84 years old. The family thanks the staff at the Respite House for their support and the tenderness with which they cared for Beverly in her last days.
Beverly was born on October 7, 1939 in Hanover, New Hampshire to Wardie and Doris Smith (Horton). Beverly’s early years were spent in Keene, NH where she attended a one room school house. She had fond memories of walking to a house nearby, pulling a wagon in the spring and fall and a sled in the winter, to retrieve the hot lunches made for the students by the woman who lived there.
Beverly’s family later moved to Taftsville, VT, where Wardie worked as a mechanic and night watchman. Beverly attended Woodstock High School where she excelled academically, played snare drum in the marching band and was crowned homecoming queen her senior year. Upon graduating in 1957, Beverly declined an offer to have college paid for her by a local family and instead chose to take a job as secretary to the principal of Woodstock High School. It was here that she met the love of her life, John B. Herrick who had just taken a teaching job at the school. They were married six months later and had two children.
Work brought the young family to Burlington, Vermont where John taught at Edmunds Middle School. Beverly worked many years for the Chittenden Bank in downtown Burlington and made many close friends. After retiring from the Chittenden, she worked at City Drug and volunteered for years for both The Fletcher Free Library and the Ethan Allen House, both in Burlington, VT. Beverly was a regular supporter of the VT Food Shelf and the VT Young Writer’s Project. She wasn’t a joiner - with the exception of her bowling league - but enjoyed hosting get togethers with family and friends as well as reading, gardening, walking, and exploring Vermont. She was fiercely independent and cared for her husband during his battle with Alzheimer’s and Cancer right up until he died. Her love for him was unconditional and inspiring.
Beverly is predeceased by beloved husband John. Many fun times and memories were made during their long marriage. They had two children who are forever grateful to have had such loving, supportive, and accepting parents. She was also predeceased by her parents and her sister Margaret Wilson. She leaves behind her children, Laurinda Hulce and her husband, Barry; her son, Christian Herrick; and her grandchildren: Zoe Hulce, Gwynevere Hulce, Ethan Herrick, and Zander Herrick. She also leaves many other beloved friends and family members both near and far.
The family would like to thank Leon Emmons and his wife Linda for their support of Beverly over the years but especially since the death of her husband John who Leon had been friends with since they were both 5 years old.
Special thanks also to Beverly’s niece and life long friend, Lois Silva, who spent the last few days of Beverly’s life with the family at the Respite House and provided more support than can be put into words.
Beverly will be forever missed. A small graveside service will be held at a later date to fulfill Beverly and John’s wish that their ashes be combined and then buried at Lakeview Cemetery on North Avenue in Burlington.
The family asks that donations honoring Beverly be made directly to either the Chittenden County Humane Society, The Vermont Foodshelf, or the McClure-Miller Respite House.

As always her timing was impeccable, following the once-in-a-lifetime total Solar Eclipse!
Anne was blessed with over 13 extra years through a heart transplant in 2010. While not all of them were easy, they were all a bonus for someone diagnosed with a failing heart at age 30.

In both Burlington and Boulder, as with anywhere she spent time, she developed deep friendships and touched many people. Anne was the kind of person who you instantly enjoyed. Christopher William Baker - May 10, 1977 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: Christopher William Baker, age 46, passed away unexpectedly at his family home in Essex, VT on Tuesday April 2, 2024, from a pre-existing heart condition. Chris, son of Christina and William Baker, was born in Bennington, VT on May 10, 1977. Chris received his education from elementary through high school in the town of St. Albans, VT, proudly graduating from Bellows Free Academy in 1995. After graduation, he attended the University of Vermont, graduating in May 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in small business management. He met his wife and soulmate Sandra Trotter in 2002, and it was love at first sight—at least through Chris’s eyes. He confidently announced to his friends and specifically his brother, “She’s the one.” Chris and Sandra joined in marriage on May 30, 2004.
As a young adult, Chris was a staple on Church Street in Burlington, working for several years at a handful of local establishments. He was a natural behind the bar, greeting and meeting friends and strangers alike, making them feel welcome upon arrival. While working the bar scene in Burlington, Chris was also employed by the Vermont Expos minor league baseball team, maintaining the historic grounds of Centennial field. Chris transitioned naturally to a position in sales, pursuing a career in digital marketing for several companies until he and his eventual business partner, Ben Driver, established and grew Driven Marketing, which proudly serves businesses throughout northern Vermont.
Chris was a lot of things to a lot of people but, most importantly, to the Essex community, he was “Coach Baker.” He loved coaching every sport at every level but took the most pride in coaching teams that had one of his daughters on the roster. Most recently, Chris coached and led the Essex Girls Varsity softball program. He had the opportunity last season to coach two of his three daughters on the same team in the same season—one to remember. Chris was more than an athletic coach; he was a life coach and his players adored him. They appreciated and acknowledged the lessons he taught through sport and are better people as a result.
Chris was the life of every party and if he was not, you were not at the same party. He loved country music and owned songs as he sang them, knowing all the lyrics, belting them out in an emotional and enthusiastic manner. He sounded best when he was in the shower, the acoustics transformed his untrained voice into a combination of Garth Brooks and Zach Bryan.
Chris loved tradition and was a true sentimentalist. These rituals and special moments mattered to him, and he insisted on bringing family and friends together to celebrate everything. Beneath that tough, intimidating façade, he was all heart. He could and would unforgivingly cry on a moment’s notice, bearing his soul for all to see.
Chris was a “girl-dad.” He was the best girl-dad ever; just ask his daughters. He challenged them to reach their full potential and was proud of everything they accomplished and will remain proud watching over them as they continue to achieve amazing things, carrying on his gift for them.
He leaves us all a precious gift, his loving and adorable family beginning with his best friend and wife Sandra, and his three incredibly talented and beautiful daughters, Maisie, Anna, and Ryan. Chris is also survived by his father, William Baker of St. Albans, VT; his brother, Jeremy Baker and wife Stacy, including their children Tommy and Laurel of Londonderry, VT; sister-in-law, Amy Hillman and her sons, Will, Wesley, and Henry of Plymouth, MA; brother-in-law, Richard Trotter of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; in-laws, Wayne and Dori Trotter and Patricia Trotter, all residing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; many aunts and uncles; and an abundance of loving cousins.
Chis was pre-deceased by his grandparents, Thomas and Maisie Dockum of Bennington, VT and Robert and Wilma Baker of Cape Cod, MA. Robert and Wilma were responsible for Chris’s love affair with Cape Cod. They spent their final years in St. Albans, where Chris and Grandpa Bob could be found discussing sports, specifically the Boston Red Sox, whom they both loved passionately.
Sadly, Chris was pre-deceased by his mother Christina Mae Dockum Baker. Chris was the apple of his mother’s eye and, following her passing, Chris shared with his brother Jeremy that he felt like “a sailboat in the wind that lost its rudder.” Chris and his mother shared a special bond that was obvious to all that were fortunate enough to know them.
There are too many networks of special friends to mention but we would like to acknowledge them collectively—they know who they are. Finally, we want to thank Chris’s mentor, Dan Marlow of St. Albans, VT, who coached and led Chris’s 1994 BFA soccer team to the Vermont State Championship—a proud achievement that he may have mentioned to everyone a time or two. “Mr. Marlow,” currently the Athletic Director at BFA St. Albans, was a guiding light in Chris’s life. Dan, we love you and everything you did for and taught Chris, our father, husband, brother, son, and friend. He was a better man because of you.

He grew up in Jericho and Essex and attended Mount Mansfield Union High School. He graduated from the Franklin Institute in Boston with a trade certificate in Automotive Technology in 1973.
David had a long career in sheet metal management and project estimation. Later in life he picked up an amateur hobby of wildlife photography which brought him a lot of joy. David got the most pleasure out of life helping people and being able to take care of things for others.
We will miss spending time with him in his home in Underhill, going to all his haunts to visit old friends and listening to the stories of growing up in Chittenden County, which he never ran out of.

Ruth Esther Ginn - July 31, 1936 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Esther Ginn, also known as Ruthie, passed away peacefully at Maple Ridge Memory Care on March 25, 2024, at the age of 87 in Essex, VT. Born on July 31, 1936, in Scranton, PA, Ruth was a devoted wife, loving sister, beloved mother and adoring grandmother.
Ruth lived by faith. She embraced and embodied God’s grace with gratitude, generosity, and kindness. She was incredibly strong spirited and courageous. She was a selfless, forgiving, and non-judgmental individual who exhibited resilience, honesty, and hard work throughout her life. Ruth would ensure everyone else’s needs were met before hers and expected nothing from anyone. Ruth respected and loved everyone no matter what color, race or creed and had an uncanny ability of finding the good in everyone and every situation. She was truly one of a kind.
Ruth spent much of her of her life in Los Angeles, CA. She was so very proud to have worked for the City of Los Angeles for over 30 years. She worked her way up having held multiple positions, but her most cherished role was being Senior Secretary with the Los Angeles Police Department. Her years working with the Police Department were filled with so much joy, success and shopping. Ruth absolutely loved shopping for her work suits, dresses and shoes as she had the utmost respect for her position and what it represented.
Ruth ultimately retired in Hyannis, MA where she was able to buy a custom-built home which was a testament to her hard work over the years. She was so proud of that home always wanting to show people her beautiful yard filled with rose bushes and rhododendrons’, amazing deck, and cute little breakfast nook. Every morning she woke up grateful and blessed while never forgetting her very humble beginnings.
However, Ruth’s most sacred and treasured gift in life was her family, especially her two granddaughters Amanda and Kimberly. Her world revolved around them. She was always there for every memorable moment, whether good or bad. She continuously filled their lives with encouragement, support and so much love and in return they made her heart whole and complete. She was there for their first breaths of life and by God’s grace they were both there for her last breaths of life.
Ruth’s personality and charm could be best described as The Legendary Energizer Bunny. She really did keep going and going and going. When Ruth wasn’t spending time with her granddaughters, she loved spending time with her sister Grace and bother-in-law Musty. She also always enjoyed seeing and spending time with her nieces, nephews and great grandchildren who loved her dearly. When she wasn’t working her part-time job in her retirement or translating her shorthand notes from her homeowner’s association meetings, she was going to the beach, traveling, tending to her yard, going to theater productions, exercising, reading mystery novels, watching Columbo, helping and editing her grandchildren’s homework and, of course, shopping.
Ruth believed wholeheartedly that life is a beautiful gift from God and that He blessed her with a steadfast determination to persevere no matter what life presented her and in the end she blessed everyone with her unwavering and unconditional love.
Ruth’s family, which includes all her wonderful caretakers and staff at Maple Ridge Memory Care, will miss her dearly. Ruth was preceded in death and reunited by her husband Harold Ginn, as well as by her Father Said Ayoub, her Mother Esther Deretic and Stepfather Theodore Deretic, her sister Grace Ahmed and brother-in-law Musty Ahmed. She is the beloved mother of Karen Rogers and her husband Walter Rogers of Essex, VT and Rebecca Frankel and her husband David Frankel of Fairfield Glade, TN. Devoted grandmother of Amanda Meyers and her husband Matthew Meyers of Cumming, GA and Kimberly Rogers and her companion Augustine Russo Jr. of Westford, MA. Adoring great grandmother of Brittany O’Bryan of Brooklyn, MI, Kimberly Burns and her husband Isaac Burns of Cumming, GA and Katherine O’Bryan of Cumming, GA. Doting great great grandmother, auntie, cousin, friend and neighbor to many.

George Chapman Singer - June 23, 1927 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Essex Junction)
Obituary Preview: George Chapman Singer, 96, of Burlington, Vermont, died on March 9, 2024, after a short illness.
George was born on June 23, 1927, and grew up in Yonkers, New York, the son of Virginia Chapman and Albert H. Singer. A 1944 graduate of Scarborough School, Scarborough, New York, George met his future wife, Gloria, in the ninth grade. After graduation, he accepted an appointment to Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. He served as a midshipman in the US Merchant Marine on the SS Alcoa Pointer, which hauled bauxite from Venezuela to New Orleans.
After the war ended, George earned a BA in English at Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Days after graduation, on June 16, 1950, George and Gloria were married in Zion's Episcopal Church in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Two months later, they settled in Philadelphia, where George earned an MBA with Distinction at The Wharton School.
George began his business career as a registered representative on the New York Stock Exchange, working initially for Shields & Company, while he and Gloria began their family. Over time they gradually moved north from Yonkers to Dobbs Ferry to North Tarrytown to Bedford, New York, before moving to Burlington, Vermont, in 1971. In Burlington, George managed W.E. Hutton & Company’s office, before opening a regional office for Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley) in 1976. He retired in 1993.
George learned to ski at Dartmouth and soon taught Gloria this new sport. As his family grew, so did their love for skiing. George first skied at Mad River Glen in 1960, and within a few years it became his family’s skiing home. George skied until he was 86 years old and enjoyed taking his grandchildren down his favorite trails.
Books were an enduring passion for George. His fascination with rare books began when he was a teenager, and he enjoyed collecting throughout his life. Over many years George amassed a significant collection of Adirondack books and prints. After retirement, George and Gloria started a small business, The Ashley Book Company, which specialized in rare forgeries and private press books.
George was a long-time member of the Grolier Club of New York City, where he served as the organization’s representative to the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies. In that capacity, he attended many conferences and was a valued expert in the field of antiquarian books. He donated most of his valuable collections to Dartmouth’s Rauner Library. Ever a student, in 1974 George embarked on a graduate degree in English at UVM, focusing on the study of Middle English and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
A lifelong runner, George started jogging in the early 1960s long before it was popular. He ran and rode his bike into his early 90s. Starting in 1963, George climbed the Adirondack 46 over the course of 38 years, summiting his last peak with his grandson, Christopher.
After George’s first visit to Lake George in 1941, he spent time “at the lake” every year of his life. He raced sailboats and motorboats, waterskied, and made lifelong friends. Together with his father and Gloria, George established a family camp on Lake George’s Heart Bay that has brought together five generations of his family. He was a member of the Northern Lake George Yacht Club for nearly 75 years. George was always up for fun and a little mischief -- and narrowly got away with a few of his escapades. As a teenager and young man, George was known to waterski at night and once sailed the length of Lake George in a borrowed Star overloaded with “provisions.” George entertained his children and grandchildren by occasionally swallowing a fly or spider!
For decades, George was an active supporter of Lake George and the Ticonderoga community. He served on the boards of the Lake George Association, the Lake George Land Conservancy, and Fort Ticonderoga’s National Council Advisory. George was deeply committed to the revitalization of Ticonderoga, and he believed in the life changing power of higher education. To that end, George established a scholarship fund for area high school graduates to continue their education in skilled trades.
George was predeceased by his wife, Gloria, and is survived by his children, Lauren (Peter Waite), Robert, and Margaret (Michael Huffman). He leaves nine grandchildren, Hillary (Brendan Condit), Christopher (Kirsten Lundquist), and Hannah (Dan Glatt) Waite; Hans, Isabel and Nina (twins) Singer; Peter, Samuel, and George Huffman; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration at Lake George this summer to gather George’s family and friends. A small service is planned for April 4th at 3:00 p.m. at All Saints Church in South Burlington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake George Land Conservancy/George C. Singer Education Fund, Ticonderoga Alliance/George C. Singer Skilled Career Scholarship Endowment Fund, or Fort Ticonderoga/Education Programs Fund.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral arrangements, and any memorial services. They can also help notify people who may not have been aware of the person's death.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or via email, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they want to be remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, whereas an obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy. Death notices are often used for people who prefer a more private or low-key announcement.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humor or personal anecdotes can help make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Are online obituaries free?

Some online obituary websites offer free listings, while others may charge a fee for premium features or longer-term archiving. Be sure to check the website's pricing policies before submitting your obituary.

How long will my online obituary remain available?

This depends on the website's archiving policy. Some sites may keep obituaries available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the website for their specific policies.

Can I edit or update an existing obituary?

In most cases, yes. Contact the publication or online obituary website directly to request changes or updates to an existing obituary.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or online obituary website immediately to request a correction. They will work with you to rectify the mistake as quickly as possible.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries to access archived copies of newspapers. Many online genealogy resources also provide access to historical obituaries.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of someone's passing and reach a wider audience. You can share a link to the online obituary or create a post with key details.

Is it appropriate to include negative information in an obituary?

In general, it's best to focus on celebrating the person's life and accomplishments rather than highlighting negative aspects. Obituaries should be respectful and dignified tributes to the deceased.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

Sensitivity and tact are essential when navigating complex family relationships in an obituary. Consider consulting with all parties involved to ensure accuracy and respect for everyone's feelings.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

Dont hesitate to ask for guidance from a funeral home director, grief counselor, or trusted friend or family member. They can offer valuable insights and support during this difficult time.

Can I create a video tribute or slideshow for an online obituary?

Yes! Many online obituary websites offer multimedia features that allow you to create video tributes or slideshows celebrating the person's life. These can be powerful ways to honor their memory.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online obituary remains accessible over time?

Select online obituary websites that offer permanent archiving options or consider creating a digital archive of your own using cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox.

What if I need additional support or guidance during this difficult time?

Dont hesitate to reach out to professionals such as funeral home directors, grief counselors, or bereavement support groups for emotional support and practical guidance.
