Jan P. Dickler - April 19, 1948 - March 02, 2022

Departed: 03/02/2022 (Binghamton)
Obituary Preview: A librarian by day, a fiction and poetry reader by night, Jan Blake Dickler spent many of her 73 years surrounded by books.
Her life story defied any easy classification. In the Dewey Decimal System, you might find it in the 700s (for the arts) or 296 (for Judaism).
Here’s what the blurb on the book jacket would say: Born to an Australian immigrant with a seventh-grade education, Jan became a highly educated librarian. A Catholic schoolgirl, Jan grew up to be an observant Jew whose grandchildren called her Bubbe. A confirmed feminist and advocate for progressive causes, Jan also sewed Halloween costumes for her kids and frequently took on elaborate craft projects.
If you open the book to the first chapter, the story begins in Queens, N.Y. That’s where Jan was born to Raymond Blake and his war bride, Jean, on a spring day in 1948. Jan was a frequent subject of her father’s photography. Though he died when she was just 7 years old, his creative eye lived on in family snapshots.
Jan and her mother spent a year or so back in Australia, eventually returning to New York, where Jan attended Valley Stream South High School and Jean remarried. Jan took Latin and French and every art class she could find.
College brought Jan to Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, where she studied philosophy and joined protests against the Vietnam War. After graduation in 1970, she married Paul Dickler, a South High classmate. They went to all the cool concerts and made a home in Pennsylvania.
Jan and Paul moved to Doylestown, Pa., and had two children, Rachel and Jesse, who shared their love of camping, environmentalism, art and learning. Summertime family vacations were spent on the road as they traveled across the United States and Canada as well as the United Kingdom. During these years, Jan converted to Judaism and studied Hebrew. She helped manage a bookstore, a small private school and a synagogue office.
Jan and Paul divorced in 1989, and she went back to college. Jan earned a master’s in library science from Drexel University. She worked as an archivist for Campbell’s Soup and opened a small jewelry business before taking a position with the Bucks County Free Library.
Jan cultivated a rich circle of female friends in the 1990s. She attended the Philadelphia Folk Fest, the Dodge Poetry Festival and lots of concerts on the lawn at Upper Merion during these years. She also took classes at the local community college, where she learned darkroom photography techniques.
When Jan retired as branch manager of a library in 2016, she chose to spend the final chapter of her life back in upstate New York. She moved to Binghamton to be closer to her daughter and her family. Jan drove her grandkids to Hebrew school, volunteered in the synagogue food pantry, joined a couple of book clubs and enjoyed reading and watching British television dramas.
She died March 2 of congestive heart failure, but her story will continue to shape the lives of her children, grandchildren, sisters, friends and former colleagues. She is remembered as many people’s honorary Jewish mom, as a kind and knowledgeable co-worker and as captain of the local branch of the Grammar Police.
She is survived by her children, Rachel Coker and her husband, Eric, of Apalachin, N.Y.; and Jesse Dickler and his partner, Debbie Manoff, of Philadelphia, Pa.; her sisters, Elizabeth Jensen-Forbell and her wife, Ruth, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Coleen Forbell and her partner, Brian Berlin, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and her granddaughters, Sophie and Charlotte Coker, of Apalachin, N.Y.
Funeral services will be held at noon March 6 at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, with burial following at Westlawn Cemetery. The family will observe shiva from 6-8 p.m. March 6, 7 and 8 at the Cokers’ home, 7 Laine Court, Apalachin, N.Y.
The noon service at Temple Concord will be livestreamed at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81994069468?pwd=THc3ek1jN2pFOXRxTktLbEVuVEN4UT09 or join with meeting ID 819 9406 9468 and passcode 055110.
Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Concord or to the Sierra Club.

Anna Marie Spawn - April 28, 1985 - December 13, 2021

Departed: 12/13/2021 (Binghamton)
Obituary Preview: Anna Spawn, of Binghamton
It is with overwhelming grief and sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Anna Spawn, 36, of Binghamton, NY.  Anna lived life on her own terms – embracing every moment. Nothing stopped her from enjoying what she loved to do. Anna fearlessly battled cancer head on with the same courage and strength she exuded throughout her entire short life.  Anna is predeceased by her father, Robert Spawn, and her brother, Nicholas Spawn.  Anna was the epitome of a strong single mother and leaves behind three beautiful children: Carter 17, Jordan 11, and Keaton 7. She is survived by her mother Patti Nelson Corrente, two brothers, Wayne and Patrick Spawn, a sister Dawn Sayman, and a large extended family of grandmothers, aunts, and cousins. Anna was also a godmother to Zac and Tate, who she adored, and more like a sister to her closest friends.  Anna grew up in Newark Valley, NY, and actively maintained her childhood friendships. There was rarely a weekend she didn’t have plans for a baby shower or birthday party. No celebration was complete without her.  Anna had a small-town-girl heart of gold. Simple joys and meaningful relationships were what mattered most to her. She religiously planned her children’s parties’ months in advance - always ordering sensational cupcakes from the same friend, every year, times three.  Anna was sharp and organized, meticulous about dates and anniversaries, and never missed an opportunity to recognize the people she loved.  Anna started working for Broome Developmental Services in 2007. She was incredibly hard working, reliable, diplomatic, and diligent in caring for the people that resided both at the center, and most recently at a residential facility - where she will be sorely missed by coworkers and individuals she cared for.  The family wishes a heartfelt thank you to the many friends who assisted in the care of the children, supplied meals and provided support this challenging year. Carter, Jordan, and Keaton have all inherited their mother’s fierce spirit and resilience and will be always surrounded by the love Anna gave generously throughout her life.

Daniel James Corser - January 28, 1954 - November 26, 2021

Departed: 11/26/2021 (Binghamton)
Obituary Preview: Binghamton, NY  -  Daniel James Corser, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend passed peacefully into the loving arms of the Lord on November 26, 2021. Daniel was predeceased by his father, Herbert Corser; his sister, Sheryl Corser O'Brien; his brother-in-law, David Mann; and many beloved friends and relatives. Danny is survived by his mother, Mary Louise Corser; his brother and sisters, David (Jennifer) Corser,  Maureen (Scott) Singer, and Eileen Mann; his Aunt Patricia Guinane; his much-loved nieces and nephews: Kelly, Kerry, Kevin, Cara, Maximilian, Mylea, and Mara; many  treasured cousins, and lifelong friends.
Danny grew up on the west side of Binghamton where he attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School and Catholic Central High School.  He was proud to be a Crusader and a member of the remarkable Class of 1972 at CCHS.  Danny went on to attend Columbia University where he pursued his studies as an English major.  He loved learning and excelled in many subjects though Latin and English were his favorites.  Dan had a brilliant and beautiful mind that has made a lasting impression on all of us who were blessed to be in his life.
Danny began working while still in high school, gratefully starting his first job at Audets Religious Gifts.  Through college, he worked at restaurants in NYC and Cape Cod where he furthered his natural abilities to prepare a delicious meal and host a gathering not soon-to-be forgotten.  Following college, Danny worked alongside his best friend and sister, Sheryl, to build a painting and wallpapering business that thrived for many years. Together they brightened homes, restaurants, and hotels in the area with their creative talents.
Danny’s most impactful career years, however, were those spent working with people in need.  He had a gift for listening without judgment and providing a compassionate response that was filled with quiet wisdom.  He used this gift throughout his career as a Direct Care Specialist; first at General Hospital/UHS for 20 years and then at Broome Developmental Center for 10 years. It was always Danny's hope to help people and he certainly did that and more.
Over the years of schooling and working, the friendships that Dan made at each of these places were the highlights of his journey. Danny was a friend to everyone and a friend for life.  He could light up a room with his warm and loving smile alone; add in a conversation with him (filled with his “Dan-isms” ), music and a dance move here and there - you’d forget about your troubles for sure.  He shared his love of fun, friendship, and life with his friends & family everywhere he went.  Danny's favorite place to spend time with friends was Oquaga Lake.  He treasured his time at the lake where he could always share a laugh with you, set out on a boat ride, enjoy a cocktail with you, and dance the night away at the cottage.
When Dan wasn't singing and dancing with friends, you could often find him at the piano with Mom putting on a sing-along show to behold. Danny loved his time spent with Mom, singing song after song as Mom beautifully played piano pieces of the season. We will cherish the memories of those heartfelt moments forever and alongside our Mom we will keep the music close.
Danny will be dearly missed by many friends and relatives across the country.  He will be remembered for the kindness he shared, the love that he gave, and all the generosity that his big Irish heart had to offer.  The family would like to thank the compassionate and dedicated team at Binghamton General Hospital's ICU for their support and care for Dan over the past several weeks.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 3 from 11 am - 1 pm at St. Patrick's Church, corner of Oak and Leroy Streets, Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 1 pm. Please visit ParsonFuneral.Com to offer your condolences.

Saul Levin - July 13, 1921 - March 04, 2021

Departed: 03/04/2021 (Binghamton)
Obituary Preview: SAUL LEVIN (July 13, 1921-March 4, 2021)
Chandler, AZ, formerly of Vestal, NY.  Saul Levin passed away peacefully at home on March 4, of extreme old age.  His wife of 70 years, Ruth, was at his side.
Saul was born in Chicago, the son of Nathan S. Levin and Rose (Finkel) Levin.  From childhood, he showed a talent for learning languages, and developed interests in history, the natural world, birdwatching, and classical music that he maintained throughout his life.  He earned an A.B. degree in Greek, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Chicago in 1942.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, assigned to the Signal Corps because of his linguistic and typing ability.  During the war, he was deployed to Algeria and Italy, and he rose to the rank of T-4 (sergeant).  Upon his return to the States and honorable discharge, he was selected for membership in the prestigious Society of Fellows at Harvard from 1946 to 1949.  He then received the PhD from the University of Chicago in 1949.
After teaching at the University of Chicago and at Washington University in St. Louis, Saul joined the faculty at Binghamton University in 1961, where he made his career.  He taught courses in ancient languages, classical literature and culture, linguistics, and the Bible, and he devotedly mentored students who shared his passions.  He took several turns as chair of the Classics Department, and he was a founder of the Center for Medieval and Early Renaissance Studies.  Saul rose to the highest academic rank, that of Distinguished Professor, in 1990.  His numerous publications spanned an exceptionally wide range of topics in classics, medieval and Renaissance studies, Biblical studies, and historical linguistics.  He published books on the Linear B tablets from Crete; on the ancient connections between the Indo-European and Semitic language groups, and on the original meanings of Biblical texts.  He also served as Co-Editor of the academic journal General Linguistics for many years.  After retiring in 2000 at the age of 78, he continued with scholarly research, publishing two books and many articles.  His scholarly publications will continue to inform and inspire generations to come.
Saul married Ruth Harris on March 17, 1951.  Together they raised six children at their home on Harvard St. in Vestal, where they lived for decades.  Both Saul and Ruth were strong proponents of education at all levels, a value they imparted to their children.  They promoted education in the community also.  Together, they established a grant fund for students of the Classics Department at Binghamton University to study ancient languages and enrich their understanding of the classical world.  They engaged deeply with the Jewish community as members of Temple Israel, where they attended Sabbath and holiday services regularly.  In 2006, they relocated to Chandler, AZ, to live close to family.
Saul is survived by his wife Ruth; sons and daughters Nathaniel (Lea) of Rye, NY; Eve of Lawrence, KS; Margaret Phillips of Norman, OK; Anne Hoffmann (Christopher) of Amherst, MA, Daniel (Pamela) of Claymont, DE; and Victoria (Erich Drinkwater) of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren Rose Phillips (Caleb Bissell) of Waterloo, IA; Gabrielle Levin of Brooklyn, NY; Sarah Hoffmann of Amherst, MA; Jonathan Phillips of Kansas City, MO; William Hoffmann of Alhambra, CA; and Samuel Levin of Claymont, DE; and step-grandson Britton Perry of Norman, OK.
