Obituary Preview: Deborah E. McIntyre, 70, of Grundy Center, IA, unexpectedly passed away late April 17, 2022, from an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Debbie was born February 20, 1952, to Wayne and Doris Shaffer in Grinnell, IA. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1970, and later went on to cosmetology college.
In 1969, she met Jerry McIntyre at a teen dance in Dysart. They married in 1971. They had three wonderful children, Melanie, Melissa, and Cory.
Debbie spent her time sewing, gardening, following her husband to music festivals, attending her grandchildren’s events, and spending as much time as possible with her beloved family.
Debbie is predeceased by her father, Wayne. She is survived by her mother Doris, her husband Jerry, her three children Melanie Greenlee, Melissa (Wade) Miller, and Cory McIntyre, and her six grandchildren, Robert, Jerran, Audrey, Logan, Breena, and Geneva.

Obituary Preview: Sharon Kay Abbas, 84, of Grundy Center, formerly of Dike and Cedar Falls, Iowa; passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Arlington Place in Grundy Center, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until time of memorial service 11:00 a.m. at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck, Iowa. Inurnment will be held privately by the family at later date at New Hampton City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Sharon was born on September 18, 1937, to her parents Kenneth and Cleo (Stock) Poling. She was raised in State Center and attended State Center High School. She was married to Dale Abbas and the couple welcomed five children into their family. They later divorced. Sharon worked at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa for many years as a pump assembler and retired in 2000.
Sharon attended the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck and enjoyed being apart of the Prayer Shawl Group, where she knitted hats. She was a highly creative person and loved sharing her talent. Whether it was woodworking, painting or any other crafts, Sharon was always busy creating. She also loved doing puzzles gardening and fishing, however her true joy in life came from spending time with her family and friends.
Sharon is survived by her daughters Diana Kruger (Rick Reinicke), Lucinda “Cindy” (Jay) Huberg, Shawna (Bob) Jones, and Dalette (Steve) Habenicht; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; brothers Allyn Poling and Kenneth “Butch” (Penny) Poling, Jr.; sisters Carol (Dennis) Volker and LeaAnn Hitchings; sisters-in-law Lois Poling, Norma Jean (Virgil) Meyer, Vickie Stancati, and Dixie Abbas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Dale Wayne Abbas in infancy; son-in-law Delroy Kruger; brothers Larry, Jerry, and Rick Poling; and sisters-in-law Jeanette Poling and Patty Pipho.

Tim was born on April 27, 1958, to his parents Donald and Janet (Jeffries) Bonk. He was raised in Holland and Grundy Center and attended Grundy Center High School. After high school, Tim enlisted in the United States Army and upon serving his country and receiving an honorable discharge, he moved to Beaufort, South Carolina for many years. There he was employed at a water reclamation plant and as an electrician. Tim loved to cook, and he was very good at it. He also enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was fishing, boating, or camping, Tim loved to be outdoors enjoying nature. However, his true joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his kids and grandkids.
Tim is survived by his children Debbie (Jason) Redix, Chris (Christina) Bonk, Theresa Hendryx, Timothy “Brian” Bonk and Brandy (Kenneth) Williams; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister Kathy Griffen; brother Matthew Bonk; sister-in-law Valerie Bonk and many extended family members. Gene was born on December 22, 1939, in Bloomington, Wisconsin to his parents George and Emma (Burr) Colson. He was raised in Fennimore, Wisconsin and graduated from Fennimore High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. After serving his country and being honorably discharged, Gene was united in marriage to Marcia Kay Foster. Together they welcomed four children into their family. In 1981 the family relocated to Grundy Center where Gene was employed at Bacon Veneer until his retirement.
Gene was an active member of the Grundy Center Lions Club, the Center Theatre, and the Senior Center. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved to take walks on the Pioneer Trial. However, Gene’s true joy in life came from spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his children Richard Colson of Grundy Center, Ron Colson (Julie Mitchell) of Cedar Falls, Tammy (Lee) Koch of Grundy Center, Terri (Ryan) Gordon of Reinbeck; 16 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marcia; and 2 brothers.

John was born on July 20, 1938, in Lincoln, Nebraska to his parents John Allen Huck Sr., and Ruth (Scharton) Huck. He was raised in Lincoln and attended high school there until he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. He served his country for 3 years and upon his honorable discharge he moved to Waterloo, Iowa and began working for his best friend at Waterloo Paint and Body. John then had several jobs around the Waterloo area working as a tradesman. On January 20, 1962, John was united in marriage to Mardell Finke in Waterloo. They welcomed two children into their family. When John was not working or spending time with his family, he enjoyed going to car shows and loved classic cars.
John is survived by his son Jonn “Budd” (Tami) Huck, Sr. of Brunswick, GA; daughter Jill Peterson of Waterloo, IA; grandchildren Jonn Brian Huck, Jr., Devin Singleton, Kali (Payton) Mobayyeni, Brandon (Amanda) Peterson, and Breanna (Christian) Gaffy; great-grandchildren Kaegen Singleton, Jordan Gaffy, Connor Peterson, Finnegan Gaffy, Charlotte Gaffy, Cassidy Peterson and Dryden Gaffy; brother Dale Huck; sisters Nancy Huck and Barb Blackstock; and many nieces and nephews. Ruth E. Ware - January 01, 1932 - March 22, 2022

Obituary Preview: Ruth Ellen Ware, 90, recently of Clive and a long-time resident of Grundy Center, died March 22, 2022 at the UnityPoint Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. She was born on a farm near Fern in Grundy County, Iowa on January 1, 1932, the adored third child of J. Frederick and Lena (Smit) Abels.
After her father died when Ruth was three years old, her family moved to Grundy Center. A child of the Great Depression, she knew frugality. As a teenager she earned her own spending money after school, on weekends and during the summer at Manly Drug Store. After high school graduation in 1950, she worked as a bookkeeper and teller at Farmers Savings Bank in Grundy Center.
On July 1, 1952, she married Charles Lincoln Ware in the F.E. Warren Air Force Base chapel in Cheyenne, Wyoming. While in Cheyenne, she kept books for Stockgrowers National Bank until the birth of her first child. In 1954, the young family returned to Iowa, building their life on a new farmstead south of Grundy Center where they lived for 65 years.
In addition to raising four children, keeping a productive garden where nothing went to waste, and sharing in the farm operation, she loved to read and worked at the Grundy Center Community Library and the Beaman public library. For three decades she kept alumni addresses for the Grundy Center Community School District Foundation.
A cancer survivor several times over, she chaired the Grundy County chapter of the American Cancer Society. She also served in different capacities for churches where she was a member, as Sunday School and catechism teacher, elder, treasurer and women’s group leader. She enjoyed worshipping her Lord at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, Alice Church of God in Conrad, and Salem Church of Lincoln.
Ruth and Charles enjoyed traveling and being outdoors, whether it was as Winter Texans in Alamo, Texas or camping with family in the Rockies, Ozarks, Pike’s Peak State Park, and other picturesque parts of northeast Iowa. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by driving to Alaska. Ruth was an accomplished but humble cook, stitched most of the clothes her daughters wore until they made their own, and created patchwork quilts for numerous family members.
She is preceded in death by brother Virgil Abels and sister Doris (Abels) Beuttler.
Survivors include husband Charles Ware of Clive; four children Laura (Dave) Miller of Ames, Nancy (Joe) Wauters of Windsor Heights, Dr. Lowell (Nancy) Ware of Smiths Grove, Kentucky, and Eric (Amanda) Ware of Windsor Heights; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 2 at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, followed by a meal at the church. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Friday, April 1 at Abels Funeral and Cremation Service Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center.

Obituary Preview: Shyrell Lynn Eccles, 72, of Ackley, IA, passed away on March 22, 2022, in Des Moines at Mercy One Hospital. There will not be a visitation as it was Shyrell's wishes to be cremated with her remains to be buried at a later date. The family will be planning a Memorial Service to be held later in May or early June where everyone will be able to come & say their goodbyes & pay their respects. Shyrell was born on July 17th, 1949, in Hampton, IA, to her parents Roy & Dorthy (Glaze)Kreimeyer. She was raised in Ackley & graduated from Ackley High School in 1967. She had also taken some secretary courses at Elsworth College in Iowa Falls.
Shyrell worked at Norwesco/Plastronics/NCM for nearly 40 years before the company closed down. She also had 3 daughters from her first marriage & another daughter from her second marriage before meeting her husband Robert Eccles. Her & Robert were married on June 16, 2002 & they first resided together in Holland, IA where Shyrell enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, being a huge help to her church, community & everyone she met. Her & her husband also really enjoyed playing cards with friends & family whenever possible.
Shyrell's faith in God was infectious & her love for the Lord was always radiating off of her no matter how she was feeling or what was going on in her life. Shyrell was a light to all who knew & loved her. She truly never met a stranger without quickly knowing them by name & calling them her friend. Shyrell was the most outgoing, loving, caring, helpful peaceful person you'd ever meet. She loved to meet & socialize, enjoying the company of everyone around her, no matter if you were family or a friend.
Shyrell & Bob were members of Pleasant Valley Church (Fern) & she was in a group called the "Bible Babes". One of her biggest passions in life, besides collecting so many different things like angels & crosses, was her love for the Lord. She prayed for everyone, no matter how big or small your need for prayers. Her heart had no bounds when it came to her love for everyone. Especially for her husband, children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. She would push everything aside to always be there for every one of her daughters & their families.
Shyrell is survived by her husband Robert Eccles of Ackley, IA, her 4 daughters Faith White of Grundy Center, IA, Jerilyn (Garnet) Olsowski-Livingstone of PEI, Canada, Dorthy (Jeff) McGrane of Wellsburg, IA & Brittany (Theodore) Burt of Holland, IA, her brother Dick (Wilma) Boger of Aplington, IA. She's also survived by 16 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren of whom she loved & adored.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy & Dorthy (Glaze) Kreimeyer, her stepmother Hazel (Boger) Kreimeyer, her brothers Rod (Jean) Kreimeyer, Don (Dee) Boger & Myron (Georgia) Boger, a child lost during pregnancy, her first husband Richard Olsowski & her second husband Roger Henricks.

Pauline was born on July 9, 1933, in rural Grundy County, Iowa to her parents Sicko and Ella (Hippen) Luchtenburg. She was raised in Grundy County and graduated from Grundy Center High School. Later in life she went to Hawkeye Community College and earned her Nursing Assistant Degree.
Pauline was united in marriage to the love of her life Virgil Lee Arends on October 30, 1951, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. They made their home on their farm in rural Parkersburg for 50 years and welcomed five children into their family. They later moved to Grundy Center.
Pauline began work at the Farm Bureau as a secretary. She then worked at Grundy County Memorial Hospital as a Nursing Assistant on the OB floor. Later in life, after receiving her certification from Hawkeye Community College, she worked at the Long-Term Care Unit of the hospital. Lee and Pauline were also the owners of the Fern Dairy and Cheese Store. She then worked as a salesperson for Gourmet Express. She was a proud mother and helped Lee on their farm.
Pauline was a long-time member of Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, where she served the church as a Church Youth Group Leader, taught Catechism classes and was a part of the ladies serving group. She loved fishing at Judd’s Resort, sewing, gardening, and playing cards. However, her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Pauline is survived by her children Patti (Mike) Norris of Grundy Center, IA, Sheryl (Leon) Johnson of Parkersburg, IA, Joel (Jeanne) Arends of Clear Lake, IA, Jane (Brian) Schissel of Olathe, KS and Cinda Pankratz (Jason Winters) of Clear Lake, IA; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil; grandson Cory Norris; sister Lillian Flater; brothers Frank and Don Luchtenburg; and son-in-law Tom Morris.

Ted was born on December 4, 1934, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to his parents Delbert and Vivian (Boren) Clark. He was raised in Grundy Center and graduated from Grundy Center High School in the class of 1953. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served 4 years. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Iowa and was united in marriage to Lois Smith on September 14, 1958. Together they made their home in Cedar Falls and welcomed 2 daughters into their family.
Ted worked as a printer at John Deere from 1964 until his retirement in 1993. All the while though, he ran his own printing company from his basement beginning in 1974; and continuing through 1981 when he bought the Clark Printing Shop until he sold the shop in 2014. During that time, he also worked construction in his afterhours, doing concrete and landscaping work.
Ted loved to fish, play cards, and travel to Florida to visit family. He was a member of a bowling team and even sponsored the team for league play.
Ted is survived by his daughters Kim Bruhn of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Kristi (Bob) Erck of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren Matthew, Conrad, and Riley; 4 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews; loving companion Jean Taylor; and extended family Lorry (Ward) Richards and Jeanne Taylor.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois Clark; brothers Bob Clark, Bill Clark; and nephews Tim Clark and Jeff Smith.

Don was born on January 20, 1942, in Iowa City, Iowa to his parents Erwin and Kathryn (Groenewald) Ash. He was employed by Viking Pumps from July 12, 1965, until his retirement on February 1, 2004. He loved hunting, fishing, his collection John Deere tractors and mini banks, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed his morning coffee at Scotty’s with friends and playing cards. Don also enjoyed chopping his own wood for his wood burning stove, He was a stubborn and quiet man but with a soft heart especially for his family and his beloved dogs. Don is survived by his daughter Patricia (Ronald) Rose of Maxwell, Iowa; sons Donavan C. Ash, Jr. of Ackley, Iowa, and Robert Ash of Grundy Center, Iowa; granddaughters Vanessa, Elizabeth, and Mary; grandsons Ryan and Joshua; and great-grandson Avery; sisters Barbara Becker of Grundy Center, Iowa and Carol Hogan (Earl Varnadore) Eufaula, Alabama; brothers Kay (Pauline) Ash of Parkersburg, Iowa and Kevin (Mona) Ash of Grundy Center, Iowa; and sisters-in-law Liz Ash and Roxane Ash,

Kenneth "Ken" Earl Showers - March 21, 1938 - February 08, 2022

Kenneth Earl Showers was born on March 21st, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa.  He was raised by his mother, Alice Iola Crow.  He was raised and educated in the Waterloo school district, where he attended and graduated from Waterloo East High School.  Following graduation, Ken went on to UCLA and studied engineering.  After his studies he eventually returned to his home community to work as a plumber for a few different local companies in the Waterloo area.  On July 22, 2000, Ken was united in marriage to Carol L. Christensen in Waterloo, Iowa.   Ken loved collecting classic cars, riding motorcycles, and working on his vehicles.  He loved to tell stories about his various adventures with the classic cars and motorcycles.  Ken and his wife, Carol Showers- Christensen loved to go out to dinner and dancing in their younger years.  As they aged, he cared for her until was physically unable.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carol L. Showers-Christensen of North Liberty, IA ; his 5th wife Joyce Sue Potter of Waterloo, IA; sister Nancy L. (Orville) McRobie; daughters Anna Marie Beeh and Tamara Tomkins; 5 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Steven (DeAnn) McRobie, Pamela (John) Holscher, Michael (Becky) McRobie, Kathleen (Duane) Bishop, Ronald (Jodie) Watson, Debra Watson (Dana) Grannos, Francine Watson; and brother-in-law Norman Watson. Mary Lou was born on January 9, 1938, in Lanesboro, Minnesota, the daughter of Melvin and Nora (Torkelson) Gillund. She was always a hard worker and spent almost 40 years at NCM, where she gained many friendships. Mary Lou enjoyed gardening, baking, and spending time with family and friends.
Mary Lou is survived by children Steve Peterson of Reinbeck, Bob (Judy) Peterson of Beaman, Jim (Donna) Peterson of Gladbrook, Shelly (Randy) Johnson of Grundy Center, and Cindy (Jeff) Curren of Holland; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and brother Duane Gillund of Harmony, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Donald Gillund.

Obituary Preview: Donna Ralston, age 89, of Grundy Center, IA peacefully passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022, at Arlington Place in Grundy Center.
She was born to parents Tieman “Tim” and Lisetta “Dot” Graves Dudden on May 16, 1932, in Grundy Center and graduated from Grundy Center Community High School in 1950. Donna and Leonard Ralston were married on September 9, 1951; they lived in Grundy Center except while Leonard was stationed in Cheyenne, WY serving in the U.S. Air Force in 1952-1955.
Donna’s employment history included the Grundy Café, Soil Conservation Office, Spokesman Press, Collectors News and Dudden’s Men’s/Boys Clothing Store.  Leonard and Donna retired in 1991.  She later worked at the Abels Engelkes Funeral Home, and enjoyed numerous church activities, volunteering at the Grundy Center County Hospital, and reading.
Donna was a lifelong member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church and a member of Mariners and Woman’s Club of Grundy Center.  While her first love was her husband and family, she thoroughly enjoyed music- playing the piano, singing in the church choir, and frequently singing for weddings and funerals.  She and Leonard also belonged to the Town and County Golf Course.
Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, parents: Tieman and Lisetta Dudden; one son, Timothy, brother, and sister-in-law Roland and LaVine Dudden, nephew Jeffrey Dudden, Parents-in-law Elon and Alberta Ralston, sisters-in-law Darleen Haren and Susan Cosford. Brothers-in-law Kay Reynolds, Richard Shaw, Barry Cosford, Robert Berger, and Carroll Haren.
She is survived by her children: Debra Ralston of Elkhorn, NE, David (Janet) Ralston of Scottsdale, AZ, Patricia Ralston of Perrysburg, OH and daughter-in-law, Coleen Ralston of Grundy Center, IA; grandchildren: T.J. (Lacy) Ralston of Jefferson City, MO, Nick Dean of Las Vegas, NV, Eric (Heather) Ralston of Owasso, OK, Emily Dean of Omaha, NE and Emmy Ralston of Tulsa, OK; great-grandchildren: Brenden, Brock and Landon Ralston and Garrett, Makenzie, and Beau Ralston; brother-in-law: Marvin (Rosie) Ralston and sisters-in-law Margie Reynolds and Cheryl Berger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harriet Ann Vander Holt was born on April 6, 1938, in Buckgrove, Iowa the daughter of Harm and Fannie (Engelkes) Vander Holt.  She attended school up until the 8th grade before beginning her working life.  Harriet was a woman who had a heart of Gold and work ethic that shined just as bright.  She was a woman who absolutely loved serving others. Harriet worked many years as a waitress and was remembered for always serving her customers with a beautiful smile.  She also dedicated many years to babysitting and loved every minute spent with all those kids she watched.
Harriet had a passion for bowling, racing (multiple trophies for demos), attending Country concerts, watching, and attending sporting events, traveling (especially Las Vegas) and anything that had to do with spending time with her grandkids.  The main passion she held onto was her love for her family and the memories that she was blessed to be a part of.  She was a beautiful woman and will be deeply missed.

Obituary Preview: Paul Arthur Rouse passed away at home on December 22, 2021, after 13 years with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell Lymphoma. He was 82 years old. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. Inurnment will be held privately by the family at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the church, hospital or school in loving memory of Paul.
Paul was born on October 4, 1939, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the second of two sons of Floyd and Ireine Bockes Rouse who lived at 813 G. Avenue in Grundy Center.
Paul was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1957. After graduation he worked with his dad and brother at Rouse Motor Chrysler Plymouth.
In January of 1963, Paul was drafted into the army. After his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri he was assigned to Fort Gordon, Georgia where he learned Morris Code, Teletyping and Voice and Encryption. Later he was assigned to Ft. Hood, Texas where he was a driver for the 141st Signal Battalion Commander.
Paul served in the army from January of 1963 to January of 1965. After his discharge he returned to Rouse Motor and worked there until his retirement on December 31, 2002.
On August 14, 1965, Paul married Joan Weltha, an elementary school teacher in Grundy Center. They have two children. Their son, Lee (Jody) and two sons, Dalton and Wyatt, live in Des Moines. Their daughter, Dr. Ann Lebo, (Andy) and three children, Ella, Lucy and Pete live in Grundy Center.
Paul was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center and a past Trustee and Elder. He was a witty and fun person who always made great decisions. He enjoyed his family, golfing, family vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks and trips to Branson, Missouri. He will be dearly missed.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, two children and five grandchildren, his brother, Don (Kayleen) and their son, Marty (Marci) of Grundy Center. Paul was preceded in death by his dad in 1992; his mother in 2001; and his niece, Beth in 2001.

Lavonne Kathleen Cuffel was born on January 14, 1932 in Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Howard H. and Vera Mabel (Hanawalt) Cuffel. Bonnie’s family moved to Conrad, Iowa where she was raised and educated in the Conrad school district and graduated from Conrad with the class of 1950. Bonnie was united in marriage to Harlan Gene Rust on August 11, 1950 in Iowa Falls, Iowa. From this union the couple were blessed with two children: Darrell and Patricia.
Bonnie was a hard-working woman, dedicating 16 years at Ritchie Industries in Conrad, Iowa as well as operating a day care for many years and raising her own family. Bonnie was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.  In her younger years, she enjoyed spending time baking all sorts of goodies or in her garden. The last four years of her life, Bonnie lived at Arlington Place in Grundy Center, and she loved all the different card games and board games they played together. However, Bonnie was a little bit competitive when it came to her games and didn’t lose often. As much as she loved the time spent baking as a young woman or playing cards in her elder years, the number one thing that Bonnie cherished the most was her love for her Savior Jesus Christ and the time spent making memories with her family and friends..
