Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also provide a sense of closure for loved ones and help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published on. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary websites and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes! Many online obituary websites allow you to create and publish an obituary without printing it in a physical newspaper. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or website. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals. Online obituary websites may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It depends on the publication or website. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not permit changes once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting!

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the website or platform. Some online obituaries remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived or removed after a certain period of time.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

This is up to personal preference. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer not to. Consider what would be most comforting and respectful to your loved one and their memory.

Can I write a humorous or lighthearted obituary?

Yes! While an obituary should still be respectful, there's no reason it can't also reflect the person's personality and sense of humor.

How do I notify people about an upcoming funeral or memorial service?

In addition to including this information in the obituary, consider sending out personal notifications via email, social media, or phone calls to ensure that everyone who needs to know is informed.

Can I create a memorial webpage or Facebook page instead of an obituary?

Absolutely! These types of online tributes can be a wonderful way to share memories and condolences with others.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes! This can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy and support a cause they cared about.

How do I handle corrections or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or website directly to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the issue as soon as possible.

Can I republish an old obituary on its anniversary or special occasion?

This is a lovely way to continue honoring your loved one's memory. Check with the original publication or website for their policies on republication.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Sensitivity and compassion are key when writing an obituary for someone who has passed away under difficult circumstances. Focus on celebrating their life and legacy rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death.

Can I include information about pet companions in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many people consider their pets part of their family, so it's perfectly fine to mention them in the obituary if desired.

How do I ensure that my loved one's story is told accurately and respectfully in their obituary?

Take your time when writing the obituary, gather input from others who knew them well, and proofread carefully before submitting. Remember that this is a celebration of their life – focus on sharing their story with love and respect.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Drawing upon memories and stories about your loved one can be therapeutic during this difficult time. If needed, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I use social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter to share news about my loved one's passing?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for spreading news quickly and connecting with others who want to pay their respects.

How do I balance sharing news about my loved one's passing with respecting their privacy?

This can be a delicate balance. Consider sharing only what feels comfortable and appropriate for your loved one's memory and your own emotional well-being.
