Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and the community of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide information about their life, including their accomplishments, interests, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share funeral or memorial service details, allowing others to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary, especially if the family is overwhelmed with grief or lacks the time to write it themselves.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words, but some publications may allow longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging. Be sure to check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines on photo submission.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or additional features like photos or videos.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is typically shorter and more concise than an obituary. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life, while a death notice focuses on announcing their passing and providing basic funeral details.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there's sensitive information about your loved one that you'd rather not share publicly (e.g., cause of death), it's best to omit it from the obituary or phrase it discreetly. Remember that an obituary is meant to honor the person's memory, not sensationalize their passing.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to charity instead of flowers at funeral services. Including this information in the obituary helps spread the word and supports a meaningful cause.

How do I notify social media platforms about someone's passing?

Social media platforms have varying policies for handling deceased users' accounts. You may need to provide proof of death and follow specific procedures for memorializing or removing accounts.

Are there any cultural differences in writing an obituary?

Can I write an obituary for someone who was cremated?

Absolutely! Cremation doesn't affect the need for an obituary. You can still share information about your loved one's life and legacy, even if they chose cremation over traditional burial.

How do I handle multiple marriages or relationships in an obituary?

This can be a sensitive topic! When dealing with multiple marriages or relationships, prioritize honesty and respect for all parties involved. Consider consulting with family members or friends for guidance on how best to approach this situation.
