John Thomas Mullowney - May 09, 1941 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: During a brutal NYC winter in the 1980s, John caught a miserable cold.  He knew the best prescription was Irish whiskey. After an evening of treatment, his symptoms did not abate so John decided he needed sunshine. The next morning, John, his fiancée and her 10 year old daughter found themselves on a plane bound for the US Virgin Islands. A week of sun resulted in a cure. Unfortunately sunshine and whiskey are not effective against dementia so John decided to join his father Jack, mother Eileen and brother Michael in the afterlife. He is survived by his daughter Ruth (Dean) who wishes to thank the staff at Mother Angeline and her Mount Carmel family. In memory of John, please raise a glass, turn your face towards the sun and do something spontaneous with those you love.

Mark Alan Picknell - November 08, 1957 - March 07, 2022

Departed: 03/07/2022 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: It is with tremendous love, respect, and sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband,  father, and grandfather on March 7th, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mark was born on November 8, 1957, to George and Marilyn Picknell. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio where he spent much of his childhood and adolescence developing a passion for sports, music, and the arts. During Mark’s teen years, while attending Whitmer High School, and playing basketball for Monroe Methodist Church, Mark would be seen wearing his favorite lucky number 13, on his jersey. To his closest friends and teammates, Mark was given the nickname of “Pick” (sp. Pic). This nickname became his trademark and the trademark nickname for his sister and brothers, in the years that followed. During Mark’s college years, his enjoyment of competition and sports led he and many of his friends to the competitive adult softball leagues, of NW Ohio. After most softball games, Mark, and his teammates (friends) could be seen celebrating and unwinding at one of Toledo’s favorite past-time gathering places, Tom Clark’s Player’s Club.
After graduating from The University of Toledo, in 1979, Mark began a career in sales, with 3M. He soon transitioned from 3M to a career in Pharmaceutical Sales, with Mead Johnson (Bristol Myers Squibb). Mark’s new career led to family relocations to Mansfield, Ohio, Newburg, Indiana, and finally to Columbus, Ohio. As Mark progressed in his career, he achieved much success and earned numerous national and annual awards for his many contributions to the company. While Mark’s career kept him busy, it was an important priority for him as a father, to be involved with his children and family. Throughout the years, Mark was a parent volunteer for his daughter’s swim team, a coach for his son’s youth baseball, basketball, and soccer teams, and a volunteer at his family’s church festivals.
In addition to his successful sales career, Mark enjoyed reading and learning about personal finance and investments. He made a commitment and spent countless hours reading and learning about the stock and bond markets, and alternative investments. This became another interest and hobby that would guide Mark’s investment choices to further provide for his family, and a secure retirement.
While Mark’s favorite musicians were the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, over the years his musical tastes expanded, and his collection of vinyl LPs became quite extensive. Mark’s continued appreciation for music led to his added fulfillment of reading and writing poetry. In most recent years, Mark learned to play bass guitar. These artistic interests led Mark to write lyrics to numerous songs. With the help and collaboration of other musicians, the band “Exit Popes” was formed. Mark’s poetry and lyrics were soon put to music and the recording of several original songs.
Throughout his life, Mark enjoyed traveling. One of his favorite family destinations for vacation was the beaches at Virginia Beach and the Outerbanks.  Mark loved to travel with Lou especially to Europe and really loved Amsterdam.
For those that met and knew Mark, you saw his gift for making friends very easily. He was socially blessed and was someone that people always gravitated to. He was a fun, sensitive and caring individual, which could always be seen in his love and compassion for family and friends. Mark truly loved his family. He worked hard to provide and create a loving home.
Mark is preceded in death by his father George Picknell and his stepdaughter Natalie Ebner. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Lou, his daughters Amy Malone (Matt), Jennifer Harper (Steven), his son Matthew, stepson Christopher, and his granddaughter Pureza. Mark is also survived by his mother Marilyn Picknell, his sister Beth Berger (Pete), his brothers Brian (Julie), and Chris (Traci), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins,, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and loving friends.

Ana Adela Villarroel - December 31, 1938 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Ana Adela Villarroel, age 83, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2022, at McNaughten Pointe Nursing Center.  She was born on December 31, 1938, in Minas, Cuba, where she grew up.  Ana came to the U.S. in 1969, and proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1998.  Her Catholic faith was her compass, and guided her daily as she made the world a better place with each small act of kindness. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church for many years.   From the time Ana was 17 years old, she made it her life’s work to care for her mother.   She dedicated every moment to ensuring her mother had the best care, focusing on simple things like quietly singing to her while bathing her or making sure her hair always looked nice. They had a huge window in their living room and Ana had her mother’s bed positioned so she could see outside. Every spring and summer Ana would work tirelessly to fill a huge flower bed with every colorful flower you could imagine. She knew her mother enjoyed looking at them. She would play her mother’s favorite musicals and Cuban soap operas on the VCR. Birthdays were elaborate and she would dress her mother up and always had the fanciest cake.  If you knew Ana, there were some things that would make you smile, and some would cause you to just shake your head. She was always catching a bus somewhere in the city, whether it was church, school, the grocery store, or a doctor’s appointment. Ana did get her driver’s license but never really embraced driving the old Chevy Nova she bought. She was about 4’11” and that car just swallowed her up. Ana loved to gift people a box of cherry cordials and she always had many boxes on hand for such an occasion.  After her mother died, Ana attended Capitol University, graduating in 2002 with her bachelor’s degree in social work.  Ana went on to earn her master’s degree in social work from The Ohio State University in 2004. She visited and advocated for the elderly, and gave them a voice.  She volunteered in many capacities around the city.  Anyone who knew Ana knew she was strong-willed and if she did not like something, she shared her opinion with you.  She was passionate and cared about people, and shared her beautiful soul with anyone she met.  Ana was preceded in death by her parents, Ana Maria Villarroel and José Villarroel. She is survived by her brother, José Villarroel, Jr., and a sister, Martha Jordan, who both reside in Florida.  Ana was blessed with many good friends in her life: including Andrea, Sue, Toni, Bob & Martha, Ted & Dottie, Bill & Anne, Mark & Julie, Russ & Paula.  Friends may call from Thursday 6-7 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 4383 E. Broad St. where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 7 p.m.  Private entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

He created a satirical comedy group in the late 70’s called “The Radish Guild.” They performed small venues around town sporadically, enjoying themselves immensely. Frank also wrote short stories and plays. All this writing led to Frank’s great passion. In 1983, Nancy Gilson hired him to be an arts critic for the Columbus Citizen-Journal. He got to write about music, theater, arts, and movies. He worked there until the C-J went out of business in 1985. In 1986, wonderful Nancy Gilson hired Frank to be an entertainment reporter at the Columbus Dispatch. In 1987, she named him the paper’s movie critic. Frank was the movie critic for 22 years. He was in his element. He loved discussing and writing about movies. His personal hero was Groucho Marx because they shared the same sense of humor. His favorite movie was Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot. He said “Everyone should see it!” Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 24 from 4-7pm at EGAN-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 403 E.
