Harriet P. Goldberg - Unknown - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Needham)
Obituary Preview: At 90 years of age, Harriet Goldberg remained healthy, vibrant and astute until her peaceful passing on April 6, 2022. She enjoyed splendid times with her family and friends, including a wonderful outing and rich conversations in the days prior to her passing.
Harriet was the beloved and revered wife of Morton Goldberg and Jack Solovei, who predeceased her. She was a loving mother to her son Philip Goldberg and his spouse Vivian Hsu of Needham, Massachusetts, her daughter Renee Carpenter of Plainfield, Vermont, and her stepdaughters Stephanie Solovei of Miami, Florida and Karen Solovei of West Barnstable, Massachusetts. Known with great affection as “Gran” and “GG”, Harriet also is survived by her grandchildren Jennifer, Katherine, Elisabeth, William and Laura, and their families including seven great-grandchildren, Sage, Tristan, Astrid, River, Jade, Sophia and Skyler. She also leaves many nieces and nephews around the country, as well as very dear lifetime friends in Greater Boston and Southern Florida.
Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Harriet returned to Boston after graduating from Mary Washington College at the University of Virginia, and raised her family in Newton, Massachusetts. An avid reader and learner, education was of paramount importance to her, and she always was with a good book, newspaper, magazine or documentary film. Harriet loved the Boston Red Sox, movies and animals. She would laugh readily at canine antics, frequently spoiling family dogs with forbidden treats and forgiving their clever mischievous behavior.
Harriet moved to Needham in 2014 and continued to live independently, with an active circle of friends and enthusiastic games of bridge and mah-jongg. Her love of family and friends extended to generations of sun-filled days in Hull’s Waveland neighborhood on Nantasket Beach. She created lasting fun memories over years of summer seasons, initially with her parents and sisters and then her large extended family. She relished a local lobster roll, a sweet bakery confection and leisurely gatherings over a porch dinner off the grill, occasionally followed by an evening stroll on the moonlit beach.
We will remember Harriet for her perceptive mind, dry wit and ready smile. Her family requests that you celebrate her life with the laughter and love of a treasured memory or several - perhaps with a lobster roll, ice cream cone or cookie in your hands on the next sunny warm day. All services will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/, the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute https://www.jimmyfund.org/,or a charitable organization of your choice.

Kathleen N. Milligan - Unknown - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Needham)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen N. Milligan, of Hope RI, formerly of Needham, April 1, 2022. Mother of Rosemarie Milligan of Needham. Daughter of John F. and the late Barbara N. (Shellenbach) Milligan of Needham.  Grandmother of Nathaniel Milligan. Sister of Dee Guiney, Michelle Milligan, Paul Milligan and his wife Nancy, Maureen Roianov, Victor Milligan and his wife Lisa, Billie Jean Milligan and the late Eddie Milligan and Mark Milligan.
Our Dearest Kathleen: Mother. Grandmother. Sister. Daughter. Friend. We write you this letter because we want to tell you how much we love you. How much we miss you. How much we have learned from you. And how you have made our lives better, richer, more extraordinary. You gave us your heart; your kindness; your endless generosity…and your biting sarcasm.
You were a devoted mother and grandmother. You gave everything to make sure all was ok. A fierce love. Camping at Nickerson, hotly contested games of scrabble, and sea turtles. Oh, the sea turtles: on blankets and on drawings from Nathaniel.
You were our sounding board to help us figure out what was the right thing to do. You had unwavering and faithful devotion to our parents in their later years when they needed you most. There were great times and great songs like Jeff Beck’s Cause We Ended as Lovers and the entire and replayed and replayed Man of La Mancha. We will smile each time we hear them; we think you will smile too. You wanted iced coffee from Dunkies when you were discharged; we hope the iced coffee flows freely where you are now.
We are blessed beyond measure and will spend the rest of our days with you in our hearts. You inspired us with your loving heart. There is no person more kind, unselfish and compassionate.
You left us on April 1, 2022 and we grieve – oh we grieve.  In some ways you are gone; but in many ways you are here with us as we walk our own steps in our own journeys. We will be warmed by your memories. We will be wiser because of what you taught us. We will treasure moments because you will be in our thoughts. The angel in you becomes the better angel in us all. Love, Us A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Joseph Church, 1360 Highland Av, Needham, on Saturday, April 9th at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will follow at Needham Cemetery. For obituary, directions or to share a memory of Kathleen, please visit www.eatonfuneralhomes.com

Richard C. "Rick" Hardy - Unknown - March 08, 2022

Departed: 03/08/2022 (Needham)
Obituary Preview: Richard C. “Rick” Hardy “Power, Speed, Courage”
March 8, 2022, age 68, resident of Needham, son of the late William C. Hardy and the late Florence Hardy. Died suddenly in North Carolina while doing what he loved most.
Born in Boston, Rick grew up in West Roxbury, attending Boston English High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his Master’s degree from Northeastern University.
Rick was a passionate athlete, and competed as a part of the Cambridge Sports Union during the 1980s, running and orienteering. He transitioned into cycling, and he participated in many local groups, like the Boston Road Club, officiating and participating in the Wells Ave. Sunday Crit and competing in cyclocross races across New England.
In addition to his love for cycling, Rick was a history buff, and spent time on the Needham Historical Commission, advocating for the preservation of historic buildings. He was a longtime Trustee of the Needham Public Library, and believed in education for all. He volunteered and taught ESL classes for Needham community members, and was deeply committed to social justice values.
Rick’s spiritual exploration into Zen Buddhist practice brought him to the Worcester Boundless Way Temple (Mugendo-ji). He enjoyed reading koans and classical Chinese poetry, and his favorite text was Cold Mountain Poems by 8th century Chinese poet Han-shan. To the layperson, Buddhism and the Grateful Dead may seem a strange pair, but for Rick, Robert Hunter’s lyrics echoed the timelessness and transcendent joy of the Eightfold Path. He was a dead-head to the core, and his love of improvisational music extended to jazz as well.
Rick is predeceased by his brother, William Hardy, and is survived by spouse Deirdre O’Hare, child Lee Locke-Hardy, and daughter-in-law Corrie Locke-Hardy, along with sister-in-law Una Stephens-Hardy and step-sister Katherine Kilduff Dineen. He is also survived by his brothers in law Thomas P. O’Hare, his spouse Elaine and John P. O’Hare as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
