Anita Rene Brafford - March 16, 1955 - December 10, 2021

Departed: 12/10/2021 (Longview)
Obituary Preview: Anita Rene Brafford (also known as Granny, Oma or in her early days Tempered Steel) entered eternal life on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 3:16 PM. Rene’s miraculous life began on March 16, 1955, by her parents Martin and Nettie Demarest. Her spirit was carried on by her two daughters, Rachael Hamberg and Jessica Pennington, her grandchildren: Daniel Hamberg, Sebastian Hamberg, Deserae Hamberg, and Jayse Pennington, as well as an extended family of relations and friends from every walk of life.We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from her, throughout her 66 years of life. The 12 Golden Rules were her moral compass she stood by and would quote to all that would listen. Rene was strong, independent, fierce, and loyal. She taught us the value of hard work and the value of strong love. My sister and I knew that we didn’t have all of the things other kids had, but mom had a way of making us feel that we had more. We remember times we were without running water and she would take us to the creek to go swimming. She would bring shampoo and conditioner and tell us we were going to make bubbles! She encouraged us to be strong as well; there was nothing that we couldn’t imagine or achieve in her eyes. Mom believed in the balance of life and that there was a time and place for everything. My sister and I were the “Apple of her eye”, but even apples need polishing. Anytime we stepped out of line, mom would sit us down and explain why the things we did were wrong before she would pick a switch. She would always tell us, “This hurts me more than it will hurt you”. At the time, that was nonsense to our young ears, but now we know why; mom was teaching us to be ready for the world and all that comes with it.Our mother was quick to love societies’ “unlovable” and even quicker to forgive others’ transgressions towards her. Mom didn’t have much in the way of worldly possessions, but she would be the first to give the shirt off her back to the less fortunate, even if that meant a cold night ahead.Mom was known for her love of animals and plants. She knew both just needed a little love and compassion to prosper. It would come as no surprise to find her nursing a slew of wildlife back to health including squirrels, racoons, possums, and birds alike. One of her loves was a vulture named Enie, of course, short for Einstein. We remember when she first found the baby bird - she swore it was an eagle! Even after finding out it was a vulture, she didn’t care; it soared just like an eagle to her! Thus, was our mother’s view on life itself. So, in honor of our mother, “Don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill”, “Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house”, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” and “Treat others as you yourself would want to be treated”.A public memorial service will be held from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM Saturday, December 18th, 2021, at the Pennington Residence. Official announcement will be made via social media. If you need further details, please reach out to Jessica Pennington at (903) 806-4780 or Rachael Hamberg at (903) 975-2242.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and memorable. Be sure to check with the publication or platform for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars. Be sure to check with the publication or platform for their pricing structure.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can ensure that your life story is told in your own words and provide a sense of control over how you're remembered.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a summary of the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a great way to celebrate the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's not possible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to make edits or corrections after publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication and their deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch and help capture the essence of the deceased. Just be sure to keep them relevant and respectful.

What if I don't want an obituary published at all?

If you prefer not to have an obituary published, you can simply decline or opt-out when asked by the funeral home or family members. Keep in mind that this may limit the ability of friends and acquaintances to learn about the passing and pay their respects.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched digitally or in-person.

Can I republish an old obituary?

In most cases, yes! You can republish an old obituary on social media, a memorial website, or other online platforms. Just be sure to obtain permission from the original publisher if necessary.
