Allene Doree' Canaris - August 19, 1931 - December 28, 2021

Departed: 12/28/2021 (Eagle Lake)
Obituary Preview: Allene Canaris, 90, of Eagle Lake, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Rice Medical Center due to chronic health complications. Allene Doree’ Brandt was born in the home of her German parents, Philip and Gretchen Brandt, in Rosenberg, TX on August 19 , 1931, the second youngest of four children. As a teenager, she enjoyed riding around town with her friends and going to dances. It would be a dance where she had her first date with her future husband, Mike Canaris (both her heartthrob and headache). Allene and Mike married in July of 1951, only 3 months after their first date, and celebrated 49 years of marriage before Mike’s passing in June 2000. In 1952, they welcomed their only son, Phillip Dan (Danny), and 21 years later, a daughter (in-law) with Sue Mathis. Allene and Sue would develop a beautiful 52-year long friendship. In May of 1978, Sue and Danny welcomed their son, Blake Dan Canaris and 3 years later, their daughter, Rebal Doree’ Canaris. It was Allene’s adored grandchildren that would coin her iconic namesake, “Granny”. She was a phenomenal grandmother to her grandchildren and became a grandma figure to so many more, opening her home and sharing her amazing home-cooked meals with her extended family. Granny’s kitchen was her sanctuary. She loved to cook for family and friends, sometimes cooking for groups as large as 20 people…and with no complaints. No birthday would pass without one of Granny’s amazing dinners and delicious homemade cakes. Allene first worked as a nurse’s aid in Richmond and Wharton with her best friend Letty before starting a 50+ year career in the retail store business. She began working at Foster’s Superette convenience store in Eagle Lake in 1964, then went on to work at other various convenience stores in Eagle Lake owned by her son and daughter-in-law, which included the Cupboard, Dan’s Minute Stop, D&S and The Eagle Stop. Granny was most recognized at The Eagle Stop where she spent over 30 years making lifelong friendships with those who frequented the store. She drew people in with her legendary banana bread and continued to be an ever-present friendly face. She worked up until the age of 86, when the store closed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip Brandt and Gretchen Seydler; husband, Mike Canaris; sister, Helen Brandt; brothers, Phil and Leon Brandt. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Sue Canaris; grandchildren, Blake and wife Amanda Canaris, Rebal and husband Vadim Kishko; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Canaris and Simyon Kishko and her nephew, Michael John, one of her best friends. Granny was one of the most hard-working, giving and resilient people. Throughout decades of various medical issues, she never lost her sense of humor and tenacity. As we mourn the loss of our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, we are reminded of the brevity of life and the impact of true selflessness. Funeral services will be held for the family at Lakeside Cemetery with a celebration of life ceremony to follow at a later date. Pallbearers include Drayton Canaris, Michael Canaris, Michael Duarte, Sidney Lira, Tallon Canaris and Vadim Kishko. The family invites anyone whose life was touched by Granny to donate to the Rice Medical Center Employee Volunteers.

Robbie Austin Beene - May 15, 1925 - November 03, 2021

Departed: 11/03/2021 (Eagle Lake)
Obituary Preview: Robbie Lucille (Beals) Beene was born May 15, 1929 to Miles Monroe Beals and Ivey Gertrude (McNiel) Beals in East Bernard, Texas. She lived with her parents and younger brother Robert in Chesterville until she was 11 years old. They then moved to East Bernard after her father died and that is where she graduated high school in 1946. After graduation, Robbie became a nurse and received her LVN license by waiver during the tuberculosis outbreak, becoming one of the first LVNs in the state of Texas. Robbie married Henry Lorane Austin May 25, 1947 in Eagle Lake. They lived in Eagle Lake and raised 3 beautiful children together, H.L., Karla, and Tim. Many tall tales are told about that time. Rock soup was created by the riverbed, sawdust was on the kitchen floor for dancing, and Robbie loved every moment with her children. While she was working at the Eagle Lake hospital, her husband passed away in 1968. After his death, she married Henry Ball of Hillsboro, Texas in 1970. She moved to Hillsboro and continued to work as a private duty nurse. On July 31, 1997 Robbie finally retired as a nurse after working for 50 years caring for the most vulnerable within her community. Henry Ball died in 1997 and she then married Denver “Buddy” Beene in 1998. They moved to Seadrift, Texas and then later to El Campo, Texas.  Denver died in August 2008. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Eastern Star in Eagle Lake.
Robbie was a born during the depression which shaped her into a frugal, strong, and independent woman. Her Grandmother Lovie taught her to sew, and she made her first dress when she was only 4 years old. This skill led her to be an adept seamstress which helped supplement her nursing income by sewing for the community. She was a prominent fixture in her community, and she was even the nurse for the local girl scouts’ troop when her daughter Karla was a member.
She continued to work as a nurse in her community throughout her life. She was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother and always put others first. She was the first person many would call when needing advice on any survival skills in life because she always knew the right recipe. She enjoyed traveling, a good family get together “weenie roast”, and passing on her life stories to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Everyone knew that when they walked through the doors of her house they would be welcomed with a warm hug, leave with their bellies full, and a reminder that Robbie loved them no matter what. You could know her for 5 minutes or 50 years, and she would treat you as if you were family. It was her way. She was a true gem.
Before her passing, Robbie said she lived a wonderful and colorful life.  We agree.  She loved with her every and last breath and had no regrets. She devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and we all felt her wisdom as we forged our own paths with her steady by our side. She danced, worked, laughed, cried, and loved with everything she had, every step of the way.
Robbie’s survivors are her son H.L. Austin and wife Susan of Alleyton, Texas; son Tim Austin and wife Maria of Alleyton, Texas; son-in-law Larry Marek of Needville, Texas; godson Deryck Pocock of Ovalo, Texas; sister-in-law Helen Beals of Midland, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Robbie was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Henry Lorane Austin, her second husband Henry Ball, her third husband Denver “Buddy” Beene, her first child Helen Louise, her daughter Karla (Austin) Marek, her stepdaughter Sherry (Beene) Adams, her stepson David Beene, and her step granddaughter Penny Adams. Visitation for Robbie will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Eagle Lake Funeral Home on Monday, November 9.  Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday at Eagle Lake Funeral Home
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.

Stephen "Steve" K. Balas - February 20, 1946 - April 20, 2021

Departed: 04/20/2021 (Eagle Lake)
Obituary Preview: A true pillar of the Eagle Lake community was lost Tuesday, April 20, 2021. Stephen “Steve” Kent Balas was born on February 20, 1946 in Lindsay, California. He moved to Texas shortly after and met Linda Thomas Balas, the love of his life, in elementary school at the early age of 6. They went on to become sweethearts in junior high, dated in high school, and remained each other’s stronghold and refuge throughout the many trials and tribulations of their adult lives.
Steve graduated from Eagle lake High School in 1964. Upon his high school graduation, Linda wrote a note in his high school annual about the importance of studying hard and making a successful life. Even as teenagers their love was certain and undeniable. Linda added to the note that she knew he would not disappoint. To say he did not disappoint his dear Linda might be the understatement of a lifetime. Steve went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in pharmacy in 1969. He became the owner of Eagle Lake Drugstore and with the help of his father-in-law Jimmy Thomas, he also became a knowledgeable and successful rice farmer.
He dedicated himself completely and wholly in all facets of his life and took great pleasure in serving and giving back to his community. In addition to two demanding careers, he gave his time unselfishly to and served on the following boards: First National Bank of Eagle Lake, Rice Medical Foundation, Wintermann Foundation, United Methodist Church, Eagle Lake Hospital Board, Texas Pharmacy Association United Drugs a national pharmacy co-op, Texas Rice Producers Legislative Group, U.S. Rice Producers Association, The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Region K Water Planning Group. Steve was also appointed by Rick Perry to the Lower Colorado River Authority for multiple terms and was a member of The Colorado River Alliance and The Colorado River Land Trust.
In addition to serving his community via the numerous boards above, Steve also dearly loved serving the community by filling their prescriptions. A typical trip to the drug store was enhanced by a conversation with or a kind word from Steve. He made it personal and truly cared about those he served. Those who worked at the drug store always knew they were considered more like family than employees and he cared about each of them deeply. Steve and his loving wife Linda loved to travel with family and friends and were fortunate enough to experience many different countries and cultures throughout the world. They also enjoyed entertaining at their beautiful home in Eagle Lake and at The Vineyard, more commonly referred to as the “Duck House” and made their hospitality look and feel effortless. Those of us left to carry on take great comfort in knowing there is a joyous reunion happening in heaven with his children who preceded him in death, Renee Balas Bullard and Brian Thomas Balas. He is survived by his wife, Linda Thomas Balas, his grandsons, Trevor Thomas Bullard, and Brandon Bullard, his brother Tony Balas and his sister Julie Lobpries (Howard), sisters-in-law Marsha Bouldin (Les), Cindy Breen (Rick) son-in-law Steve Bullard (Kathy), niece Rachelle Wesselski (Jamie, Dylan Austin and Casey), nephew Chad Kallina (Nikki, Cadence, Peyton, and Cole)

E. Conner Museum on campus.
He married Janet Richter at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alice TX, on September 11, 1960.  They rode out hurricane Carla in an old wooden house on 9-11-61, on their first wedding anniversary in Alice.   9 – 11 always had a “special” meaning for him.  He has three sons, Michael (wife Donna), Phillip (Debra) and David (wife Shannon).  He has six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  All were the light of his life.
He and Janet moved to Eagle Lake in October of 1963 when he went to work for Texas Eastern Gas Transmission Company.  In January of 1967 he accepted the position as General Manager for Rice Industries, Inc. and was employed there for 37 years until he retired in May 2004.
Shortly after moving to Eagle Lake he became a duck and goose hunting guide. This 30 year adventure included time with the Jimmy Reel hunting club and The Bucksnag Hunting club.  “Big Lou” was the owner of the Eagle Lake Hunting club for 4 years and then finished his guiding escapades with Clifton Tyler Hunting Club.  During this time, he crafted personalized goose calls for many hunters.
He was an avid saltwater fisherman and participated in many tournaments during his younger years.  He was also very active in the Boy Scouts and was assistant scout master for many years.  He coached many Little League teams as his boys were growing up. Louis had quite a sense of humor.  Dinner dates with Big Lou and Momma Janet were always fun – One of the Big Lou-isms was ordering “generic water with diet ice”.  He always got some puzzled looks from a lot of wait staff with that one!
In his younger years he loved hunting and fishing just to watch the day dawn and the sun rise.  He always said, there is nothing better than dawn and early morning on the bays and prairies.”  After he retired and built a home on the lake he said “this is where I want to be”.
Family has chosen to have a private funeral service and burial.
Serving as pallbearers will be Joshua Schorlemmer, Eric Schorlemmer, Matt Williams, Doug Schneider, Will Thomas and Wayne Bowen. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Blair, Wayne Corman, Richard Clipson, Major Benge, Larry Dulaney and Davis Waddell.
