Rosa L. Benton - July 13, 1920 - April 13, 2022

Departed: 04/13/2022 (Cleveland)
Obituary Preview: After gifting everyone she met with warmth and laughter for more than a century, Rosa L. Benton (née Linder) passed away peacefully at home and gained her eternal reward on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Just three months shy of her 102nd birthday, Rosa was forever young at 101-years-old.
Born July 13, 1920, in Atlanta, Georgia, Rosa made Ohio her lifelong home after her father and mother, Henry Linder and Mary Tinsley, a tailor and teacher respectively, joined the Great Migration and moved to Cleveland when she was six-years-old. After graduating from Central Senior High School, Rosa returned to the South for her post-secondary education. In 1942, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Spelman College. She pledged Delta Sigma Theta at that historically Black college for women and was active in the Cleveland Spelman Club and Delta chapter throughout her lifetime. Rosa continued her education at The Atlanta University School of Social Work, earning a Master’s degree in 1944. Even before she graduated, she was already making a professional name for herself by accepting a three-year appointment at the Child Welfare Board in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. For decades, Rosa, a career social worker, helped families through the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court system. Although she stood at only 5’1,” Rosa used every inch of her small, but mighty frame to champion families and protect Ohio’s kids. Rosa’s life cannot be fully described without understanding her relationship with her younger sister, Charlotte. Approximately “1,020,860 minutes apart,” by Charlotte’s estimation, the sisters were often mistaken for twins, but should be more aptly characterized as each other’s shadows. They attended both Spelman and The Atlanta University School together before returning home to support and serve Ohio families. Together, they joined Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, at early ages, where they demonstrated their quiet faith in Christ and expanded their dutiful commitment to service beyond their careers. At Antioch, Rosa was involved in the Wilson Circle, the History Committee, the Loaves and Fishes Outreach Ministry, the church choir, the Women’s and Senior Ministries, and the Board of Trustees. Every first Sunday for 18 years, she and her sister cared for young children in the church nursery. So many of their charges grew up to lovingly call her, “Aunt Rosa.”
She was well-known for her dry sense of humor and natural ability to tell a good joke. Rosa charmed many, whether an individual or an entire audience, with her comedic timing and love of laughter. She was fiercely independent and maintained an active lifestyle well after her 101st birthday.
Rosa is preceded in death by her parents, Henry Linder and Mary Tinsley; husband, Arthur Benton; sister, Charlotte Perry; and niece, Gail Booker Peterson. She leaves to mourn, step-daughter, Antoinette Stoufflet (Brian) and family of Liberty Hills, TX; brother-in-law, Rev. Edward T. Haggins of Warrensville Heights, OH; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, cousins, sorors, and friends.
Rosa will be remembered on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at E.F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home, 2165 East 89th Street, Cleveland, OH. A Delta Sigma Theta Omega Omega service will begin at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at 11:30 a.m., and a memorial service will begin at 12 noon.

Elder Terrance M Curtain , Sr. - October 23, 1953 - April 04, 2022

Departed: 04/04/2022 (Cleveland)
Obituary Preview: Terrance Michael Curtain Sr. was born October 23,1953 to Eva Mae (Foster) and Eugene Edward Curtain Sr. at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.  “Terry” as he was lovingly called, was a kind, caring, respectful and gentle person.  Terry who along with his brothers Eugene Jr. (Linda) and Kevin Sr., loved to eat the baked goods prepared by his sister Sandra (Larry).  Unfortunately those baked goods were intended for sale, but never seemed to make it out of the house in one piece.  To say Terry had a “sweet tooth” would be an understatement.
Terry loved to create things with his hands.  He would create boats out of balsa wood and sell them at Shaker Lakes to park patrons.  This is something that he continued to do throughout his life. One summer Terry won a General Motors car prototype competition held at the Fisher Body company in East Cleveland.  Legend has it that the new body styles of the Chevy Corvettes that came out in the subsequent years, looked strikingly similar to Terry’s award winning prototype model.
Terry was an amazing athlete.  He was often the first choice of neighborhood pick-up games.  Terry's athletic abilities were evident at Shaker Hts High School, as he continuously outperformed  the competition, earning the nickname “Touchdown Terry Curtain”.  Terry won Team MVP that year. One fall day in 1970, in the hallways of Shaker Heights High School, Terry just happened to catch the eye of a certain Linda Jean Clemons, who mentioned to her friend that he was “cute”.  Word got back to Terry and he made his move, and the rest…is history.  Terry and Linda were not alone in making a love connection, as their life-long best friends Walter and Veronica Tresville also were pierced by Cupid’s arrow.  Terry and Linda graduated from Shaker Hts. High School in 1972 and decided then that they wanted to be together. They chose Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where Terry earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1976.  While at OU, Terry aligned with the ideas of “Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service” and became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in 1973.  Terry succeeded in nearly anything he tried.  Kickboxing was no different, he eventually became ranked #2 in the nation, until…”the ropes went up.”
On August 28th 1976 Terry and Linda took their love to the next level and were united in holy matrimony.  To this union were born four sons.  Terrance Jr. (June), Brian (Stephanie), Brandon, and Tyler (Tai).  He was Godly proud of all of their accomplishments.  Not only was he there for good times, but…sometimes was right there with cash in hand, with some bags of groceries, holding up a football sign in the crowd, or waiting with keys to a car.  He loved his entire family.  He was absolutely adored by his 12 grandchildren (TaTyanna, Taylor, Tori, Tristen, Nia,  Tinley-Anne, McKenzie, Brandon Jr., Clover, Adaleigh, Harper, and Kacie).  He loved spending time with them, and often could be seen tossing a ball, playing chase, or napping on the couch.
He was treasured by his “in-love” mothery Marion (Mom) Clemons and the best big brother to Karin and Greg Jordan, Toni and Curtis Porter, Lori and Courtney Rainer, Terri and Walter Clark, Kelly and Brian Robinson, and David and Carole Clemons.  He loved to tout the talents of his 22 nieces and nephews. Terry was an amazing provider for his family, and had an impeccable professional work ethic.  As an Engineer, he used his amazing mind and creativity, for the Caterpillar Tractor Company and later for the Cleveland Pneumatic (BF Goodrich Aerospace), where he inspected commercial airline landing gear.  He took very seriously that “people’s lives were in his hands.”
Terry was a devout believer, who accepted Christ at an early age.  He was baptized at East Mount Zion Baptist Church, in Cleveland Ohio under the Rev. William Downs.  He had the gift of helps, and a passion for people.  Oftentimes Terry was on-site early to open the doors of the church before service started and would often stay late to make sure the building was secured, even though he lived 50 minutes away.
Terry accepted his call in ministry while serving at the Tower of Prayer COGIC in Akron, Ohio under the leadership of his father-in-law the late Elder Burton D. Clemons, where he assisted in multiple ministries including the bus ministry to the National COGIC Holy Convocation. Terry was ordained as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ. In 1994, Terry was installed as the Pastor of the Tree of Life Ministries COGIC by the late Bishop Warren Elijah Miller.  Many lives were impacted by his gospel preaching, revelatory teachings, wise words, and loving care.  This ministry was located at the corner of 59th and Quincy Ave (in the former Eugene’s Cleaners).  Terry was well-known for his compassion for those in need and provided weekly loaves of bread through his ministry.
Toward the end of his life, Terry became ill and had to be hospitalized, but through the determination of his devout wife, he received loving care at home.  Pastor Terrance M. Curtain Sr. transitioned at 4:45pm on Monday April 4, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.  We are heartbroken, yet joyous that he is at rest in the Lord.  We are encouraged to continue to serve the Lord, love people, and fight yet another round.

Obituary Preview: Harold Lee Williams 1943-2022
Former attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland died Tuesday, March 29. Harold developed a passion for the law during undergraduate school and spent his entire legal career as an advocate for the poor. He joined the Legal Aid Society, his first and only job, after graduating from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in 1975 retiring in 2011.
He briefly considered a career in music after studying at the U.S. Naval School of Music and serving in the 392nd U.S. Army Band, Fort Lee, Virginia during the Vietnam Era.
Harold’s calm, low-key personality and dry sense of humor served him well as he took on difficult, almost impossible cases. He forced the city of Cleveland to hire and promote more black police officers, effectively desegregating the department, and stood up to predatory banks that illegally foreclosed on homes. As Managing Attorney for the Consumer Unit he began writing and editing the Ohio Consumer Law Legal Manual, an invaluable resource for lawyers throughout the state. Harold was the first recipient of the William J. Brown Consumer Protection Award in 2010 from the Ohio Attorney General. The award honors individuals who demonstrate unwavering commitment to a safe and fair marketplace and is named for former Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown who created the office's consumer protection section.

Dr. William Walker - May 24, 1925 - March 17, 2022

Departed: 03/17/2022 (Cleveland)
Obituary Preview: Dr. William Walker D.D.S. (Sonny) was born in Charleston, WV on May 24th, 1925, to the late Hezekiah Walker and Flora (Peters) Walker.  He was the second of three children between his older brother, Hezekiah Leon Walker, Jr., and his baby sister Theresa (Walker) Timmons.
He and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1930, where he attended Cleveland public schools including East Technical High School until graduating in 1943.  As a young child he faced the discriminatory issues of a country that continues to struggle with race relations to this day.  He was encouraged by his mother to value education from a young age while finding various trades were either restricted from black people or too dangerous for his liking.
Seeking to broaden his horizons, he enlisted in the Navy in 1943, during the height of WWII. He served his country until 1946 as an extremely rare black Petty Officer, First Class.  Walker led a team of 90 plus soldiers in restocking Navy ships with supplies and ammunition, and rescuing downed pilots in Leyte Gulf with PT boats based in the Philippines.  While serving his country, he was exposed to diverse lifestyles of college educated black people whose families encouraged him to pursue his dreams and to dream big!  With the additional support, love and encouragement of his best friend and brother, Leon Walker, he was determined to pursue his dream of a career in medicine.
He enrolled at the Ohio State University leveraging the GI bill, pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Kappa chapter and received both his Bachelors (1946) and D.D.S. (1957) degrees.  While attending dental school and working at the USPS, he was introduced to his future wife, Janet (Bivens) Walker by her brother, William Bivens.  Janet was the first female black Captain in the Air Force (Wright Patterson AFB) in Ohio.  As a young black couple within the medical profession, they were what today’s culture would call a “power couple”. They married and moved to Cleveland with their firstborn child, Leslie Rochelle, born on September 19th, 1957.  William and Janet had their last child, William Bivens Walker, on October 8th, 1963.
Dr. Walker always served and worked in the black community. As a practicing dentist, Dr. Walker’s first office was located on Superior Avenue. With business booming, Dr. Walker opened a second practice on Lee Road. When the Superior Avenue location burned down during the Cleveland race riots, Dr. Walker laid roots in the Lee-Harvard corridor.
He was a beloved dentist in the community and helped those who could not pay cash by leveraging the barter system.  He went on to partner with the city of Cleveland as Director of the Model Cities Dental Clinics throughout Cleveland’s economically challenged areas, providing free dental services throughout the city, propagating wellness and confidence in numerous smiling patients.  As an established proprietor for nearly 70 years, he prided himself on never referring a patient to collections! His “patient picture” wall of fame showcased many satisfied customers. He was excited to learn of his family’s desire to honor his presence and service to the community by creating “Doc’s On Harvard” restaurant, converting his Lee-Harvard office into a upscale restaurant and lounge as a living legacy.  Although he will not see it open, he was involved in the concept, planning, and menu selections and was ecstatic!
Dr. Walker was also a charter member of the prestigious National Negro Golf Association (NNGA) working with 6 others to establish the Cleveland Chapter.  This trailblazing group played golf around the country and world, breaking down color barriers and establishing golf scholarships and sponsorships throughout the country while creating a fantastic social outlet that continues to thrive today.  The group has fortified many of today’s golf participants with equipment and transportation for golf teams, and bridged the accessibility gap to some of the greatest golfing venues in North America.
