Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a notification to those who knew them. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You may need to provide the text of the obituary, as well as any photos or other materials.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes, you can still write an obituary for someone who passed away years ago. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute to the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include humorous anecdotes or quotes in an obituary to reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I deal with sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

Can I write an obituary for someone who was not well-known or famous?

Absolutely! Obituaries are not just for celebrities or public figures. Anyone who has lived a life worth celebrating deserves to have their story told.

How do I handle conflicting opinions or disagreements when writing an obituary?

In cases where there are multiple family members or friends with different perspectives on the deceased, try to find common ground and focus on the aspects of their life that everyone can agree on.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

You can ask a friend or family member for help, or consider hiring a professional writer or funeral home staff member to assist you.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial contributions in an obituary?

How do I ensure that my loved one's obituary is accurate and respectful?

Take your time when writing the obituary, and proofread carefully to avoid errors. Also, consider having someone else review it before publication to catch any mistakes or omissions.

What if I want to include a quote or poem in an obituary?

Can I write an obituary for someone who died under difficult circumstances?

Yes, even if the deceased's passing was sudden or unexpected, you can still write an obituary that honors their memory and celebrates their life.

Can I include information about the deceased's favorite hobbies or activities in an obituary?

Absolutely! This can help bring their personality and spirit to life for readers who may not have known them well.

How do I know when it's appropriate to publish an online obituary versus a print one?

This depends on your personal preference and the audience you're trying to reach. Online obituaries can be more accessible and shareable, while print ones may be preferred for local communities or traditional newspapers.

What if I want to create a memorial website or online tribute instead of a traditional obituary?

This can be a wonderful way to celebrate your loved one's life and share memories with others. Many websites offer tools and resources for creating online memorials and tributes.
