John Arru - August 03, 1946 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Bristol)
Obituary Preview: John Arru, age 77, of Bristol passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside on Tuesday February 19, 2024 at Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. He was born August 3, 1946 in Siligo, Sardinia to Giovanni Elia Arru and Antonina (Pieddra) Arru.
After finishing school in Siligo, John ventured on to a new life in America where he learned English quickly and became a citizen of the United States. He worked at General Electric as a professional machinist for 36 years. Aside from working hard to build a life for himself, John was truly a jack of all trades. Having a natural talent of being mechanically inclined, John often bought muscle cars and enjoyed repairing them himself. His handy talents expanded further to contracting and building a house he designed for his family.
During his free time, John had a passion for playing golf. Almost entirely self taught, John became an exceptional golfer often shooting the course par or under. He played in and won countless tournaments at Pequabuck Golf Club as well as entered tournaments all over the state. Golf was more than a hobby to John, it was a slight obsession, turning his basement workshop into a golf club smithing area, John also became proficient in designing and putting together his own golf clubs. If you ever played golf with John you could tell how good he was because of how much extra time he had on the golf course. While you would be anxiously carousing for your ball, making your way through the woods or waving your club like a machete at the tall grasses in the rough, John would have speed-walked to his ball and be waiting (impatiently) in the middle of the fairway or on the green where his ball would almost always lie! Had he been playing by himself, he would have shot par for the course and walked 18 holes in about 3 hours. John also had a passion for teaching golf, having tried to teach all of his kids, his youngest son Tony picked up the sport naturally., John poured all of his knowledge and love for the game into teaching it as well. Spending countless hours on the driving range and course with his son, at times carrying him on his pull cart when his young legs were too tired to finish walking the steep hills of the course. Year after year John’s passion for golf grew but so did the everlasting friendships he made at Pequabuck Golf Club. It truly was a well rounded aspect of his life. Sport, family and community.
Aside from golf, Johns other life long passion was his sense for adventure and travel. He was always planning or looking to visit a new place. For years, work and saving for family, bills etc got in the way of his travel plans but as soon as he retired he planned a trip with is friend to circumnavigate the globe! Stoping in California, Hawaii, Australia, China and Singapore. The trip was unfortunately cut short due to medical complications however his trip back home went through Europe and onto New York meaning, his global plans were technically completed. John didn't let his heart disease stop him from traveling though, countless cruises with his wife and friends reminded him that it was an easy way for him to travel and see many places at once. So, without asking for anyone’s schedules John booked a cruise for himself, his son Tony and his wife Kerry to travel to Alaska, later John’s wife Licia also agreed to go. It was one of John’s lifelong dreams to see the natural wonders, mountains and wildlife in Alaska. There he got to see bald eagles, whales, icebergs and countless snow capped mountain peaks. He also discovered his love for silent disco parties aboard the cruise ship.
His other passion was spending time with his family and enjoying life through simple pleasures. Whether it was hiking through the woods, traveling abroad, or going on impromptu fishing trips; he truly had an adventurous spirit and loved sharing it with his kids.
John is survived by his loving wife Licia (Pandolfo) Arru of 50 years. His daughter Cristina Galipeau and fiance David Klemonski. His son Tony Arru and daughter-in-law Kerry (Geary) Arru. He has 3 grandsons, Nathan, Jacob, and Giovanni James Elia. His sister Francesca Tavera along with several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his first born son John Elia Arru and his eldest sister Giovanina Manca. John had a very protective and tough exterior of wanting to take care of everyone. He had a very generous heart and would help anyone he could. We will always carry his memory
in our hearts.
A special Thank you to all the caregivers and nursing staff at The Pines Nursing Rehabilitation Center and Bristol Hospital Emergency Room. Thank you to all the staff in the Critical Care Unit at The Hospital of Central Connecticut for your compassion and care during his last weeks.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours at Dupont Funeral Home on Monday February 26 from 9:30am to 11:30am, followed by a Mass at 12pm at Saint Gregory Parish 235 Maltby Street Bristol, Connecticut.

Elfrieda M. Shields - February 09, 1931 - January 31, 2024

Departed: 01/31/2024 (Bristol)
Obituary Preview: Elfrieda Marie Shields, age 92, passed away on January 31, 2024, to be reunited with her husband of 74 years, Carl, and her 3 children who have passed. She lived at Aviva, Memory Care Unit, since October 29, 2022, where she received extraordinary, loving care. Family is forever thankful to the considerate, loving staff who work there, and making Mom feel safe, secure, and at “home.”
Elfrieda was the daughter of Pauline White Brayall and Clarence Brayall, who passed many years ago. Born in 1931 in Houlton, Maine, she and husband Carl never lost their Maine roots. She was predeceased by 3 of her 5 children; Clarence Brayall, who died as an infant, Steven Michael Shields, and Hilton David Shields. Elfrieda and Carl married when she was 16, survived the death of an infant son, losing the family farm, and other tragedies and circumstances life had in store for them. Their marriage was unusual for the degree of abiding love, loyalty, and deep affection they held for one another for their 74 years together. Carl and Tee-Dee set perfect examples of love, dedication, and a work ethic for their children and families.
Elfrieda was nicknamed Tee-Dee, and was well known in Bristol, for having her own beauty salon, Tee-Dee’s Continental Coiffures, for many years. She and Carl retired early, when Tee-Dee was 62, and spent most of their time at their beloved Rainbow’s End in Mt. Chase, Maine. They were avid country western music fans, and typically went out 3 evenings a week in and around Mt. Chase to hear live music. Their extensive network of friends and family near Mt Chase kept them enormously busy and happy. Most days were spent visiting others or being visited by a near constant stream of visitors who were family or dear friends, pursuing their love of music, and traveling to fill in the gaps with their genealogy efforts. Tee-Dee was known for her prodigious relationship memory, and ability to reconnect loved ones who had been lost. She and Carl were experts at creating chosen families, and taught this to their children.
Tee-Dee is survived by her sister, Ruth Lanscak of Somerset, N.J. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Joy Senesac and beloved husband Robert, of Bristol, Ct., and her son Carl Shields Jr., West Hartford Ct. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Patty Shields of Bristol. Her dear daughter in law Paula Shields and son in law Harvey Brown preceded her in death. She also has many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren in Ct. in the Bristol area, and other cities and states.
Wherever she went, Tee-Dee was known for her love of her husband and children, and open and giving heart. She made over 120 full size afghans, and gave them away to people in her loving sphere, or anyone who needed one. More importantly, she was always an open and loving participant in any conversation with family or friends, and could always be counted on to do the right thing, from a loving and kind perspective. She will be dearly missed.

Pauline Rowe - June 07, 1929 - December 20, 2023

Departed: 12/20/2023 (Bristol)
Obituary Preview: Pauline Anne (Duff) Rowe, a resident of Saint Augustine, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023, at the age of 94. She was born on June 7, 1929, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, to Paul Edward Duff and Mary Elizabeth (Connor) Duff.
Pauline’s life story began in New Castle, Pennsylvania during the Depression era of the 1930’s. Her formative years were guided by loving parents who taught her the values of kindness, generosity, volunteering, integrity and a strong Catholic Faith. When her brother, John, was born in 1938, she gained not only a sibling, but a lifelong friend who would support her throughout her life. World War II made a deep impression on Pauline’s upbringing and immersed a strong sense of American patriotism and reverence to those who served, especially her classmates and friends. In 1947, Pauline graduated from New Castle High School. She then went on to further her education at Slippery Rock State Teacher’s College in Slippery Rock, PA and graduated in 1951. Then, it was off to the East Coast to begin her adult life.
Pauline met her husband, William F. (Rokowski) Rowe when they met as elementary school teachers at LaMonte School in Bound Brook, NJ. They married on June 20, 1954, and began their life’s journey by moving to Long Island, NY. Pauline taught elementary school in Garden City. She and Bill became the loving parents of three children: William Paul, Daniel Charles, and Elisabeth Anne. As Bill furthered his education and received his PhD from New York University, Pauline raised their children. They made their homes in the towns of Bethpage, Baldwin, and Hempstead. They moved to Red Hook, NY in the mid 1960’s as Bill began his education administration career. Then, in the late 1960’s, career aspirations sent them on the move to Somerville, NJ where Bill became Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In 1969, Pauline, Bill and their family moved to Bristol, CT. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Pauline was the pillar of strength for her husband who had become Superintendent of Schools and her young family, while making her mark on the education of those less fortunate in the local school systems. She taught homebound students in the Plymouth and Terryville Public Schools and found it incredibly rewarding. Always one to lend a hand, Pauline volunteered in local charitable organizations, such as the Bristol WSO and the St. Joseph Church Ladies Guild. It was at this time that she caught the antiques and collectibles bug. If you attended flea markets and antiques shows in CT, PA or NC, you may have visited her booth, “The Pearls of Pauline.” She had a creative eye for décor and display and enjoyed making a sale and new friends!
Pauline’s devotion to family was paramount in her life. She taught her children the same values as she grew up with and encouraged them to grow through further education and pursue their individual talents. Arts, theatre, music, family gatherings, and travel were the cornerstones of family life in the Rowe household. A proud homemaker and excellent cook, Pauline strived to make everyone’s life well rounded and rooted in love and Faith in God.
After her husband’s death in 1987, Pauline moved back to her roots in New Castle. She made this new chapter in her life a fulfilling one. Pauline’s spirit found its rhythm in travel, the arts, antiques and ballroom dancing, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels for many years. Friends Lynn and Terry Unangst, Patricia Straccia, the Frank Simpson family, the Edwin Stevens family, the Dess family, neighbors from New Castle, and the ladies of The Trading Post, were very special to her. Outgoing and personable, Pauline never met a stranger...everyone she met was made to feel comfortable. In the mid 2000’s, Pauline lived throughout FL and NC to be near her daughter Beth and her husband, Francisco (Frank), who was like a son to her. Tending to you, our dear mother, during the last years and months of your life was a gift. We would like to thank the staff and nurses on the 2nd floor of Westminster of St. Augustine Assisted Living for their boundless energy and compassion. You are Angels of Mercy! Pauline leaves behind three children: Paul Rowe of Southport, NC, Daniel Rowe and his wife, Melissa, of Conway, SC, and Beth Anne Rivera and her husband, Francisco, of St. Augustine FL. Her brother John E. Duff and his wife, Margaret of Greensburg, PA, were the mainstays of her life and gave immeasurable gifts of love, laughter and support. She loved you all to the moon and back! She also leaves behind her grandson Clinton Rowe of Sayreville, NJ, granddaughter Tammy Messina of HI, several nieces and nephews of the Duff, Rokowski, and Kozikowski families. Just a mention of your name brought a smile and a fond memory to share. She loved you! Pauline had a special affection for Lalena Rivera Salafia, her children Skyler and Michael and the entire Rivera family. The VanWagoner family of Bristol, CT was, and still is, a tribute to great friendship. You all meant so very much to her...she loved knowing all of you! Rest in peace, dear mother. We miss you dearly, but know you are in Paradise with our Lord and Creator. Your earthly journey has ended. Your Heavenly journey is endless!
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 33 Queen St., Bristol, CT on June 21, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol, CT.
