Kenneth L. Fox - February 09, 1927 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Presque Isle)
Obituary Preview: Washburn - Rev. Kenneth L Fox, 97, passed away peacefully April 29, 2024, surrounded by family and his new friends at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou. Ken was married to Verdella Carter Fox, who predeceased him in 2021 after 73 years of marriage.
Ken leaves behind a legacy of kindness, good humor and solid faith in his relationship with his Lord and Savior. He and Verdie dedicated their lives to their family and their church families. He was proud of his peace-time military service, which took him abroad to Italy for an adventure. Later in life he and Mom enjoyed several bus trips to visit family in Florida and Texas, and re-reading Mom’s journal notes of one of those journeys was a favorite pastime.
Dad proudly kept a record of the weddings, funerals and baptisms that he officiated. From 1972 through 2015, he performed 170 weddings, 258 funerals and committals, 116 baptisms. We referred to that list many times as we reminisced and needed help with names to match the memories.
Ken is survived by his 3 children, Larry (Sylvia) Fox, Curt (Debbie) Fox and Charlotte (Art) Griffin, who consider themselves blessed for their wonderful childhood and parents. Grandchildren Brad, Elliot, Chris, Mike, Rebecca and Abby, and seven great-grandchildren added to the fun in his life. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Carolyn McLaughlin.
Ken was also predeceased by his parents Stanley and Charlotte “Lottie” Fox, sister Avis and her husband Garth Story, brother Harry and his first wife Shirley Fox. In-laws Earl and Abbie Carter, sister-in-law Betty and Ron Wright, brothers-in-law Alden and Clayton Carter and sweet daughter-in-law Cathy Giggey Fox, who left us far too soon.
Ken’s family would like to thank all of the wonderful people that made his life the excellent journey that it truly was. Special thanks to his Oxbow and West Chapman church families, his great neighbors, and the wonderful staff members of the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou, where he resided the final 3 months of his blessed life. I’m sure he left a smile on many of your faces…he was that kind of guy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 4 at Duncan Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle, Maine. Visitation from 10 AM until service time at noon. Pastor Nathan Gardiner will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date. Donations in dad’s memory may be made to West Chapman AC Church (PO Box 194 Mapleton, Maine 04757).
You go right home, now, Ken….

Bud was born on September 18, 1926, in Washburn, the son of Malcolm and Mildred (Duncan) Umphrey. He attended Washburn High School and then enlisted in the United States Army,
fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War 2. He was on a troop ship headed for Korea when the United States dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima. While he was stationed in Korea he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. His duties consisted of taking charge of the motor pool and supervising all maintenance and repair work. He was in charge of a driver's school for Korean civilians. While in the Army he received the Army commendation ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Philippines Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Bud was honorably discharged in October 1946.
Upon his return home, he went to work on his father's farm, Malcolm Umphrey and Sons, Inc.
Bud married Betty Lavway on August 5, 1947, and they were married for 74 years. They had three children, Michael Isaac, Paul Jasper, and Hollie Jayne.
In 1949 Bud's father moved to Florida to start a new farming venture. At this time, Bud and Betty took over the farms here.
He was a member of the Washburn First Baptist Church and served in several positions including head Deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and Trustee. Born in Vermont in April of 1943, he was the son of Cecil Russell and Emma (Weiss) Russell. He grew up in a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated from Wethersfield High School (WHS) in 1961. As a young man, Todd was an avid sports enthusiast who was a member of the WHS basketball and golf teams. He then matriculated at Ottawa University (OU) in Ottawa, Kansas, and played on the Braves’ varsity basketball team during his time there as a student. After graduating from OU in 1966, he enlisted in the US Army as an officer from 1966-1969 and served in the Vietnam conflict during this time period.
After being honorably discharged, Todd earned a masters degree in physical education from Wichita State University (WSU) in Wichita, Kansas in 1973; subsequently, he commenced a position as an elementary physical education teacher in the Wichita Public Schools (WPS). He taught in the WPS for 26 years, where one of his crowning achievements was helping to create Woodland Health and Wellness Magnet, a unique health and wellness themed elementary school. While he maintained his high standard of teaching and continued to be a phenomenal father to his sons Brook and Trent Russell, he made time to earn a masters in sports administration from WSU in 1986 and an EdD from Oklahoma State University in 1991. Todd retired from the WPS in 1999 to take a faculty position in the Education Department at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Montana. He later accepted a faculty position in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Department of Education, necessitating his move to Maine in 2008. He was married twice, and he served as a caregiver for Kaye Russell, his second wife, as she ultimately succumbed to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
Sports and recreation were always central to Todd’s identity. During his tenure as an elementary PE teacher in Wichita, he helped to shape the lives of numerous student athletes at Wichita North High School through coaching volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Throughout his life, Todd derived great pleasure from distance running. In his younger years, he medaled in several competitive marathons, and continued his near-daily early morning training runs even past his 80th birthday. However, Todd’s primary passion was focused on outdoor recreation and conservancy. He found peace and meaning in wild places, and throughout his life was able to experience these wild places via bicycle, canoe, kayak, skis, snowshoes, and on foot. Hiking was Todd’s preferred mode of transportation in the backcountry, and after the age of 50 he hiked all 2,100+ miles of the Appalachian Trail and all 2,600+ miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. For his backpacking adventures, Todd adopted the trail name ‘Slim Gym’, and made countless friends on his many through hikes. Most recently, he enjoyed spending time on the trail with his beloved friend and hiking companion, Linda Keister of Presque Isle, Maine. In the last few years, Todd had moved his focus to the high elevation Colorado Trail, and was planning to attempt it again this coming summer.
Todd is survived by his sons, Brook Russell (Maya), of South Carolina, and their children, Zara (15) and Colin (13), and Trent Russell (Shari) of California, and their children, Tyler (12), Meredith (8), and Zachary (6).
