Arthur "Bill" W. Joslin Jr. - October 18, 1954 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Latham)
Obituary Preview: LATHAM - Arthur William Joslin Jr, known as Bill or Billy, passed away suddenly on April 21, 2024 at the age of 69.
He was born in Glen Burnie, MD on October 18, 1954. He moved to Latham, NY at a very young age. While he lived in many houses in his life, he raised his four children in the home his parents raised him in. He loved his home and took pride in it always looking up to his standards. The house changed over the years, but the love in it always stayed the same.
Bill knew everyone and everyone knew Bill. Bill was a giver and wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back or hire you for odd jobs to help you make ends meet. We know he left a lasting impact on many people throughout his life.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Theresa (McDonald) Joslin. Some would say she was his better half. We wouldn't disagree but we also know that they were the perfect pair. Together in life and in love they raised four children: Michael (Nana) Joslin, Kathleen Joslin, Erin (Sean) Daly and William (Breeanne) Joslin. He is also survived by his sisters Evelyn Joslin, Barbara Pattillo (late Kenneth), Deborah McDonald (late Michael), niece Katelyn McDonald, godson Shane (Michelle) McDonald, as well as a large extended family. Bill is predeceased by his parents Arthur William Joslin Sr and Evelyn Loretta (Knapp) Joslin and stepmother Phyllis Joslin.
Bill's greatest joy in recent years were his four grandchildren; Cailin, Reagan and Adalyn Daly and Thomas Joslin. He loved watching them play sports and seeing how they grew each day. We have many wonderful memories of our family vacations in Myrtle Beach, SC. If you've ever sat at a bar with Bill, we are sure you have heard a loving story about a child or grandchild. We loved him more than words can say. He may have been rough on the outside, but he was our whole world and the void that we all feel now will be with us forever.

Joyce D. Hogan - January 05, 1946 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Latham)
Obituary Preview: LATHAM - Joyce Ann Dempster Hogan passed away on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Despite this terrible disease changing how she spent her days her spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Joyce was born in Little Falls, NY on January 5th, 1946, to Stella Dempster and John Dempster (Darmstadter). Despite an absent father, who she had no recollection of ever having spoken a word, Joyce's childhood was filled with love. In addition to her loving mother, she had several uncles and aunts who treated her as if she were their own. She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1964, where she was involved in basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading. With the financial support of her dear Uncle Carl and Aunt "Meetsie" Marian Kopp, she moved to Albany to work and to attend the State University of Albany. It was during this time she met the love of her life, Arthur Hogan. When they met, her future husband was a handsome bank teller, and she often spoke about how she made sure to get in his line when cashing her paychecks!
Joyce and Art married on October 24, 1970, and enjoyed many happy years together residing in Latham, raising their two children, and enjoying all of the delights of parenthood and one another. They enjoyed supporting their many nieces and nephews whether on a court or field or school play, and even more enjoyed the same with their children, David and Sue. They were long-time communicants of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and big supporters of Shaker High School athletics. Sadly, some of her life's joy came to an end when Art died suddenly in 1993.
Joyce's later years brought back much of the spark that she demonstrated as a young mother. Above all, Joyce loved her grandchildren Spencer, Max, and Kelsey whom she would tell anyone who would listen how there was, "no greater love than that of a grandchild." She attended as many of their events as she could and was always on the sidelines or in the audience cheering them on.
Joyce enjoyed simple things, such as McDonald's filet of fish sandwiches, Ted's Fish Fry and reading the Times Union, simple pleasures her son David would bring with him each time he'd visit her during the last 15 months of her life when she was no longer mobile. Joyce loved Cape Cod. Throughout her adult life, the family would make yearly visits, beginning when she and Art were newlyweds, and ending in recent years when travel became a burden. Each time she crossed the Sagamore Bridge she'd repeat that she was, "leaving her worries behind" and that's when she turned into "beach Joyce". She loved Craigville Beach dipping her toes into the ocean and walking up and down Main Street in Hyannis and Commercial Street in Provincetown. Her children would only learn in their adulthood that there were other beaches on the Cape, she loved Craigville Beach that much!
She was a faithful New York Yankee and Dallas Cowboy fan, and never remarried due to the age difference between her and Troy Aikman. She loved Elvis Presley's gospel music, and listening to Alan Jackson and Toby Keith.
Joyce loved to shop, always finding a bargain, and often buying just to buy, even if she did not need it. Joyce and her daughter Sue would often shop till they dropped at the outlets in Lee, MA. In later years when it became more difficult for her to get around, those trips turned into weekly Walmart visits and dinners out with Sue and her boyfriend Rick.
Joyce worked for many years for the Town of Colonie, and before that for Thomas Nicolla, PT, and Harry A. Allen, Esq.
Joyce is survived by her son David Hogan and his fiancé Jennifer Fielding, daughter Suzanne, and her significant other Richard Lehnert as well as grandchildren Spencer, Max, and Kelsey.
She is also survived by her sister Lucille Shepardson, in-laws Alice Hogan Murabito, William McCormick, Diane Hogan, and Julie Dempster, her favorite cousin and life-long partner in crime Kay Martin, many wonderful nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews, whom she loved dearly, and her best friend Linda Renchkovsky.
She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, mother Stella, brother Jack, nephews Jeffrey Shepardson, Jimmy and Danny Murabito, Scott McCormick, and Fred Hogan, faithful dog Olivia Travolta Hogan, and numerous cats. In the words of Joyce (and Bill Hayley), "See you later alligator, after 'while Crocodile'."
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church (chapel), 498 Watervliet Shaker Rd., Latham. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment and Rite of Committal to follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands where Joyce will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Arthur.

Frank E. Horn, Sr. - July 07, 1944 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Latham)
Obituary Preview: FRANK E. HORN SR.
ALBANY - Frank E. Horn, 79 of Albany, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 24th, 2024 at Evergreen Commons Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in East Greenbush with his beloved family at his side.
Frank was born on July 7th, 1944, in Albany NY, the son of the late Frank E. Horn and Ruth Sternfeld Horn. Upon his father’s passing in 1956 when he was only twelve years old, Frank was quickly thrust into the role of “man of the house” having to help provide for the family from that point forward.
Frank graduated from Phillip Schuyler High-School in 1963 and immediately joined Laborers’ Local 190 where he worked tirelessly for over thirty years. He also worked for a short stretch as a Teamster, in support of the movie, “Ghost Story”. Upon retiring as a laborer, Frank became employed at New York State Office of General Services where he had the pleasure of working with the grounds crew at the University at Albany; occasionally catching a glimpse of the New York Giants as they practiced. He would remain in that position for another fifteen years before fully retiring. Frank was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. In 1980, he moved his family to East Berne where he enjoyed the privilege of being able to walk a few yards to his favorite hunting spot or to a nearby pond to take a few casts. He often hosted morning hunts with his sons and their friends during deer season. And believe me, when Frank’s group was in the woods, the deer were almost certainly safe from harm!
If you asked Frank how he was doing, he would probably reply, “I’m broke”. However, he arguably died a rich man as he leaves behind the legacy of a wonderful family and a life well lived. Frank is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his sons Frank J. Horn, Michael Sherry (Carol), Frank E. Horn (Lisa) and Christopher Horn (Tara); his daughters Theresa Crawford (Dejuan) and Renee Amoroso (Mario). And yes, you read that correctly, he had two sons named Frank. He is also survived by his sister Judith Berben, his grandchildren Ashley, Tyler, Michael, Kaleb, Matthew, Ariana, Jack, Ryan, Elaina, and Giada, his great granddaughter Chloe, and several neices and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Ruth Horn and Marie Horn, his nephew Joseph Berben, as well as his niece Linda (Ruhl) Smith.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours on Monday, April 1st, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd, Latham.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, 10:00 am at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Rd., Loudonville.
Interment and Rite of Committal to follow the mass at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie.

John F. Hogarty - October 25, 1948 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Latham)
Obituary Preview: JOHN F. HOGARTY
TROY - John Francis Hogarty was an incredible man who was always thoughtful, considerate, and kind. He passed away in the comfort of his home on March 19, 2024 due to cancer. John handled his passing just like he handled life: with strength, a good sense of humor, a calm demeanor, and grace.
Born the seventh of ten children to Irish immigrant parents in the Bronx, he was raised as a devoted Catholic and remained committed to his faith throughout his life.
John was also a lifelong learner. He obtained a degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College in his 20s and an MBA from Dowling College in his 50s. He could fix nearly anything by reading the manual, which he would often obtain from the local library.
When he was called to duty by his country during the Vietnam War, John served with honor, and retained his gentle nature. Despite his tendency to be quiet and reserved, he became a member of the Screen Actors Guild, with a notable speaking role in a Robert Redford film.
John, aka Poppa, aka Daddy Dukes, enjoyed all types of music, especially folk, and he was a big fan of local public radio. Many memories with his family were made attending concerts of his favorite artists, whose songs became a soundtrack of our lives. His affinity for music was rivaled by his fondness for sunsets, Costco, and gardening. John could often be found out in the yard "digging in the dirt" and he has instilled that love of growth and sustainability in his children.
Above all, John was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 44 years, and he was a father figure to many, even beyond his actual 5 children, or as he would call them all, kiddos.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret Hogarty, his father-in-law Dallas Lee Hogge, his brothers Eddie, Martin, Michael, and Tommy, and his sister Mary. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, his daughters Heather Ferrero (Joseph), Jennifer Arsell (Craig), Erin O'Brien (TJ), Meghan Liguori (Patrick), and Aileen Sohl (Johnny), his grandchildren Anna, Jamie, Liam, Lily, Sean, James, Thomas, and Dylan, as well as his mother-in-law Marguerite Hogge, his siblings Patricia, Joseph (Stacey), Kevin, and Peter (Randi), and many others who loved him for the sweet, funny, caring man that he was and will always be remembered to be. We know that he will be welcomed and accepted into God's arms just as he welcomed and accepted everyone into his home and his heart.
Calling hours will be held at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham, NY on Thursday, March 21 from 4-7pm. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Rd., Latham on Friday, March 22 at 10:30am, followed by interment with military honors at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

Paul E. Wickert - February 26, 1940 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Latham)
Obituary Preview: PAUL E. WICKERT
Paul E. Wickert, age 84, passed away peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on March 8, 2024 wrapped up in the love of his devoted family.
Paul was born in Albany, New York on February 26, 1940, son of the late John Sr. and Sophie Wickert. As a young boy, Paul spent countless hours exploring the outdoors, where he initially developed his lifelong love for nature and wildlife. He graduated from Albany High School in 1959, at which time he served in the New York Army National Guard in the 27th and 227th Signal Battalions until his honorable discharge in 1965. Paul enjoyed his time working as a floor guard at Guptill's Roller Skating Arena for many years, where he first met the love of his life, Debbie Faith. Paul had many friends at Guptill's, and returned year after year to lead the Grand March at Old Timers' Night, an annual tradition for his generation to reunite and skate to the music of their time. Paul and Debbie married on December 20,1975. Together, they had two children - Jennifer and Justin - who adored him beyond measure and for whom he modeled kindness, sacrifice, a tremendous work ethic, and the best sense of humor. From humble beginnings and over the course of his lifetime together with his wife Debbie, Paul poured his whole heart and many talents turning his family's house into a beautiful home, taking great pride in his beautiful landscaping and especially his perfectly green, perfectly kept lawn. Paul was his children's number one fan, spending many hours cheering them on at the pool and the bowling alley. For many years, Paul loved vacationing each summer at Sun Castle in Lake George, creating a lifetime of wonderful family memories swimming, fishing, boating, feeding the ducks, toasting marshmallows on the charcoal grill, and shouting to the Minne-Ha-Ha "blow your horn!"
Paul worked at Niagara Mohawk at the Albany Steam Station in Glenmont for thirty years until he retired in 2002, where he was affectionately known as "Wick" by his treasured co-workers. He was honored with the Spirit of Light Award in 1986 in recognition of his significant contributions to Niagara Mohawk's safety objectives. In 1992, he completed Niagara Mohawk's Leadership Program, which served him well when he was one of many public servants who answered the call to Watertown, NY during the Great Ice Storm of 1998 that knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of Northern New Yorkers. Paul loved his years at "NiMo" and especially, sharing his favorite fishing spot there with his son Justin, where they spent hours casting their lines in the Hudson River. Paul also was a self-employed painter and paperhanger for decades, a love he never outgrew, with his more recent projects focusing on his home and the homes of his children. He was a member of IBEW Local 97 for over fifty years, was also once a member of Painters Local 201, and was a life member of the Watervliet-Colonie Elks Club for the past forty-eight years.
Since retiring, Paul lived the humble and simplistic life he designed and adored, enjoying his wife's delicious cooking and their weekend restaurant outings, attending daily mass and greeting the parishioners at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, doing crossword puzzles and the daily jumble, watching golf, bowling, nature shows, and the news (especially the weather!), and feeding his backyard birds in the winter months and watching them year round, particularly the cardinals. He loved being at home, both indoors and out, and at the homes of his children, where he and Debbie treasured time with them and their grandchildren over many holidays and celebrations. From plays at Proctors Theatre and three-mile walks every day with his daughter Jennifer during the pandemic, to fishing and hanging out at the baseball field with his son Justin, to attending countless school celebrations, plays, and ball games with Matthew, Bryce, Julian, Jack, and Ellery. Paul's whole heart was wrapped up in spending special time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, who loved their Poppy to the moon and back. Paul was a boundlessly kind, unassuming, and gentle man, with a smile or helping hand for anyone he encountered. He will be dearly missed by so many, but especially his wife Debbie, Jennifer, Justin, Mickey, Lindsy, and his grandchildren.
And because he never really retired, he worked right up until this past fall as a ranger at the Mill Road Acres Golf Course, where he enjoyed meeting people, the fresh air, watching golf, and working as hard at 83 years old as he did throughout his whole life, dating back to his first jobs delivering newspapers, setting bowling pins, and lifeguarding.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Deborah M. (Faith) Wickert, his devoted children Jennifer (Mickey) Houlihan and Justin (Lindsy) Wickert, and his beloved grandchildren Matthew Paul and Jack Houlihan, Bryce and Ellery Wickert, and Julian Gildea, along with his brothers-in-law Jack Stinson and John Faith Jr., sister-in-law Janice Faith, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, John Sr. and Sophie Wickert, siblings John Wickert Jr. and Carol (Wickert) Perry, beloved aunt and uncle Elizabeth and Francis Kowalskey, and sister-in-law Cathelene Stinson.
Paul's family would like to thank his wonderful doctors, the amazing nurses, and supportive patient care technicians who cared for him over the past few months, with special thanks to Father Tallman of St. Peter's and Paul's pastor and friend, Father Burke, who on a moment's notice and late at night, both arrived at Paul's bedside to pray over him in his final hours.
