George O. Walker - March 06, 1942 - September 03, 2023

Departed: 09/03/2023 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: George Oliver Walker was born to Willie and Aretha Walker, on March 26, 1942, in Richmond, Virginia.  Willie was a rail worker and Aretha was a homemaker.
The product of a blended family, George was the last of nine siblings.  He shared a household with his youngest siblings, James, Richard and Earline Walker in the Redhook housing projects in Brooklyn, New York.  George graduated from Chelsea High School and worked several odd jobs. During this period, he met his future wife, Nancy Simmons.  George and Nancy married on November 27, 1962.  They quickly started a family and briefly lived in Queens and Brownsville before eventually settling at the Sheepshead-Nostrand Public Housing.
Their marriage (61 years and counting) would produce three children...George, Jr., Geraldine and Michael.  Six months after Michael’s birth, George landed a job with United Parcels Services (UPS). To him, it was the toughest job he ever had and considered quitting his new job.  Thanks to Nancy’s support and encouragement, George kept his job and faithfully executed his duties for over 35 years.
Pro-union, George served as a shop steward for many years and was deeply respected by his co-workers.  After retirement, George and Nancy relocated to Delaware and obtained their “dream” retirement home.  They paved the way for many of their relatives to relocate, too and now are surrounded by over 30 relatives who now call Delaware home.
George was a tremendous husband and father and was committed to supporting his family and friends.  His family tree produced three children, eight grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, in addition to countless cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
He left this earth on September 3, 2023, at home, surrounded by his loved ones.  While he may be gone and deeply missed by his family and friends, most importantly...George Oliver Walker will never be forgotten.

Joyce Lavon Bowers - February 20, 1952 - August 18, 2023

Departed: 08/18/2023 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Laveon (Blocksom) Bowers, 71, was called from labor unto reward at her personal residence in Dover, Delaware, on August 18, 2023.  Born on February 20, 1962, she was the youngest of the thirteen children of the late Fredrick and Viola Blocksom of Seaford, Delaware.
Joyce commenced her education at Frederic Douglass School in Seaford.  She graduated in 1969 from Seaford High School in Seaford, Delaware.  IN 1973, she obtained a degree in business administration from Delaware State College (now Delaware State University).
Joyce commenced her professional career at the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).  After a short stint at DPI, she became an employee of Delaware State University.  With a unique disposition and the rare ability to wittingly engage, she became a mainstay in the administration office, creating unforgettable moments for the many students and colleagues she encountered.  On September 20, 1981, she was united in holy matrimony to Carlton Bowers, Sr.
Joyce professed her faith in Jesus Christ as a child at the Church of God in Seaford, Delaware.  She later became a faithful and dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church.  In her later years, she was actively involved in various committees - supporting food prep and caring for the elderly, among others.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by four brothers, Otho, Sr., Harold, William, Sr. and Warren Blocksom; five sisters, Marie Blocksom, Betty Cannon, Judy Abbot, Marie Ingram Brooks and Doris Jenkins.

Alvina Mae Bethel - March 26, 1943 - August 08, 2023

Departed: 08/08/2023 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Born on March 26, 1943, Alvina Mae Bethel was the daughter of Syria and Claudia Mae Fleming. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after her parents had moved from Enterprise, AL, during the Great Migration.  They were part of the exodus of African Americans out of the South who were looking for a better life.  The Fleming family lived in the Beltzhoover neighborhood of Pittsburgh.  Her father, Syria, was a sanitation worker and her mother, Claudia, did “Days work cleaning houses”.  The smoke from the Steel mills hung heavily over their home when the mills illegally operated at night.
Shortly after Alvina Mae’s birth, her father was drafted to fight in World War II as part of a “Colored Infantry Unit” in Germany. Claudia took her daughter and returned to the family homestead in Alabama, where they stayed until Syria was mustered out of the Army.  From there they moved back to Pittsburgh where two more children were added to the family. From there the family went to Brownsville, in Brooklyn, New York, and later to the Canarsie Projects where she lived until she was married. Four of Alvina Mae’s siblings were born in Brooklyn.
Alvina Mae shouldered some responsibility as the oldest of seven children but she got good grades in school. She learned to knit, crochet, and sew making many of her own clothes. While attending Thomas Jefferson High School, Alvina Mae was a part of the chorus, played viola in the orchestra, and was a student librarian.  She graduated in 1960 when she was 17 and married Walter Bethel on September 15, 1962. They celebrated their 60th anniversary last year. While her husband was in the United States Army serving in Germany during the Cold War, Alvina Mae entered New York Community College and earned an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene.  Upon graduation in 1965, she was inducted into the Tau Phi Sigma Honor Society.
After her husband returned from Germany Alvina Mae Bethel, and her husband were active in their church, Eastern Baptist. Their pastor knew Major Bernard who was then the officer at the Bedford Temple Salvation Army in Brooklyn, New York and eventually, they began teaching Sunday School there in the afternoon.  They came to the attention of the Divisional Youth Secretary who offered them a position as Corps helpers at the Stapleton Staten Island Corps. In the midst of this in 1966 their first child, Dorcas Jeanine Bethel was born.
Alvina Mae and Walter eventually became soldiers and entered the School for Officer Training in September 1968 in Undaunted Session when the school was in the Bronx.  As far as we know, they were the first married American Black couple to enter into training in the Eastern Territory and possibly in the United States. While in the training school, the cadets were asked who wished to serve in the inner city.  Remember that the inner cities were burning in the US and there were riots after Marting Luther King’s assassination in April 1968.  Alvina Mae and Walter were the only cadets from their session to volunteer. Consequently, they spent their entire ministry ministering in the inner cities. At the time of their graduation, there were only five Black Corps.
In June 1970 Lieutenants Alvina Mae and Walter were assigned to an outpost in Arlington Heights, Pennsylvania. They were driven to their new appointment with a police escort and lived in the projects because they couldn’t find quarters for the family.  While living in the project, their first son, Damon Walter Bethel was born in December 1970.  Arlington Heights was a short distance away from Beltzhoover, and the same orange smoke from the steel mills hovered over their apartment on sweltering summer nights causing them not to be able to open their windows. They found this situation to be intolerable; they were the only officer family living in public housing but God opened doors.  Someone suggested to them that they should invite the Divisional Commander and his wife to their home for dinner and so they did.  Every time Alvina Mae took something from the stove everyone at the table had to get up.  When the DC asked why they didn’t open the windows, they explained about the orange smoke.  By the end of the meal, they had the DC’s permission to look for a house. Shortly thereafter they moved into a house.
In 1972 they moved to their second appointment in the Homewood-Brushton section of Pittsburgh and their third child, David Michael Bethel was born. Alvina Mae and Walter oversaw the construction of that corps present building and their fourth child, Daniel Allen Bethel was born shortly after the building was dedicated.  The couple became Captains and spent almost 10 years there before moving to the Pittsburgh Westside Salvation Army.
In 1981 Alvina Mae and Walter were transferred to the Bushwick Corps in Brooklyn, New York.  They were a short distance away from the Brooklyn neighborhoods where they had grown up.  In 1984 they moved to the Philadelphia Germantown Avenue Corps.  In 1990 Majors Bethel moved to the Miles Park Corps in Cleveland Ohio, the oldest Black Corps in the United States, and oversaw the renovation of the building.
After that, and to their surprise Alvina Mae and Walter were moved to Boston South End and later to Boston Harbor Light from where they retired 21 years ago, and relocated to Dover, Delaware.  For the first 12 years of their retirement, Alvina Mae and Walter volunteered once a week at the Wilmington, Delaware preschool and they also taught a Bible Class for senior citizens.  Alvina Mae also counted the Sunday offering until this past February.
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Alvina Mae Bethel was Promoted to Glory.  She was predeceased by her son, Damon Walter Bethel.
She leaves behind her husband of over 60 years, Walter Bethel; her daughter, Dorcas Bethel; son,  David Bethel and daughter-in-law Cindy, and son Daniel Allen Bethel and daughter-in-law Sarah Bethel; sister, Orrie Hernandez, sister, Reverand Marietta Alcide; brother, Lloyd Fleming and sister-in-law, Marsha Fleming, Dominique Riddick and brother-in-law, Steven Riddick; eleven grandchildren, Naomi, Donovan, Jordan, Maya, Aaron, Isaiah,  Kimberly, Kayla, Wiliam, Sophia, and Damon Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews,  great nieces, great nephews, and four great-grandchildren by marriage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects, attend funeral services, and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include a brief story or anecdote about the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers visualize the person being remembered.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can ensure that your life story is told accurately and honestly, while also taking some burden off your loved ones during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may allow for corrections or updates.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived or removed after a certain period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to an obituary and help capture the essence of the person being remembered.

Should I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, this can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause that was important to them. Be sure to include any relevant details about where donations can be sent or how they will be used.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have resources to help you locate old obituaries.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

Yes! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can still be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

DON'T WORRY! Many funeral homes offer assistance with writing obituaries, or you can hire a professional writer specializing in obituaries. You can also ask a friend or family member for help.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to exercise discretion when writing the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on negative aspects.

Can I include humor in an obituary?
