Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life and be able to provide accurate information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, accomplishments, and charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, as well as any photos or other materials.

Can I write my own obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may be editable depending on the platform.

What if I want to include a special message or quote in the obituary?

This is perfectly fine! A special message or quote can add personal touches to the obituary and make it more meaningful.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error or inaccuracy in an obituary, contact the publication or funeral home immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistake as soon as possible.

Can I write an obituary for someone who was cremated?

Absolutely! An obituary can be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of whether they were cremated or had a traditional burial.

What if I want to include a memorial service or celebration of life information in the obituary?

This is perfectly fine! Including details about memorial services or celebrations of life can help inform friends and family about upcoming events.

Can I include social media handles or hashtags in an obituary?

Sometimes! Check with the publication first to see if they allow social media handles or hashtags in their obituaries. This can be a great way to encourage online tributes and sharing.

How do I know what information to include in an obituary for someone who was private?

If the person was private, focus on sharing general information about their life, such as their occupation, education, and hobbies. Avoid including sensitive or personal details that they might not have wanted shared publicly.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died under difficult circumstances?

Yes! An obituary can still be written for someone who died under difficult circumstances, such as addiction or suicide. Focus on celebrating their life and legacy rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Can I use an online template or example as inspiration for writing an obituary?

Absolutely! Online templates and examples can provide valuable guidance and inspiration when writing an obituary. Just be sure to customize it to fit your loved one's unique life and personality.
