Nicholas "Nick" J. Shiek II - Unknown - July 21, 2022

Departed: 07/21/2022 (New Bedford)
Obituary Preview: Nicholas J. Shiek II, “Nick”, 73, of New Bedford, recently passed away at St Luke’s Hospital, on July 21st, 2022, after a long period of illness. He was born in Albany, NY and eventually they moved to Brockton, MA. From there, he moved to Middleboro where he lived for many years before coming to New Bedford, MA with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret Helen (May) and Nicholas John Shiek. He was one of six children, the only male of his siblings. He spent his early life with his family on a small farm in New York. Nick was a hard worker and spent a lot of his years working as an automotive mechanic, with a vast amount of knowledge on all types of vehicles. Nick enjoyed spending his time watching movies and sports, cooking for his grandchildren, and spending time with his family. He loved to find new recipes on the internet and create them for his family. He adored his cat, Punk, and his two birds. He would often let his two birds fly around his room while he cleaned their cage, and they would always land on his shoulders and nuzzle him. His cat would follow him around his home, with affection that he insisted was done to coerce him into giving her treats, but even after he would give her snacks, she would still cuddle at his feet. There was pure love. Truly a selfless man, Nick always chose to put his family first. They were incredibly important to him, and he loved to support them. Until the very end, he told his son, Ben, that he was proud to watch him create art and hone his craft. He was proud of his daughter, Nichole, and how well she was adapting to becoming a mother to his wonderful grandchildren: Liam and Katerina. Whenever his favorite donut shop announced new donuts, he was quick to decide to buy some and bring them to his grandchildren. He often kept his feelings to himself, as he didn’t want to bring worry to his family, but he was a very comforting man. He will be remembered for his love, his selflessness, and his quick wit. Anytime he spoke to someone, they would remark his ability to lighten the mood with a joke or his sarcasm. Most importantly, he will be remembered as a man who loved his family. His family was as large as his affection for them. Nick was loved by his wife Sharon of New Bedford, MA, who he married on May 27th, 1984, and spent 38 years together with; his sons Benjamin of New Bedford, MA and Nick of Georgia; his daughter Nichole of New Bedford, MA; and his grandchildren Katerina, Liam, Jonathan, and Lillian. Nick also had many sisters and in-laws: Marcella (Richard) Towns, Victoria (Kenneth) Gullicksen, Stephanie Anderson, and Alexandra (Daniel) Goenner. He also had many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members who all loved him. He was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Boyd, she is survived by her husband Bruce Boyd. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa and his ex-wife, Lillian, even though they were divorced she was still as family to him. He will be missed tremendously by all, who have vast memories to cherish and everlasting stories to share. A celebration of Nicholas’ life will be held during the summer in Massachusetts, organized by his family. Arrangements by the Donaghy-New Day Funeral Home.

John Eric Fields - Unknown - May 08, 2022

Departed: 05/08/2022 (New Bedford)
Obituary Preview: John Eric Fields was born on June 16, 1986 Craven County, North Carolina. He died unexpectedly this past Sunday, May 8th 2022at the age of 35 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Eric went by John with his friends, but family called him Eric. That is how I will refer to him here.
Eric never met a stranger. He had the extraordinary gift of making friendships everywhere he went.  He had a beautiful smile and personality that attracted people to him like a moth to a flame. He loved fishing and being outdoors. He worked very hard and helped his family in every way that he could. He loved his family and his friends and would do anything for them, even if it meant he would have to go without. He had a soul of innocence, love and freedom. Eric was a wonderful uncle to Aidyn Hibbett, Ryleigh Hibbett and Theo Phillips. He was the beloved son of Sherry Fields and wonderful brother to Erica Fields and Lauren Hibbett. He will forever be missed and the times that we had with him will be cherished. They were not long enough and he was taken from us too soon.
Eric never finished high school which he regretted. He struggled with learning disabilities throughout his childhood. However, he was extremely intelligent in other ways. He made up for his shortcomings by always staying positive and trying to cheer people up around him. He definitely knew how to make the best out of any bad situation and he knew how to have fun. He used his abilities to work at different careers throughout his life such as tree services, landscaping, cooking and janitorial work. He was also a natural born salesman.
Eric traveled a lot in his life. He never could stay put in one place for too long. He loved to get the most out of life. He traveled around the southern United States. He worked throughout Florida, Texas, South Carolina and other states. He also lived and worked in North Carolina most of his life and more recently he lived and worked in Massachusetts.
He is survived and missed by his mother, Sherry Fields and sisters Erica Fields and Lauren Hibbett. His grandmother Hilda Smith. His Aunt Elaine Rose and Uncle Bill Rose. His cousins, niece and nephews.  He will have a celebration of life memorial service this Friday, May 13th at Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County St. New Bedford. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the deceased person's family members or close friends. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for those who knew the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You may need to email or fax the obituary text and photo(s) to the designated contact person or use an online submission form.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

How long after a person's passing should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary can vary depending on cultural traditions and personal preferences. Typically, it's published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I publish an obituary online only?
