He is survived by his beloved wife, Tricia Shelton, devoted daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Michael Piller (Texas); by his sister-in-law Ursula Shelton, niece Tina Shelton and husband Christopher, nephew David and wife Anna Shelton, and great nieces Oliva and Fiona Shelton (all from Germany); by his mother-in-law Audrey Jhingree and sister-in-law Janet Manners (both from Lynchburg); nephew Israel Manners (Sweden) and great nephew Brayden Manners, niece Ruby Manners (Lynchburg); and by his sister and brother-in-law Joan and Edgar Morales (New York), Brother-in-law Ciron Jhingree and Natalie LaMothe (Pennsylvania); as well as by a large, loving, extended family from New York, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Canada, and Guyana.
He was preceded in death by his father Christian C. Shelton, mother Sarah H. Shelton, dear brother John R. Shelton and sister Lillie Shelton, Uncle David Raymond Shelton, and late wife Jane H. Shelton.
James, known as “Jim,” to family and friends, was born on June 5th, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Salisbury. He graduated in 1963 from Wicomico High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and a Merit Scholar, a Junior Varsity Football player, Drama Club actor, Challenge Team member, and the Literary editor for the school newspaper. The friends he made during these years have remained some of his closest throughout his life.
He was an active member of Faith Alliance Church for 30 years where he also served as Treasurer and as an Elder. His biggest priorities were his faith, family, church, and closest friends, but he was most well-known for his big heart and immensely generous spirit towards anyone fortunate enough to come into his life.
He was also affectionately known for his love of good jokes, especially for telling them, often erupting into a fit of laughter before even getting to the punchline. He also had a passion for classic cars, most notably his '57 Chevy Bel Air, and enjoyed reading comic strips, such as Pickles, and Pearls before Swine, as well as reminiscing about his childhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. However, the thing he loved most was spending time with loved ones, especially his wife, Tricia.
After High School, he furthered his education at the University of Maryland (BS), Virginia Tech (MAcc), and Virginia Commonwealth University (Ph.D.). After working as a CPA for Arthur Anderson, he made the leap into the world of academia, becoming a Professor of Accounting for over 40 years, with more than 20 of those years spent at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. It was during his time at Liberty where he received the first ever Modern-Day Hero Award. He was honored with this award in recognition of the many selfless years he devoted to caring for his first wife, Jane, following a stroke that left her unable to communicate or care for herself. At the time he received the award he said, “This award means more to me than all my academic awards combined.”
Despite his many academic, extracurricular, occupational, and personal accomplishments, he never boasted and always deflected attention to those around him. If you commented on his intelligence, he'd say "well you should have met my brother, he was the smart one." If you noted his tremendous love for his family, he'd tell you how blessed he was to be loved by them. If you admired his unwavering faith, he would happily share the ways in which God provided for him through the love and kindness of others, from strangers to friends.
Rest in peace, Jim. Your memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.

Neal Nelson Viar - April 16, 1938 - January 14, 2024

Departed: 01/14/2024 (Lynchburg)
Obituary Preview: Captain Neal Nelson Viar, 85, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2024.
Neal was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on April 16, 1938. He was the oldest child of the late Earl Rudolph and Ruth Gilliam Viar, Lynchburg Foundry Plant Manager and a mother who taught at Brookville High School. From a very early age, he had a passion and drive for hard work and entrepreneurship. Growing up, he had various jobs and activities including working on the foundry assembly line, gardening with his grandfather, and helping his mom while his dad worked 7 days a week. This was the precipice of developing his outstanding work ethic that he instilled in his family.
Neal graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1956 and left Lynchburg for Blacksburg where he attended what was then known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute. While at VPI, Neal joined the Air Force ROTC. During his time at VPI, he was a member of the Arnold Air Society, the Pershing Rifle, Scabbard and Blade, the American Nuclear Society, Physics Club, Honor Court, and Corp of Cadets. While attending, he also worked at the mess hall and as a butcher in the slaughterhouse. Always one with a curious mind and great intellect, Neal majored in Physics and graduated in 1960. He was proud to be a Hokie.
After graduation from Tech, Neal joined the United States Air Force full-time. There, he was a Communications Officer assigned to duties involving supervision of the implementation, operation and maintenance of Base Communications Centers. This included teletype, cryptographic, data, radio and wire communications. In February 1962, Neal married Ruby after meeting at a wedding where Neal was a groomsman and Ruby was the organist. Neal fondly recalled their meeting and courtship, saying they “fell in love very fast.” After getting married, they enjoyed the life of a military family. His time in the Air Force led to moves all over, from Long Island, New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico. His final rank was Captain.
After his time in the Air Force, Neal and Ruby moved to West Lafayette, Indiana where he attended Purdue University and graduated with his MBA in Industrial Administration in 1966. Upon graduation, Neal set off on a life of entrepreneurship that took him from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, ultimately settling back home in Lynchburg in 1977.
Upon returning to Lynchburg to be near family, he became a proud self-starter, always trusting God and taking a leap of faith in every venture. Some of his greatest professional successes were establishing companies such as Burns and Wray, Key-Tech, Inc., and Mid-State Construction, where his wife Ruby worked alongside him. Neal was always learning and needed to use his mind, so he also spent some time as a tax preparer, real estate broker, and tutor for Bedford County Homebound Students in middle and high school, which he loved.
Since moving to Lynchburg, he and his family began attending Timberlake United Methodist Church. Neal was an active member of the church, being part of the PPR Committee, holding the position of trustee, ushering, and regularly attending services and special events. Ruby was the church organist for over 30 years at Timberlake. Neal could always be found as the last one sitting in the same pew in the sanctuary, listening to Ruby play the postlude on the organ. He was her biggest fan and wouldn’t move until the last note was played.
After losing his soulmate, Ruby, after 55 years, he semi-retired. You could find Neal eating breakfast at Koffee Kup or on the golf course with friends. Neal’s passion over all else was family though. He loved nothing more than offering his wisdom and advice to his children and grandchildren... “Take the road less traveled”; “The only failures in life are not trying at all”; “Adversity builds character”; and “Worry is the opposite of faith”…were all some of his mantras. He was the biggest motivator to his grandchildren with support, love, and guidance. He rarely missed an opportunity to show them how much he loved them by being present in daily life.
Neal, or “Bubba” if you’re his grandchild, is survived by his four children of whom he loved so very much: Randy (Marion) of Buford, Georgia; Cris (Gina) of Lynchburg; Jennifer Reynolds of Lynchburg; and Jodi (Vince) of Lynchburg; fourteen grandchildren: Savannah, Jessica (John), Neal, Abigail, Josh (Sierrah), Morgan (Kassidy), David (Abbie), Madison (Trey), Becca, Riley, Michael, Arden, Lila and Charlotte; two great-grandchildren: Walker and Sutton; his two siblings, Elizabeth Moore (David) of Richmond and Doug (Val) of Lynchburg, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, loved ones and friends.
The memorial service will be at Timberlake Church Thursday, January 18 at 6 pm including a gathering in the Family Life Center immediately following the service.

Katherine Evelyn Wood - February 11, 1931 - December 12, 2023

Departed: 12/12/2023 (Lynchburg)
Obituary Preview: Katherine Evelyn Taliaferro Wood, of Lynchburg, after fighting in a multi-decades long war with cancer, and having been the victor in three separate battles, passed away peacefully in her sleep while at home with siblings on December 12, 2023.
Katherine E. Taliaferro was born in Lynchburg on February 11, 1931, to Griselda and Gabriel E. Taliaferro. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Morelli (Domenic) of Magnolia, Delaware, and by grandson George Ford of Secaucus, N.J.; and by two loving sisters, Lydia G. Taliaferro, and Marjorie Jean Taliaferro, both of Lynchburg; and one loving brother, Clayton Taliaferro, Lynchburg, and New York City.
Katherine Taliaferro Wood was pre-deceased by her husband, Harry Wood and by beloved sister, Barbara J. Taliaferro, and five beloved brothers: Donald (Evelyn), Gabriel (Clara, Jacqueline), Marvin (Elizabeth), Waverly (Millie), Dexter (Adele) Taliaferro; and two nephews, Linwood Taliaferro (Sounjanette) Raleigh, NC; Richard Taliaferro, Atlanta, Ga. Also, left to mourn are a nephew, Marvin E. Taliaferro (Lorraine) Pittsburgh, Pa.; a devoted cousin L. H. Franklin (Carolyn) Lynchburg; and grandnephews, grandnieces, and a host of loving friends.
Katherine Taliaferro, or “Red,” as she was called by her father because of her hair color, matriculated in the Lynchburg City School System and graduated in the class of 1948 from the revered Dunbar High School. At an early age, she joined the Rivermont Baptist Church and was baptized by church pastor, W. M. Brown.
Following Katherine’s high-school graduation, she relocated to New York City to further her formal higher educational process where both opportunity and choices for such were more plentiful for her there than here in her birthplace, and indeed throughout the more segregated southern region of our country. While living, studying, and working in New York, she was employed by the New York Telephone Company starting as a Commercial Representative and very shortly thereafter was given the title of Office Manager. She retired as a Rate Engineer in the Pricing Administration Department where her duties included: analyzing costs and revenues; developing rates; rate case documentation and testimony involving exchange services; competitive/financial analysis; and associated lines of business activities.
Having left Lynchburg when she did, Katherine felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to enter and work in the New York City corporate world of the 1950s -70s which was a world in which she, female, was able to compete, succeed, and advance to a “glass-ceiling” level that she was a part of in the forefront of helping to create its ensuing entry cracks. That would have been impossible to achieve in Lynchburg during those, and even successive years. A natural born and brilliant portraitist, the myriad mind of Katherine, with its panoply of interests, included reading, antiquing, piano playing, fashion design and structuring, gardening, travel, backgammon, and cooking—especially gourmet cooking. There was nothing more satisfying to her than preparing for elegant dining and having guests derive pleasure from the taste of good, home-cooked food. The giant cornucopia full of pleasureful, recreational and cultural event offerings that were so much a part of Katherine’s day-to-day life while in the city was the great part of living in New York that she most missed on departing, but later made up for in frequent visits back to the ‘big city.’
Lured back to Lynchburg by her heart-felt native attraction to her much beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, red earth and overall natural lushness offered here by Mother Nature, she met Harry Wood, a retired businessman from Lexington, Virginia. They subsequently married in November 1994.
Maintaining a positive and cheerful attitude and knowing that the most important part of life is in the moment, was part of Katherine’s creed. Her authenticity was what helped her to keep realizing that that moment was the beginning of the rest of her life. Hope kept her aloft and continued to do so throughout her long and full of love life; her spiritual belief, focused awareness, and genuine kindness to all, being at the helm.
