Obituary Preview: Catherine (Cass) E. Lombardo, a 52 year resident of Millersville, MD, passed away at the age of 91, in the early morning of December 2, 2022.

She was born in Baltimore, MD, where she graduated from Eastern High School in 1950, and at then the age of 19 became a military spouse. For over twenty years she traveled and lived across the United States as well as abroad. Cass was a former employee of Montgomery Ward in Glen Burnie, Drug Fair in Sun Valley, and later retired after 19 years of employment in the pharmacy section of Giant Food in Glen Burnie, MD. She was also a longtime faithful member of the Glen Burnie Baptist Church in Glen Burnie, where she belonged to the Silver Sages, taught at the Wee School Daycare, and served on the Hospitality Committee.

Cass is preceded in death by her six siblings and a granddaughter. She is survived by her three daughters: Janette Thompson, Tina Miles and Valerie Ballard, and her two sons: Anthony and Jon Lombardo; as well as her 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She will be sorely missed by her loved ones and friends.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 10, at three o’clock in the afternoon, at the Glen Burnie Baptist Church, Glen Burnie, MD, where she was a long-time faithful church member. The service will be immediately followed by a fellowship in the church reception hall.

Cass’ ashes will be interred at the Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD, at a later date for immediate family to attend.

Barbara Marion Yates Greenwell - May 08, 1928 - November 25, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mom was called home today. She was number 5 of 15 children, proudly born in Maryland in a family of mostly native Washingtonians. Growing up in SE DC in the 1930s was an adventure for those Yates kids.

In 1950 she gained a husband and a new religion, she kept the religion. Her Catholic faith and a most amazing sense of humor helped her raise 7 children, who laughingly inherited that sense of humor. She never lost her sense of wonder be it mechanical toys that sang or slot machines that paid out money. She was a big fan of slots like most of her siblings, playing in casinos from Maryland to Massachusetts.

Loved the Redskins but she was occasionally known to go over to that “purple” team, “I was born in Maryland”, was the excuse she gave. She was quite proud of her arrest for disruption of Congress during a Medicare rally downtown, giving us each a copy of the police report. She couldn’t dance, much to the ex-husband’s dismay, but she sure could sing, which she did every Sunday in the St. Bernadine’s choir.

Mom taught us to be kind, to love each other and to get along with each other. We are so blessed that she was on earth for 94 years.

Tiara attended First Asheville Baptist Church at an early age, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior later in life, and eventually became a member of Oak Shade Baptist Church in Catlett, VA.

Tiara received her early education attending Manassas Park elementary and middle schools, and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, Manassas, in 1993. She continued her education studying Culinary Arts in Virginia Beach and most recently was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business at the University of Phoenix. She worked many years as a Food Service Manager for Burger King, Manassas, VA.

Tiara was a child at heart and her sense of humor, outgoing personality and creative storytelling won her many friends of all ages over the years. Her hobbies were knitting, reading, watching scary movies, and writing stories and plays.

She enjoyed spending quality time hosting family gatherings with Gilbert, her long time devoted companion of over 20 years, doing the cooking and Tiara making her delicious pound cake. She loved her boys spending time with them playing games, watching movies and visiting the park.

She was preceded in death by Gilbert M. Smith, Jr., son and Ronald Belt, father. She leaves to cherish her memory Markishia Smith, daughter, Marcus Smith, son, Mathias Smith, son, Malachi Smith, son, Virginia Jordan, mother, Gina Fudd, sister, Airron Ble, sister(Olivier Ble), Gilbert Smith, and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins, friends and one niece.

Michael Walter Waclawski - August 15, 1972 - November 02, 2022

Obituary Preview: Michael "Mike" W. Waclawski passed away peacefully at his home in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday November 2nd, 2022 at the age of 50. Mike was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung Cancer in April 2022, and by mid summer the cancer had spread throughout his body. He fought a valiant fight. He is survived by his parents, David and Helga Waclawski. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sven Waclawski.

Mike was brought up in a military family and lived in several States as well as in Germany. He graduated from the General H. H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, Germany. He thoroughly enjoyed living in Germany where he played soccer with other American and German youth. He also enjoyed bowling and playing tennis. While living in Germany he learned to speak the German language. He especially enjoyed German cooking and was skilled in preparing German meals.

Mike was known for his beaming smile, incredible sense of humor, love of electronics (especially surround sound), and admiration of all things German engineered, especially BMWs. He loved music, and of course, the color blue.

Mike was always interested in computers as a youth and later in life he worked in Information Technology at the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC which he was very proud of, until his retirement several years ago.

Mike always gave of himself to those who meant the most to him. His life touched many, and he will be missed dearly by those who knew him.

There will not be a memorial service; instead you are encouraged to donate to your favorite charity, in memory of Mike.

Obituary Preview: Shirley Ann (Wadsworth) Pelzel, 90, of Reston, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, in Reston Hospital. She was born on November 24, 1931, the daughter of Basil and Marion Wadsworth, and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. Whether as a player in a neighborhood pick-up baseball game or as a member of her South Hills High School women’s softball, basketball, and volleyball teams, Shirl (also affectionately known as Shrilly) was an avid athlete and overall sports enthusiast. She never stopped being a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers even after moving to Northern Virginia, where she also rooted for the Washington baseball, football, and hockey teams.

Shirl graduated valedictorian in 1948 from South Hills High School in Pittsburgh. Shortly thereafter, she started her career as a secretary at West Penn Power. Well-liked, enthusiastic, and organized, Shirl continued to advance professionally as an executive secretary. She married in 1951, transferred to Baltimore and then to Lima, OH, where she had her two daughters, Sue and Jan. Shirl supported and encouraged her daughters in all their activities, never missing a dance recital, softball game, swim meet, award presentation, or graduation ceremony. Once her daughters were school age, and following a 1967 transfer to Springfield, VA, Shirl began an almost 20-year stint as office manager for Northern Virginia Gynecologists in Fairfax, VA. By the time she retired in 2002 at age 70, Shirl was head staff member to the GM at Raytheon in Falls Church, VA.

Shirl’s professional successes were many, but what she spoke of often and truly treasured were the lasting friendships she made during her life. Friends knew Shirl for her hard work, charitable giving, caregiving nature, volunteer spirit, and love of animals, especially her “granddogs.” Friends within earshot also knew that Shirl loved to sing and had a lovely soprano singing voice that never left her.

Often referred to as “fun” Aunt Shirl, she enjoyed an especially close relationship with her nieces and nephews: Georgie, Michael, Marion, and Phil. She cherished her role in their lives and loved being someone in which they could confide. To her great nephews and nieces, Shirl was known simply as “Great,” the nickname for their Great Aunt Shirl, which she loved.

Shirl was preceded in death by her sisters, Vivian English and Bette Metz, and her beloved niece, Lesley Metz, and nephew-in-law, Chuck Harding. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Pelzel (Bill de las Casas) of Chicago, IL, and Janet Pelzel (Doug Toppin) of Ashburn, VA.

Jose Anibal Negron Jr. - October 26, 1953 - September 29, 2022

Obituary Preview: Col. Jose A. Negron, Jr., USAF, Ret., born October 26, 1953, died peacefully in his home at the age of 68 on September 29, 2022, following a two year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jose loved his children, grandchildren, extended family, employees, and many friends. He is survived by his two children and their spouses Joseph (Heather) Negron and Alisa (Christopher) Jones and by his beloved grandchildren: Elisabeth, Tori Jane, Olivia, Amelia, Luke, and Noah. He was affectionately known to them as Pops and Grandpops. Jose has three surviving brothers and their spouses:  Edwin (Lori), Jorge (Nancy), and Eric (Monica) Negron. His loss is also mourned by his girlfriend Kate Amann and her son Otto Rebane.  He was proceeded in death by his loving parents Jose Sr. and Nelcy Negron of Leesville, Louisiana.

Jose spent his early childhood in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father ended his military assignments in Fort Polk, Louisiana, where the family settled. Jose graduated from Leesville High School and Louisiana Tech before beginning his military career as a B-52 Radar Navigator. While assigned to EUCOM Headquarters, Jose led the development of the US component of NATO’s original Quick Reaction Force. Upon outbreak of the Somali Civil War, Jose was charged with supporting the United Nations as a key member of Operation Provide Relief and given the responsibility and authority of organizing and controlling oversight and scheduling of all relief flights to and from Somalia. He also directed humanitarian airlifts out of Sarajevo and Rwanda, saving lives during the 1994 and 1995 genocide crises. Jose also survived the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, having been present at the portion struck several minutes before the attack. Jose was the Program Manager of the first Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge. The program was to spur American ingenuity to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle technologies that could be applied to military requirements.

Jose would often explain to loved ones how the principles he gained from the USAF contributed to his success as an entrepreneur. Upon his retirement, Jose took on the challenge of establishing and running a small business. He was the founder, President & CEO of AVANTI Technologies, Inc., focused on technical support, education, advertising & marketing. Jose worked to help save lives and heal those with wounds and ailments.  Whether visiting the Wounded Warriors Burn Unit or supplying oxygen related wound care treatments, Jose applied his skills providing medical equipment around the world to serve those in need.

Jose A. Negron, Jr., loved life and was an incredible visionary. He was full of energy and ideas and was always looking to help and bless others. Jose was one of the most generous people that you could have ever met. He considered the blessings he received as reason enough to help others get established in their lives and careers.  He was warm and generous toward anyone who took time to listen, often having the loudest voice and laugh in the room. He loved hosting dinners and celebrating momentous occasions with family, friends, and co-workers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life service will be held October 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) at Reston Bible Church, 45650 Oakbrook Ct., Sterling, VA 20166.

He is survived by his mother Anna Beard of Burke VA and his beloved sister Amber Beard of Burke VA. In addition to his mother and sister, Jonathan has left behind his beautiful and loving companion Emily Natsios, his uncles Chris Byrne, Tim Griffin, Jeffry Joseph and Tom Beard: Aunts Caryl Byrne, Cheryl Beard and Wendy Taylor along with many cousins, family members, cherished friends too numerous to list and last but not least - his faithful and fierce dog Artemis.

Jonathan had a kind and caring soul with a rare smile that charmed many and had a way of making everyone he met feel special and loved. He was an honorable and noble man with a very quiet and gentle spirit yet fierce in his generosity and compassion. Loyal to his friends and family to the end --protecting them from sadness and pain as long as he could. Although he has left us too soon with many hearts broken, he would want us to remember him fondly with a smile and not tears. We will all see him again and he will live on in the hearts and lives that he has touched. Honor him by treating others with patience, forgiveness and kindness.

Obituary Preview: Michael Evan, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 28, 2022, at the age of 93.

Born in Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, Mike was the son of the late Michael and Anna Evan. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Evan, and his younger brother Joe Evan.

Immediately after high school, Mike left home to serve his Country in the United States Navy. After the military, Mike relocated to Northern Virginia and began his career in the Central Intelligence Agency where he met the love of his life, Mary. His decision to marry her was swift and sure, and many will attest to it being one of (if not the) best decisions of his life. If you knew Mike, you also knew Mary was not far away. They were the perfect team. He continued to serve his community as an Usher at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church for over 50 years. The only thing Mike loved more than the Redskins, a good joke, or even Mary’s cooking, was spending time with his beautiful family.

Mike is survived by his 5 children, Frances Hinkle, Anna Miller (Bill), Theresa Clements (Ray), Linda Geary (Don), and Michael Evan (Kim). His 13 grandchildren, Steven Evan, Christopher Clements (Faye), Tara Clements, Donnie Geary (Laura), Monica Geary, Valerie Clements, Amanda Looper (Brandon), Derek Geary (Bianca), Michelle Geary, Haley Miller, Michael Evan, Nicholas Evan, and Andrew Evan. His 10 great-grandchildren, Thomas and George Evan, Everett, Weldon, Sellers and Rebecca Jean Geary, Brayden and Grayson Geary, Amelia Looper, and Arla Clements. He is also survived by his brother Ted Evan (Marilyn). We love you Mike, Dad, and Poppi!

Obituary Preview: William James Murphy, “Billy” to family and “Murph” to friends, passed away of heart disease at home on Sunday September 25, 2022.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on October 27 at 11:00 AM at St John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston VA, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bill was born the youngest of four children on March 25, 1953, in Euclid Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. He attended Holy Cross Grade School and St Joseph High School, graduating in 1971. Bill worked for Pressure Casting before joining the Pat Joyce’s Tavern, Inc. team where he met his future wife, Nancy. They married and settled in Reston Virginia then had two children, Bobby and Caroline, and adopted several rescue dogs over the years. In Reston, Bill joined the Carpenters Union and worked for Andrews Bartlett on trade shows for several years before volunteering with the Red Cross to help with recovery efforts in Louisiana after Katrina. When he returned, he co-managed the Reston Ice Skating Rink, while volunteering as a driver for the annual PGA DC Tournament, and as a starter at the Reston National Golf Course, where he lived on the 18th Fairway for 35 years. After retirement, Bill worked as a Groundskeeper at Reston National until his death. Bill was an avid golfer and had a biting sense of humor that charmed all who met him. He loved early mornings on the golf course, the smell of the grass as he mowed, and watching the sun rise.

Bill is survived by his children, Robert Edward Murphy and Caroline Rose Murphy Durbin (Charles), his life partner Nancy Mosier-Murphy, brother Daniel Murphy (Jeanne), and sister Kathryn Murphy Simmons. Nieces and nephews Eileen Simmons, Daniel Murphy Jr. (Karen), Kelly Delaney (Tim), Brian Murphy (Kirby), and Robert Simmons (Edie). Grand nieces and nephews, Sean, Ryan, Max, Sam, Olivia, and Ella Kathryn. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Edward Murphy Jr. and his parents Jean Margaret Neely Murphy and Robert Edward Murphy Sr.

Charlotte was an independent, self-made woman in an era of women’s liberation. She was born in Memphis, Texas on November 11, 1936 to Chrystal Arlene and Lesley Harrell Calhoun. A military family, they moved often and were stationed as far away as Otsu, Japan and Fairbanks, Alaska. In Fairbanks she married her first husband Tom Slaney at age 18; together they crossed the country multiple times including California, Texas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia as he played trumpet during the Big Band Jazz era and piloted commercial aircraft. They raised three children—Deborah Christine, Kara Lynn, and James Jay—in Springfield, Virginia. By the 1970s Charlotte had completed business school, becoming a leading mortgage loan underwriter, processor and originator in northern Virginia and raising her children on her own.

Charlotte later married banker James R. Lewis in 1983, sharing a home and life with her husband in Springfield and Leesburg, Virginia for 39 years. Charlotte was a loving, happy, and nurturing “Grammie” to her granddaughters Chrystal and Selina, and to her great-grandchildren Emily, Timmy and Luke. She loved gourmet cooking, decoupage, sewing mid-century fashions, and disco dancing in the 1960s and 70s. She loved Yorkie terriers, dinner parties with her Virginia and Florida friends, weekends in Ocean City, summers in Saratoga Springs, New York and Sebastian, Florida, and autumn in Arizona and New Mexico with her family. Her travels took her to China, England, France, Italy, Spain, Holland, Denmark, and Switzerland. Extra special time was spent in Texas, where she visited extended relatives and the ranch and homesteads of her Calhoun and Howard ancestors. In addition to her treasured family time, Charlotte also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Dodona Manor, and the Women’s Club of Leesburg.

Charlotte is survived by her husband James, children Deborah Slaney and husband James Iwerks, Kara Gentile and husband Arnie Gentile, James Slaney, grandchildren Chrystal Slaney, Selina Brooks and husband Timothy Brooks, great-grandchildren Emily Amaya, Timothy Brooks and Luke Brooks, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, and her beloved poodle, Prince. We will never forget her home-made Thanksgiving dinners, popovers, biscotti, eggs benedict, kitty cat pancakes, over-the-top Christmas celebrations, and the many ways she showed her love to us all. Jim Palumbo, age 81, passed away at VHC Health in Arlington, Virginia, on September 22 after a long struggle with dementia. Jim was born in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, in 1941 to Joseph Palumbo and the former Verna Polcha.

The family moved to Maryland when Jim was a teenager. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1958 and joined the Navy, serving as an avionics technician from 1959 to 1962. Shortly before discharge he married Phyllis May. For 10 years, Jim worked while studying electrical engineering at night at Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 1974, while Phyllis made a home for their growing family and became a gourmet cook.

Jim’s career path led to IBM and then to Lockheed Martin. He worked on Navy contracts, notably the P-3 Orion anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft. He became an avid tennis player, and he and Phyllis entertained joyously and often.

Jim enjoyed doing auto repair and home improvement projects, assembling an impressive basement workshop. He was known as affable and sociable, often rewriting the lyrics of famous songs for parties and videos. He impersonated Elvis Presley for Phyllis’s 60th birthday.

Phyllis passed away in 2005 after almost 44 years of marriage. In time Jim took up ballroom and Latin dancing and especially enjoyed rumba. He was also predeceased by brother Joseph Palumbo and sisters Marie Wendt and Gloria Holland.

Jim is survived by sons James J. Palumbo (Maria) of Oakton, Virginia, and Jeffrey M. Palumbo (Kim) of Winchester, Virginia, daughters Julie Villa (Chris) of Virginia Beach and Jennifer Dotson (Joe) of Middletown, Virginia, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and companion Carole Steele of Centreville, Virginia. The family requests that any memorial gifts be directed to The Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity. A memorial service will be held on October 29, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Unity of Fairfax located at 2854 Hunter Mill Road

Alice was born in Amherst County, Va. She moved to the Northern Virginia area as a young mother and wife. Her early work career was in a number of retail establishments. Her later work career was comprised of various office positions that included a condominium management office, several real estate companies, and similar occupational positions.

When her children and grandchildren were younger, she enjoyed taking them to beaches in the summer, mostly to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. She loved to take her grandchildren to the Kennedy Center and the National Theater to see plays; take them to Embassy events that were open to the public; take them to lunch or dinner in nice restaurants; and other venues that she thought they should be exposed to at an early age. She also enjoyed Saturday excursions with her grown daughter, where they would visit quaint little towns in Virginia and Maryland. When at home, she enjoyed nothing more than tending to outdoor plants and flowers on her condo balcony. She often received comments on how beautiful her flowers always were.

Alice is survived by her three children Thomas Ponton of Ocean City, MD, Donald Ponton of Hedgesville, WV, and Mary Fisher of Angier, NC; her sister Anne Baldwin of Piney River, VA; four grandchildren Kristi Lowery, Jennifer DelFavero, Shannon Noe, and Richard Fisher; ten great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Alice is predeceased by son Michael Ponton, sister Evelyn Webb, and grandson Christopher Fisher.

Obituary Preview: Benjamin Cleveland Zollman, 84, of Warrenton, VA, passed away early the morning of September 15, 2022 at Legacy Ridge memory care home in Gainesville. He fought an arduous battle against Alzheimer's, and died peacefully in his sleep.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on September 24 at 1:00 pm at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton, VA, followed by a celebration of life reception. Burial will be at a later date. Ben was born on February 19, 1938 in Washington, DC to Virginia and James Zollman. He graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1957. He then enlisted and spent two years in the Marines, traveling with the American Land Forces-Middle East to Lebanon, on what he jokingly called his "Mediterranean cruise."

After his military service, Ben worked at Safeway on McArthur Boulevard where a chance encounter with a customer led to his eventual career as a cartographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Never one to sit still, he earned his BS at the University of Maryland while also climbing the ranks at NOAA to become chief of the enroute navigation branch. Throughout his nearly 40 years at NOAA, Ben also worked steadily in his side job as a carpenter, doing renovations, building furniture, and even building his family a second home in Ladysmith, VA. After retiring in 1997, he continued working in his construction business until health concerns slowed him down. Ben & his wife were also very involved with St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish when they lived in Colonial Beach.

Ben is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth (Betti), of Warrenton. His loving family also includes his daughter, Sarah Smarrelli, and her husband Dave, also of Warrenton, and his son James Zollman, and his wife Selma, who reside in Boca Raton, Florida. Ben's grandchildren are Anthony (Warrenton) and Lindsy Smarrelli (Westminster, CO), and Ben Zollman (Boca Raton).

Charles Franklin Dietzel - April 14, 1928 - September 10, 2022

He was Born April 14, 1928 in Jamestown Missouri, to Clarence Chester Dietzel and Florence Katherine Nickles. His Dietzel siblings were Ralph, Eleanor, Russell, Marley, Jean, and Will. He and his wife Velma Dorine Bunch’s children are Kathy, Ray, Randy, Chuck, and Jim.

Charles had many dear friends, and he enjoyed playing poker with many of them at the monthly game (aka Bible School). He had a passion for playing his harmonica for all his friends and family. He also played in public at doctor’s appointments and restaurants. For several years, he and Dorine were a show every evening at Chick-fil-A, where they played for the children, customers, and staff. He loved joking around and telling humorous stories about himself, and stories of others. But most of all, he was one of those people that would always drop what he was doing to lend a helping hand when needed.

The day Charles was born was a record-breaking low of 27 degrees in Jamestown, Missouri. He was one of seven children. After noticing Charles’ kicking feet the day he was born, the doctor told his father, “He’s going to be a go-getter!”. On December 25th, when Charles was five years old, his favorite present was hanging on the Christmas tree: a knit stocking with an orange, a little bag of jellybeans, and a 25 cent harmonica. This was when he started playing harmonica. When asked what he wanted to be, Charles would reply, “I don’t know, but it’s got to be a job where I’m warm in the winter, cool in the summer, doesn’t take too much heavy lifting, and not a whole lot of smarts!”. He soon started playing with his Dad’s old watches, which back then, you could buy for 99 cents. When it broke, you would send it back for repair and it cost you 35 cents, with an additional nickel for postage. When the watch would again stop running, it was then given to Charles for his training as a watch repairman. He was a rambunctious child, but was quite popular with the church ladies. During church he would sit in the back pew, working on watches, using a pocket knife as a screwdriver. A kind neighbor gave Charles his first clock to repair. After a successful job, the other neighbors started to bring their clocks to help improve his skills. This is about the time that he knew that he wanted to work on time pieces for the rest of his life. At age 17, he opened up his first watch and clock repair business in his hometown of California, MO. He later moved on to expand his business in two other locations in the next couple of years, one of which was Eldon, where he met the love of his life, Dorine. Aside from watches, Charles was eager to get his driver's license. Back then, there was no written test, eye exam, or behind the wheel driving test. To his surprise, all he did was walk into the building, hand the clerk 25 cents, and walk out a proud man with a license! He did not have a car, but having a driver’s license was very prestigious! He attended trade school and earned the extremely difficult and coveted title and certification as a Master Horologist from the National Institute of Horology.

Charles and Dorine were married in Eldon at age 20. They moved to the Washington DC area not too long after that, where they remained for most of their lives raising their five children. After starting in a concession stand fixing time pieces in Alexandria Virginia at JC Penney’s in the early 50s, he struck out once again on his own and opened a shop across the street. He repaired timepieces in the Washington DC area for over 7 decades, and provided quality repair services for U.S. congressmen, senators, high ranking military officials, embassies, ambassadors, Monticello and the general public alike.

Those wishing to take a walk down memory lane can expand two of the pictures included, and read one of the many articles, including this one that was in the Alexandria Gazette newspaper from the late 1970’s. After 72 years of marriage, his wife, Dorine passed away on February 15, 2020 after celebrating their last Valentine’s Day together. Charles contracted Covid one month later, which caused his health to spiral down over the next 2 1/2 years. Both Charles and Dorine are now back together, In each other’s arms.

The celebration of both Charles and Dorine’s lives will be held in California, Missouri, where Charles and Dorine were married. The date of the service is Saturday, November 12, 2022 starting at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow. Attire is nice casual.

Germán passed on Wednesday August 31st, 2022, surrounded by his family at his Virginia home. He is survived by his Wife Dicciana of 10 years, his son Stephano, his father Germán, his mother Elizabeth, his grandmother Olga, and his sister Elizabeth Viviana.

Germán was always full of joy, loved salsa music, Peruvian food was his favorite, he was the kind of man who will give you a hand no matter what or where, amazing human being, father, son, brother, and husband; he was always surrounded by friends, who were more than family to him.

He was loved and will be missed by all who met him.

Obituary Preview: Dr. Leonard Cure Conate, 74, of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 24th, 2022 in Aldie, Virginia surrounded by his loving family (locally and all over the globe). Dr. Conate was born in Butuan City in the province of Agusan del Norte in the Philippines to Lope and Bonifacia Conate on September 17th, 1947. He was raised in a Roman Catholic faith and practiced it throughout his life. He attended the oldest university in the Philippines where he received his Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Santo Tomas. It was at this university 51 years ago where he met his college sweetheart, wife, and Nurse, Henrietta Conate. Together, they opened Sacred Heart Clinic in Noveleta and Cavite City (just outside of Manila) where they dedicated their lives to caring for the sick before they moved to America in 1985 with their two sons (and a baby on the way). Dr. Conate and his family eventually settled in Northern Virginia where they planted their roots and lived the American dream. Dr. Conate enjoyed playing tennis and basketball and he was a fan of boxing. He would often play tennis with his middle son and the doctors he worked with. His other passion was food and he enjoyed all types, especially seafood. He enjoyed cooking and experimenting with different flavors and loved sharing them with his family and friends. In his younger years, he was the lead singer and composer of his band and recorded an album or two (his family is on a mission of finding these albums). Dr. Conate is survived by his wife of 50 years, Henrietta Conate of Ashburn, Virginia; his eldest son, Hendrick Conate (his spouse, Jason Cox) of Ashburn, Virginia; his middle son, Dell Conate of Reston, Virginia; his youngest son, Jack Conate (his spouse, Kelly Siemion Conate) of Leesburg, Virginia; his grandchildren, Jackson Daniel Conate and Audre Teodora Conate of Leesburg, Virginia; his sisters, Maria Concepcion Conate Safar of Ashburn, Virginia, Neria Conate Hoyla of Seattle, Washington, Esmeralda Conate Reyes of Vancouver, Canada, Marlita Conate Bonachita of Manila, Philippines, Gloria Conate Ko of Bacoor, Philippines, Nida Rosario Conate of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Josefita Conate Vasquez of Los Banos, Philippines; his brothers, Andrew Conate of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Frederico Conate of Dharan, Saudi Arabia; and many wonderful nephews, nieces, and cousins scattered around the globe. He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Cathryn Harmon, his son Benjamin R. Wijeratne, and dog, Molly; his in-laws, Mary and Fred Harmon, Sandie and Mike Sims, Patricia and Alan Tillman; nephew Jacob Tillman; nieces Macie and Sydney Sims; and Sonali and Dilini Ranasoma. Ravine was an amazing father and husband. He loved planning and attending activities with his son including all things Star Wars or at one of the many museums he visited where he could immerse himself exploring history, art, or culture. Most of all, he adored his wife, Cathie, and celebrated her every day as his amazing life partner and best friend. For Ravine, his family meant everything. Ravine loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed travel, having been to over 26 countries with one of his most recent trips being to Portugal and Italy with Cathie and Benji. An avid foodie, Ravine loved to cook and cooked with love but also enjoyed trying new flavors at local restaurants. He loved people and was an interesting conversationalist. Ravine’s quick wit and sense of humor was one of his most adoring qualities. Ravine lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed. Ravine was a warrior throughout his illness, always maintaining hope. His family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers who provided Ravine with the best care. As an organ donation recipient, Ravine appreciated and understood the tremendous impact this precious gift gives those in need and as such, paid the gift of life forward and encourages others to do so. A memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Annandale on August 27, 2022 at 11am.

Jim was the brother of Sister Lauretta Linsalata IHM, Lynne Linsalata Wlodarczyk (Stan), Tish Linsalata DeCecco (Lou), Joe Linsalata (Vicky) and Joanne Linsalata Tadrzynski (Mark).

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, September 30, 2022, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 1 Fatima Dr, Secane, PA. Friends and relatives may call after 9:15 AM.

Burial will take place after Mass at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, 1600 S Sproul Road, Springfield, PA.

Obituary Preview: Jerrell "Jerry" Wilburn Birdwell died early morning on August 22, 2022.Jerry was the oldest child born in Nacogdoches, Texas on October 22, 1929, to Grace and Von Birdwell. His brother, Kyle, preceded him in death in 1988. Jerry was a mischievous school boy who once dyed his legs with black walnut to get out of wearing socks. As a young man, Jerry earned his degree in journalism and mathematics from Steven F. Austin College, and then served in the U.S. Air Force as an Interceptor Controller. Jerry's military career included a year in Morocco and earning a National Defense Service Medal. Upon returning to the States, Jerry was stationed at Foster Airbase in Victoria Texas and introduced to Elizabeth "Liz" Jean Brzozowske by a mutual friend. Soon after, Jerry had an opportunity and took a mailroom and copy boy job at the Los Angeles Times. This was his launching point for what would become a 46 year career as an executive in broadcast television. That first year in Los Angeles, Jerry could not get Liz out of his mind. He wrote to her for six months making his case for a successful marriage, encouraging her to make the big move from Texas and start a life together. Coming from two different religious backgrounds, there were many issues to sort through. Jerry persisted and love ultimately prevailed. Jerry and Liz were married for 64 years and raised four rambunctious children: Scott, Kent, Kim and Jan. They celebrated family time with fishing and camping adventures, many trips to Disneyland, building an elegant swimming pool in the backyard, and weekly movie nights. Jerry and Liz bought and built wonderful houses that were works of art and full of art. Jerry's television career took off when he landed a job at KTLA, one of many television stations owned by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. Jerry won several Emmy awards for his productions. He was responsible for putting Star Trek back on the air and producing a special showing of "The Managerie." Career opportunities took Jerry and Elizabeth to Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina, and Miami where he managed stations, mentored hundreds of employees, and was a ground-breaking programmer. After retiring from CBS Miami, Jerry and Liz moved back to the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, a place they truly loved. The built their final home overlooking the Blue Ridge Parkway. The retirement years in Asheville were busy with consulting work, photography projects, new fantastic friendships, local volunteer work and hosting family. Jerry was curious about everything mechanical and the natural world. He was color blind, but loved photography. If he came over to visit, likely it didn’t take him long to adjust your TV reception and repair anything that needed fixing. Jerry instilled freedom of thought in his children, and we are eternally grateful for that precious gift. Jerry once said he got his joy in life out of watching his children grow. He was a grandfather of six for whom he built forts and swing sets, made sure there was plenty of ice cream in the house, and couldn't wait to share a movie from his collection. He also said, “it’s not what you say that is important, it’s what you do.” Jerry lovingly cared for Liz until she passed on April 18, 2022. He lived a full and wonderful life for his 92.8 years and he passed on a wonderful life to his children and grandchildren.
