Born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Richard Fuhs and Lenore (Lents), Dave is survived by his wife Haydée (Lobatόn), his four children Jim (Karen) Fuhs, Bryan (Cathy) Fuhs, Greg (Karen) Fuhs, and Cindy (Chris) Sherman, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and stepbrother John Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Jr., stepfather Warren Morgan (Warren and Lenore married many years after Richard’s passing), and grandson Matthew Thomas Fuhs. Dave was also a beloved brother-in-law to Haydée’s nine siblings, and a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from high school in 1957 Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with honor and rising to the rank of quartermaster before his discharge in 1965. While stationed in Washington DC he met the love of his life, Haydée, and after they married in November 1965 he remained by her side for over 58 years, devoted to his wife and family in good times and in bad, for richer and for poorer, in health and in sickness, a model of dedication to them as well as his extended family, friends, and colleagues through countless acts of generosity, kindness, and selfless support over the decades.
After completing his tour of duty with the Navy, Dave settled into a successful civilian career as a machinist, honing his craft and gradually amassing an impressive tool collection through the 1980s while also completing his associate degree at Northern Virginia Community College in 1976. He eventually found his dream job at The Washington Post, where he proudly served from 1988 until his retirement in 2008, literally keeping the presses running for two decades at one of the world’s premiere newspapers and receiving numerous accolades for his efforts.
Outside of work, Dave was known for his love of fishing (especially in his younger years), cooking, chess, and most of the major sports. Along with coaching or otherwise supporting his kids’ and grandkids’ teams when they were growing up, he was an avid fan of the major Washington DC area professional sports teams, often organizing his schedule around watching Commanders, Nationals, Orioles, Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics games, and frequently providing updates on the latest scores and standings to anyone within earshot. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial services will include a Funeral Mass at St. Raymond of Peñafort Catholic Church in Springfield, VA on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. (with on-site celebration of life immediately following), and interment of Dave's ashes with military honors at Quantico National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at 11:30 a.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually around 100-200 words. Some online obituary platforms may have specific word count limits.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or by email, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and often personal anecdotes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a great way to celebrate a person's life and personality. Just be sure to keep the tone respectful and avoid offending any family members or friends.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online-only publications.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms specialize in hosting obituaries and allow you to create a digital tribute without publishing in a traditional newspaper.

How long will my online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep obituaries online permanently, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the newspaper or online platform where the obituary was published to request corrections. They may be able to make changes or issue a correction notice.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

You can request that the obituary not be published publicly or that certain details be withheld. However, keep in mind that this may limit the ability of friends and acquaintances to learn about the passing and offer condolences.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a good cause.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in hosting historical obituaries. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have resources to help you find old obituaries.

Can I reuse an existing obituary for another publication?

You may need to obtain permission from the original publisher or author before reusing an existing obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and regulations before reproducing someone else's work.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be a difficult task. Consider asking friends or family members for input or seeking guidance from a funeral home or bereavement counselor.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Just be sure to properly cite any copyrighted material.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about how much detail to share about sensitive topics like health issues or cause of death, consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor.
