Please keep the family in your prayers during this most difficult time. Obituary Wilma Elnora Burgess- Valentin was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 22,
2024, at Mt. Sinai Morningside Hospital in New York, New York. Wilma was born in Greeleyville, South Carolina on October 24, 1948, to the late William Raleigh and Emma Watson Burgess. She was baptized at an early age at Good Hope Baptist Church. She was the eighth of ten children. Four brothers and one sister preceded her in
death. She attended Williamsburg County Training School (WCT) and graduated in 1966. After graduating from high school, she went to New York City and was employed as an Executive Secretary for a major insurance company. While working for the insurance company she
furthered her education pursuing a college degree.
Wilma entered the New York Police Academy in December 1973 and became a Police Officer.
While serving as a police officer, she met and married the love of her life, Wilson Valentin. She then received her Bachelor of Science Degree (BS). After several years of service, she was injured and retired with the New York Police Department. After many years of marriage,
Wilson preceded her in death on February 23, 2024. She was a dedicated and faithful lifetime member of the National Council of Negro Women
(NCNW). She also served as a Vice President of that organization in New York. A longtime member of Abyssinia Baptist Church in Harlem, New York she served in many capacities under the direction of Pastor Calvin O. Butts. While in Columbia, South Carolina (her second home), she and her husband frequently attended Bethlehem Baptist Church under
the direction of Rev. Dr. Anthony A. McCallum. She is survived by her loving siblings, Freddie Burgess of Yonkers, NY, Mildred Burgess-Green of Bronx, NY, Gilbert Burgess of Coral Springs, FL, and Carolyn Burgess-Davis (Dubose) of Columbia, SC; her three children, Nina Valentin-Thomas (Christopher) and Cecilia Valentin both of Bronx, NY and Wilson Valentin, Jr. of New York, NY; her three grandchildren, Angelica Guifo, Lucien Thomas, and Lucas Thomas all of Bronx, NY; sisters-in-law, Daniela Valentin of Longwood, FL, Soledad Borrero of Titusville, FL, Olga Medina of Bronx, NY and Camelia Valentin of Orlando, FL, as well as nephews, nieces, other relatives and an entire village of
friends.

Carolina to the late Alonzer Rhodes and Mary Singletary Rhodes. Rhetta, as she was affectionately called, entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the Eastover Nursing Home Care Center in Charlotte, North
Carolina. She was educated in the public school system of Florence County and attended
South Florence High School. Rhetta loved worshipping & praising the Lord and attended New Ebenezer Baptist and Carver Street Baptist Churches. She also loved cooking, decorating
her home for the holidays, and most importantly spending time with her family.
She was loving, caring, giving to any and everyone in need. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings, Bennie
Rhodes, Lillian Rhodes, L.J. Baker and a niece, Ashia Jackson. Loved ones left to cherish her memories forever are her loving and devoted daughter Taketa “Taka” (Alex Woods) Rhodes of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Treyvis Rhodes and Alexa Woods both of Charlotte, NC; siblings, Donnie Rhodes Nathaniel Rhodes, Leila Mae Lawson, Sandra (Johnny) Green, Robert Rhodes, and Lonzer Rhodes all of Florence, SC; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,
other relatives, and dear friends.
Rhetta was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Mary Alice Youngblood Preston was born March 11, 1956. She was born in Timmonsville, SC and spent her childhood and young adult years in Winston-Salem, NC. At an early age she was baptized and received God as her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of Marion Christian Fellowship Church, Marion, SC. Mary attended school in Forsyth County in Winston-Salem, NC she was an academic scholar and athlete. Mary participated in sports such as tennis, volleyball, and basketball. Mary obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of North Carolina.
She relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and pursued a career in Engineering and acquired her Master of Engineering from DeVry University. As Mary was heading towards the peak of her career, she was forced to face one the toughest challenges of her life, Breast Cancer. Through Mary’s unwavering faith in God and the support of family and friends in 2023 she celebrated 30 years cancer free.
Mary was always willing to lend a helping hand and had open arms to many families and friends. Mary always greeted you with a lasting smile and filled the room with joy and laughter. Mary loved traveling abroad and across the United States was a true pillar of the community and will be missed by all who love and adore her.
She leaves to cherish her memory Natasha Youngblood of Nashville, TN as well as a son, Terry Youngblood of Chicago, IL, her brother Michael Grier, Atlanta, Ga, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and cherished friends.

Born on May 24, 1938, in Kingstree, South Carolina, to Creola Simpson and Walter Dimery,
Bobbie’s journey in life was marked by devotion, service, and the joys of human connection. Bobbie attended Sarah J. Hale Vocational High School, where she laid the foundations for her future. Her life took a turn filled with love and partnership when she met Walter Wilmer, a distinguished military man. Their union in 1957 was blessed with five children, forming a family that became the cornerstone of her world. She
went on to attend Rutgers University where she studied business administration. Her heart then led her to pursue a career in nursing, where she served with compassion and dedication in Camden, NJ at Cooper University Hospital and West Jersey Hospital, touching the lives of many as a
Certified Nurse’s Assistant. In 1973, Bobbie relocated from New Jersey to Maryland with her husband and children. Once there, she embarked upon a new chapter in her life. She began an administrative career with the Federal government, showcasing her resilience and adaptability at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and later the Federal Trade
Commission, from which she retired in 1994. Bobbie’s life was a testament to her deep and abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. An active member of Bethel AME Church in Camden, NJ, and later From the Heart Church Ministries (formerly, Full Gospel AME Zion Church) in Camp Springs, MD, she found solace and joy in church concerts and was a vital part of the helps and repast ministries. Bobbie’s passion for reading and her deep-seated care for working in
ministry were rivaled only by her love for being in the company of family, which remained her greatest joy. In 2018, Bobbie and Walter, Sr. made Florence, SC their home, joining the New Ebenezer Baptist Church under the teachings of Pastor Norman Gamble, further extending their cherished community of faith and
friendship. Bobbie leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and resilience, cherished by her beloved emotional support
companion, Pepper the poodle; her children, Cheryl Wilmer; Karen Lawson (Porter), Walter Wilmer, Jr. (Leslie), Gerri Wilmer, and Gwen Wilmer; her adored grandchildren, Nile V. Wilmer, Meagan K. Allen, Esq., Marion K. Allen, Jr., Dimery Alexis Mowery, Jeremy M. Dorsey; Candace and Ckye Penn, her treasured great-grandchildren, Mylo Lee Allen and Milani Jade Mjandana; her sisters, Jane Cosby, Tracey Simpson, Helen Dimery, Gloria Clarkson, and Bertha Cherry Dimery; her brothers Alvin Dimery (Regina) and Arthur Dimery, and her father’s beloved wife Mary Dimery along with a host of extended family and dear friends who all were influenced by her love and warmth. Marshall Tyrone Rainey was born November 1, 1952, in Florence, South Carolina. He was called to his heavenly home in the early morning of February 18, 2024. Marshall was lovingly known as Daddy, Papa, Rainey, T, Tyrone, Rain, and the Rain Man.
Marshall was the son of the late John and Lucille Rainey. Marshall graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1971 where he then went on to be a star basketball player at Morris College in Sumter, SC earning his Bachelor of Arts in History degree. Marshall then went on to pursue a dual diploma in Leadership Development at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Howard University in Washington, DC. Marshall attended the school of Graduate studies at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina pursuing a post-graduate degree in the Education Leadership program with the intent of attaining a Doctoral Degree in Education. Additionally, because of his interest in the human mind he went on to pursue a Master of Art in Counseling from Webster University, St. Louis, MO.
Through Marshall’s employment experiences he realized the importance of maintaining an active academic portfolio. As a result of this awareness, over the years he gained valuable work experiences as an Admission Counselor and Adjunct Professor at South Carolina State University and Morris College for over 30 years. Prior to this he served as a director and counselor for Upward Bound at Williamsburg Technical College. Marshall was bestowed the honor of 2009 National College Representative of the Year Award by the National Scholarship Services of Atlanta, GA. Before retirement in 2015 Marshall was the enrollment specialist at Paine College in Augusta, GA.
Marshalls personal affiliations, accolades and additional experiences were integral parts of his portfolio. A synopsis includes: Ordained Deacon, Majority Missionary Baptist Church; Carolina Association of College Registrar and Admissions Officers; Florence County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission; GAME ( Getting African Americans Educated), Atlanta, GA; Southeast Association of Admissions counselors; Amateur Softball Association; Dixie Youth Baseball Association; Morning Light Lodge- Prince Hall Mason; Speaking to aspiring college students during NBA (National Basketball Association) games in Memphis, Charlotte, Washington, DC and Atlanta. Guidance and Admission Assembly Council, College Board, Atlanta, GA. Chairperson for Paine Fest. Paine College Committee on Strategic Planning and Evaluation. Consultation for Capital Panaceas Consulting, Savannah, GA; South Carolina Youth Advocate Program. Post retirement and through his entire career Marshall was an advocate for Florence District One Schools and programs. In a speech he quoted a quote from the late Arnold Palmer “A town is not a place where you came from, but a town is who you are” where he went on to say, “you are looking at Florence One and proud of it”.
Marshall leaves to cherish his life and memories: one daughter, Marquil Rainey of Florence; one son, David Lunn of Florence; one granddaughter, Ryleigh Davis of Florence; longtime spouse, Quilla Williams of Florence and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
Marshall was a loving father and grandfather. He loved Marquil and Ryleigh more than anything in the world. He was a great friend, mentor, and a die-hard Giants fan. He was a joy to be around, always smiling, laughing, and telling jokes. Marshall will forever be missed and loved for his impact in the world was way greater than he even imagined.

Nathaniel Black, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Medical University of South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Nathaniel was born in Florence, South Carolina on November 15, 1939, the third of seven children born to the late Buddy and Laura Ann Black.
Nathaniel attended the public schools of Florence County. Later in life, he was employed with Tomlinson Howard Food Distributors as a truck driver until he retired. He also worked part time with Richland County Schools for many years.
Nathaniel loved his family dearly. He loved family moments, as well as his close friends in the community. His passion included playing golf and watching golf on television.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Mary Ann Black, and Shirley Black; three brothers, Rufus Black, Robert Lee Black, and George Black; two sisters, Barbara Jean Black, and Mattie Mae Black.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving sons, Nathan (Sheila) Goodman of Pamplico, South Carolina, Johnny (Ruby) Goodman, and Tony (Natasha) Black of Kingstree, South Carolina; three brothers, Lawrence Black, Jimmy Lee Black, and Ernest Black all of Florence, South Carolina. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Two special friends, Ruth Green who loved him like a brother and Bridget Adams, both of Columbia, South Carolina.

Girlene Mitchell Hilton, age 74, entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, South Carolina. She was born in Florence, South Carolina on May 30, 1949, to the late Joseph Mitchell, Sr., and Martha Stevenson Mitchell.
At an early age, Girlene was baptized at Maxwell Baptist Church. Even though she was an inactive member, she knew the Lord and trusted in Him.
Girlene attended Wilson High School and went to Job Corp in Seattle, Washington. In her early years, she was a truck driver for the city. She later was a CNA for Honorage Nursing Home.
Girlene endured sickness in her body for many years and she never complained. She was a humble woman with strong, great faith. She loved listening to gospel songs and sermons.
Girlene loved shopping, eating out, and keeping up with the news and her family with her cell phone and television. She met many friends in her life and enjoyed sharing what she had with others.
In addition to her parents, Girlene was preceded in death by her spouse, Robert Hilton; siblings, Woodrow Mitchell, James (Sonny) Mitchell, Catherine M. McCall, Nathan Harvey Mitchell, and Joseph Mitchell, Jr.; a nephew, Jevoric K. Mitchell, and sister-in-law, Thomasina M. Mitchell.
Those who are left to cherish her memories forever are her children, Carlton Vernon Mitchell, Sr., Johnathan Mitchell, Regina (Kenneth) Harry, all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Gerome Mitchell of Spartanburg, South Carolina; brother, Bruce Allen Mitchell of Scranton-Lake City Nursing Home; grandchildren, Kasson Vernon Mitchell, Carlton Vernon Mitchell, Jr., Jalai Symone Mitchell, Michael Gerome Rashawn James, Jada Angelique Mitchell, Demetrius Mitchell Black, Kayleigh Celeste Harry, and Mitchell Todd Cooper; sisters-in-law, Delores Mitchell and Joann B. Mitchell; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Hilton and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and the Hill Family.
