Jannie Sue Mitchum - May 30, 1947 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Kingstree)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of a Remarkable Woman, Jannie Sue Mitchum
Jannie Sue Mitchum, a woman of unwavering devotion, grace, and kindness, entered this world on May 30, 1947, and departed on January 27, 2024. She embarked on a journey that touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts she encountered.
Jannie Sue graduated from Eastern High School in Sumter, SC, in 1966, a testament to her dedication to education even in times that demanded resilience. Subsequently, her journey led her to Washington, D.C., where she lived with her Aunt Edith and Uncle Dwight. Jannie Sue worked while continuing her postsecondary education. In a twist of fate, while on lunch break at work, she crossed paths with Solomon Mitchum, Jr., her late husband, also a South Carolina native, and the love of her life. Together, they established a home filled with love, devotion, and integrity.
Their union was blessed with five children. Jannie Sue's role as a Mother was characterized by unconditional love, truth, and righteousness. Her devotion to family was unparalleled, shaping each member with a foundation of strength, compassion, a deep sense of morality, and faith in God. The devotion to family included extended family. Solomon and Jannie Sue opened their home to several of their siblings who had migrated from South Carolina to the Washington, DC, area; and helped them get their start “up North.” Similarly, many of their children’s friends felt loved, nourished, safe, and morally guided when they visited Solomon and Jannie Sue’s home.
In a professional capacity, Jannie Sue served the Nation with distinction for more than 30 years. She worked tirelessly for the Federal Government in Administration at the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security. She connected well with diverse groups of supervisors and colleagues. Her commitment to her profession mirrored the commitment she showed in every aspect of her life—steadfast, dedicated, and filled with purpose.
Beyond her professional life, Jannie Sue was quite a fashionable woman who found joy in simple pleasures. She enjoyed music, singing in the choir at school and church, directing the church choir, performing her famed “Cotton Needs a Pickin’” Black History skit; and the thrill of traveling to new places. A woman of many talents, she shared her time and talents generously, volunteering within her church community and earning the admiration of fellow congregants as an advent church member at New Jerusalem Temple in Washington, DC, under the direction of Apostle Abraham Mitchum, Sr.
Jannie Sue found solace in her faith. During childhood, she attended Asbury Methodist Church. After moving to Washington, DC, and marrying; she and her husband Solomon, Jr., later became members of Prayer Temple Church (PTC) in Washington, DC. God led them to PTC through now Apostle Abraham Mitchum, Sr., his wife Lady Loretta, and now Minister Jonathan Mitchum and his wife Anne who were already members. At PTC, Jannie Sue was baptized in Jesus’s name (Acts 2:38). Sometime thereafter, she recalled briefly encountering the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit while at home one evening. Subsequently, one Sunday, after hearing PTC Pastor Gary Richardson declare, “You have to sell out. Whatever you are holding onto, you have to sell that out.” Jannie Sue received that Word deep in her heart. Moved by that conviction, she received prayer; and at the laying on of hands, Jannie Sue was filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit speaking with tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance. (Acts 19:1-6) That fervent Spirit guided her throughout the rest of her life.
Jannie Sue’s spirit was meek, innocent, and humble, inspiring those around her to strive for their best selves. To know her was to love her, and her legacy is etched in the countless lives she touched. Her wisdom extended beyond her words, but if she could speak to us now, she would echo the timeless message: love one another and be kind. In her own way, she would also encourage us towards salvation and faith in God through the Lord Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Levy Wells and Netia Mae McGill Wells of Lynchburg, SC; husband, Solomon Mitchum, Jr; son, Solomon Mitchum III of Charleston, WV; brother, Leroy Wells of Lynchburg, SC; and three sisters Bessie McDonald of Mayesville, SC; Josephine Balogun of Lynchburg, SC; and Lena (Frederick) Ogunfiditimi of Washington, DC.
In remembrance, Jannie Sue leaves behind her cherished children, Jennifer, Stephanie, and Stephen of Maryland and Washington, DC; and Janella of Atlanta, GA. Four grandchildren: Davon, Sha’Tyra, Shantel, and Sasha. Nine great-grandchildren: Zayden, Ariyanna, Khiran, Janiya, Azariyah, Royal, Kareem, Serenity and Juelz. Three brothers Charles (Evag. Shirley) McGill of Polk City, FL; Levy (Juanita) Wells, Jr. of Adelphi, MD; and Jerome (Ann) Wells of Sumter, SC. Two sisters, Sylvia Simon of Sumter, SC; Irene (Rev. Elory) Davis of Lynchburg, SC; Aunt Edith Ceasar of Washington, DC; Mother-in-law, Hazel Mitchum of Washington, DC; seven brother-in- laws; fourteen sisters-in-laws; uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of other family and friends.
Jannie Sue Mitchum's departure leaves a void in our hearts, but her memory will forever be a beacon of love, strength, and kindness. May she rest in eternal peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and a brief biography highlighting their life achievements, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, or other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or self-published tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any accompanying photos or payment information.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Just be sure to store it safely and let your loved ones know where to find it.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or FuneralHomes.com. These sites often offer additional features like guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries are usually published within hours or days of submission, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks to publish.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

Sometimes it's possible to make minor corrections or updates to an already-published obituary. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space constraints or publication deadlines. It's essential to proofread carefully before submission.

What if I need to make corrections to an online obituary?

Contact the online platform directly to request changes. They'll guide you through their correction process, which may involve verifying the accuracy of the updated information.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, you may want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday of the deceased. Check with the original publication or platform to see if they allow republication and what their guidelines are.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features like photos or online guest books. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for print publications, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?
