Rexy Pilkey - August 22, 2016 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (O'Fallon)
Obituary Preview: Rexy Pilkey, born August 22, 2016, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge peacefully on April 16, 2024.
Rexy was our sweet “Buddy”, with the most softest, golden fur. He loved to play catch and always made sure he was the center of attention. When he heard the word, “treat”, his ears would perk and stand straight up. He enjoyed chewing on his bones, digging in the dirt, taking long walks with “Daddy”, and running around in the snow.
Rexy could sense human emotions, showing compassion and his affectionate nature to comfort our family, by nuzzling his head on our laps and licking our ears. His tail always wagged in excitement when he was asked, “you want to go for ride?” He was ecstatic to greet anyone when they arrived and begged for his back and belly to be rubbed. He especially loved his long naps, curled up on “his claim” of the couch. Rexy was extremely loyal, loving, and cuddled with us every chance he could.
Rexy lived a wonderful life, along side his biological fur-sisters and playmates, Cocoa B and Zilla.
Rexy was well loved by his human parents; Greg and Aerica, his human brothers; Tristan and Gabriel, and his favorite human pal of all; Lukas. Enjoy running free and playing catch with your new friends! Until we meet again, “Rexy-Roo”!

Departed: 02/10/2024 (O'Fallon)
Obituary Preview: Grizzly Bear Aldrich, born September 16, 2011, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 10, 2024. Grizzly was a sweet little toy poodle who loved his life with his parents, Morris and Penny Aldrich. He loved finding a spot to sunbathe, loved camping and curling up on the couch with his mom and dad. Grizzly was also referred to as “Baby Bear” or “Little Man.”
Grizzly also went to work with his dad every day, and truly never left his side (even at the groomer’s). He was an extremely loving, loyal, and intelligent boy who was well loved by every person he met. Grizzly will be eternally missed.
Grizzly is survived by his parents, Morris and Penny Aldrich; and every friend, both human and animal, that he made throughout his life.

Thorin Gollum Oakenshield - July 10, 2010 - June 19, 2022

Departed: 06/19/2022 (O'Fallon)
Obituary Preview: Thorin Gollum Oakenshield died today, June 19th, 2022 at his residence in O’Fallon, IL. He was born on July 10th, 2010 in Saint Louis, MO. Thorin was 11-and-a-half in people years. One of the shiniest, softest, and snuggliest cats in feline history, he never met a lap he didn’t like (but preferred to always be with his mom, Venessa).
Thorin was named after one of Venessa’s favorite books and movie series: The Hobbit.
Though Thorin lived a long and wonderful life, it was still too short. When Venessa first met Thorin, she might say she technically went to the shelter and picked him out. It was clear, however, that he wanted to be with her as well. She found him irresistible, and Thorin came alive most when she appeared. Thorin might have just found his way into her life, but it was love at first sight. No matter how they found each other, there’s a sense that it was meant to be: synchronicity.
Not only did they have an inseparable bond, Thorin was always particularly tuned to Venessa’s feelings and always wanted to comfort her when she was upset or ill. Thorin always knew when she was coming home, even when she left at random, unplanned times, in a different car, or by foot. Thorin would get up and go stand at the windows or door about 15 minutes before she arrived (this phenomenon only seems to happen with animals who are closely bonded). You could say he would read her mind. Thorin would sleep right beside her nightly if he wasn’t sharing the same pillow he would be in her arms.
Thorin was well loved, fought hard, and even when he was done fighting, Venessa wasn’t done fighting for him. She let him go asleep in her arms for one last time. Paw prints will be left on the hearts of everyone who knew this handsome boy.
Thorin leaves behind his mother Venessa to cherish his memories along with Halie and his fur siblings: Madeline, Bagheera, Tank, Castor and Pollux. Thorin was preceded in death by his brother: Thanos Apollo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide details about their life, such as their accomplishments, interests, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share information about funeral or memorial services, allowing others to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide accurate and meaningful information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary. Be sure to follow their specific requirements for content, length, and formatting.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms and websites that allow you to publish an obituary. These may include funeral home websites, online obituary databases, social media groups, or memorial websites. Online obituaries can reach a wider audience and remain accessible for years to come.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or online platform. Newspapers may charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features and customization.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's accomplishments and legacy.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers or microfilm records.

Can I edit an existing obituary?

If you need to make corrections or updates to an existing obituary, contact the publication or online platform where it was originally published. They may have procedures for making changes or revisions.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may publish within a day or two of submission, while online platforms may post immediately or within a few hours.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help bring comfort and smiles to those who read it.

What if I don't have all the information needed for an obituary?

If you're missing certain details about the person's life, don't worry! You can still write a meaningful obituary that focuses on what you do know about them. You can also ask other family members or friends for input and assistance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that were meaningful to the person who has passed away can add depth and context to the obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions for copyrighted material.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to err on the side of discretion when writing the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on difficult circumstances.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include details about how donations can be made and where they will go.

How do I share an online obituary with others?

You can share an online obituary through social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, via email, or by copying and pasting the link into messaging apps or text messages.

Can I create a memorial website for my loved one?

Yes! Memorial websites allow you to create a dedicated space for sharing memories, photos, stories, and condolences. Many online platforms offer tools for creating these types of websites.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This depends on the online platform where it was published. Some websites may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove older content after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform's policies before submitting your obituary.

Can I reprint an existing obituary in another publication?

You may need permission from the original publication or author before reprinting an existing obituary elsewhere. Be sure to respect copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before sharing someone else's work.

What if I'm not satisfied with how my loved one's obituary was written?

If you're unhappy with how an obituary was written or published, try speaking with the author or publication directly to express your concerns. They may be willing to make revisions or corrections.

How can I preserve my loved one's memory beyond just an obituary?

In addition to writing an obituary, consider creating a memory book, scrapbook, or photo album; planting a tree or garden; making a donation in their name; or establishing a scholarship fund – all ways to celebrate their life and legacy.
