Departed: 03/16/2024 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Bobby Koefer, 95, legendary steel guitarist, has passed away.
John Robert (Bobby) Koefer passed away March 16th at St. Charles Hospital, Bend, OR after a recent illness. He was born August 18, 1928 in Clay Center, KS.
He took an interest in music, at an early age, listening to “Hawaii Calls” on the radio and later discovered Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.
In the late 30’s he bought a steel guitar via mail order. It came with no instruction guide, steel bar or picks and no-one around to help. He relied on his own instincts and made up his own tunings and chords and began playings his own solos. He created his own unorthodox, unique and original approach to playing. To this day, few have been able to duplicate or replicate his style.
In 1947 he made his first recordings and did radio programs in Dallas, TX with Homer Clemons, Bill Boyd and Jim Boyd. In 1950 he went to Indiana playing for Tex Justice. Then he went on to work for Bob Wills, with whom he made recordings with MGM and Snader's Telescriptions and did many radio programs in the southwest.
In 1950 he joined Pee Wee King. They were regulars on the Grand Old Opry, recorded for RCA and King Records. During this time Bobby wrote a steel guitar instrumental “Curtain Call”, which today is still well known by steel guitarists around the world and is a standard in the industry. He later went on to play with Billy Gray.
In 1956 he led his own band, 'Hi Ho Four’ in Wichita, KS. They played 6 nights a week for 5 years until music styles began changing.
In 1961 Bobby moved to Alaska working in the construction business for the next 25 years. He stopped playing music and rumor had it he buried his steel, had a funeral and vowed to never play again. He and his steel survived the 9.2 Great Alaskan Earthquake and post quake Tsunami of March 1964. During the winter months he traveled to remote countries and spent 5 winters with the Inuit people on Little Diomede Island on the Bering Strait, 2 miles from Russia.
In 1989 Bobby retired and moved to Bend, OR and resumed his music career. His music abilities and talent were better than ever. For the next 25 years he recorded and played with Leon Rausch and the Texas Playboys, Truitt Cunningham, Tom Morrell, Tommy Allsup, Eldon Shamblin and Johnny Gimble. He played many concerts, events and dances including Lincoln Center, NY and the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. Among his many awards, he is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Bobby is well known for his positive attitude, high energy, sharp wit and friendliness. He was a mentor and teacher and help guide many up and coming musicians. He is well known for saying “You don’t have to be good, you just have to SELL IT”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Judy of Bend, OR. A son, Gregg Koefer (wife Sandy) of Midlothian, TX. A daughter, Tracey Hartgrave (husband Cliff) of Terrell, TX as well as 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

R. Carroll Cleaver - February 16, 1936 - February 01, 2024

Departed: 02/01/2024 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Beloved mother and grandmother R. Carroll Cleaver passed away February 1, 2024, in Bend, Oregon just two weeks shy of her 88th birthday and entered into joy everlasting.
Carroll was born in Seattle, Washington to Michael and Ruth Mingo on February 16, 1936. Carroll grew up in Tacoma, Washington with her older brother, Michael. The two were close throughout their lives. Sadly, Carroll lost her father at age nine and her mother at age fourteen. After her Aunt Mary passed away when Carroll was eighteen, Gonzaga University became her family, along with her brother, Michael. She stayed at the dorms for the spring semester, not taking classes, but enjoying what would become lifelong friendships and the spring dances. She met her future husband, Bill, on a blind date. She would recall later that Bill was one of the better dancers. They married at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane, Washington in 1957. Carroll was student teaching at the time but put that on hold when the couple welcomed their first daughter, Elizabeth. Bill and Carroll moved to southern California to be near family, and Bill began his career as a teacher in Anaheim. During this time, Carroll put her heart into her primary vocation as loving mother and busy homemaker as the couple welcomed six more children into their lives. Carroll did much to create a happy childhood for their children with individual birthday outings, ice cream floats at report card times and Big Bear trips for Christmas—taking pictures of all of it! Her children appreciated her good humor, light heart and simple but wise sayings. Being dropped off at school, they would hear on a regular basis: “Be good! Learn something!”
As the children grew, Carroll took on work outside the home. She worked as an ER clerk at West Anaheim Community Hospital for ten years and later as a clerk for the Orange Police Department for four years. Carroll loved playing on the hospital bowling team and having lunch with her friends. She also enjoyed being an active member of the Mothers of Twins Club for years, serving as club president for multiple terms. Bill and Carroll kept in touch with their Gonzaga friends and always rooted for their Bulldogs during March Madness. In the early eighties, Carroll found out that she was just a few units short of her degree at Gonzaga. She took a couple of classes at Fullerton College and earned her diploma and tassel at last!
In her early fifties, Carroll was blessed with the opportunity to connect with her birthmother, Agnes, as well as her half-sister, Susan, and her half-brothers, Phil and Ted. This additional family brought Carroll years of love and joy.
Carroll was overjoyed to enter the grandmother years. She cherished each new grandchild that she held and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them and being an enthusiastic and loving presence for outings, plays, concerts, graduations, and weddings.
Bill and Carroll faithfully attended St. Justin Martyr Church for fifty years in Anaheim. In 2012, they moved to Bend, Oregon to live with their daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Richard. There they attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Calvary Chapel of Bend.
Carroll lost her beloved husband, Bill, in July 2020. She is also pre-deceased by her parents and brother, Michael. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth (Richard), Colleen (Dave), Joyce (Tom), Bill (Billy), Mike (Julie), Patrick (Debbie) and Theresa (Mitch).
Carroll is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Fox Metcalf and Janette Barber-St. Jean, Michael and James Bacon, Benjamin and Joseph Dillon, Danielle and Jenna Cleaver, Dakota, Tyler, Eric and Jessica Johnson. She had several great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Bend, Oregon on February 24, 11:00 a.m. with graveside service to follow at Deschutes Memorial Chapel and Gardens.

Marie Walsh - January 20, 1928 - January 08, 2024

Departed: 01/08/2024 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Marie Walsh, of Bend, died of natural causes in January. Her funeral mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi in Bend located at 2450 NE 27th St., on April 13, 2024 at
11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. The rosary ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. Marie was born in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her parents moved to California where she met and married Loyd Walsh. They raised two kids in Merrill, Oregon and
were married for 25 years. She found her home in Bend, Oregon in 1984. Marie was an optimist with a wonderful sense of humor. She lit up the room with her infectious smile. If you knew her then you most likely played at least
one game of cribbage. She enjoyed teaching her two kids and many grandchildren how to play this family honored game. She loved to bake, especially bread. She told me one time that her greatest achievement in baking was a braided bread that was the size of the dinner table. It had taken her all day to prepare. I asked her, “Why did you make it? Was it for a party?” She casually replied, “No, just to see if I could do it. It was a great dinner.”
In 2005, she was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service award. At that point she was also recognized for being the longest-serving Deschutes County volunteer, with her start being in 1996. She volunteered at the Deschutes County Health Department, mainly helping with the Maternal Child Health Program. During this time she also helped with projects like WIC, School-Based Health Centers, and the Immunization program. She also served at St. Francis of Assisi in Bend. One most likely met her in the front office.
Other favorite pastimes included bowling, traveling, taking pictures of flowers, birdwatching, and enjoying time with people.
Survivors include a son, Alan Walsh, a daughter, Debbie Purdom. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anne Beckman, and a sister, Lucille Ortis. She will be laid to rest at the Deschutes Memorial Chapel and Gardens, although no service will take place there. If you would like to send flowers or need further information, please call St. Francis of Assisi in Bend.

"Brick" Catherine Grace Brogan Logan - June 13, 1934 - September 04, 2023

Departed: 09/04/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Brick Logan died in her home September 4 , 2023 of natural causes, surrounded by her six surviving children. She was utterly devoted to her faith, her large family, and her many friends. True to her name, Brick possessed quiet, incredible strength. She survived many great adversities, always carrying herself with amazing grace. Brick was a devout Catholic. She surely earned a fast track to heaven just by the fact that she parented actively everyday for 65 years, until the death of her special son Danny in 2020. She has cared for and been a steadfast blessing to all in her large family, her many circles of friends, and to others beyond.
Brick was a quiet bright light, often called Saint Brick, a title she rejected. She was traditional, faithful, and evolving beyond lesser ideas in the culture, motivated by love to listen, learn, and grow in accepting difference and supporting more of those on the margins; she lived the values of her faith. Her own hardships led her to greater service of others. Brick and Byron were at the vanguard of parents keeping children with Down’s Syndrome at home rather than in institutions, their decision impacting lives and the culture well beyond our family.
Brick always said she didn’t want to leave her home “until you have to carry me out.” That wish came true. Twice.
In 2013, her children joyfully carried her out of her old home, to allow a new house to be built which would allow Brick and Danny to age in place alongside their same beloved neighbors.
And on Labor Day 2023, her children tearfully carried Brick out of her new home, after perhaps the hardest of her life’s many labors concluded her journey here. In her last weeks, when her body was failing and she was seeing things the rest of us couldn’t, her restless arms, heart, and mind wanted to continue praying, preparing food, giving service, and caring for children, loved ones, and strangers.
Brick is survived by her children: Elayne (Robert) Currie, Gregory (Terri) Logan, James Logan, Beverly Logan, Robert (Roxane) Logan, and Rose (Mike) Surgeon; also by 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, with three more in the hopper. She is survived also by her sister, Josephine (Frank) McNamee, and sister-in-law, Sr. Joanne Logan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Byron Logan, their children, Francis, Daniel, baby Thomas, and Baby Girl; also by her parents John and Lelia Brogan, her brothers Thomas Brogan, Francis (Kay) Brogan, James (Arlien) Brogan, and sisters Agnes (Cletus) Annen, Margaret Brogan, Cecilia (Joseph) McNamee, and Bernadette (Harold) Brown.
September 23, 2023 services will honor this beloved woman: 9:30am Rosary and 10:00am funeral at St. Francis Church, followed by luncheon, all at 2450 NE 27th St, Bend OR 97701; 2:00pm Burial at Deschutes Memorial Garden. Donations in Brick’s honor can be made to Opportunity Foundation of Central Oregon, Special Olympics, St. Vincent DePaul, or Partners in Care.

Bonnie June Snyder - January 19, 1950 - August 17, 2023

Departed: 08/17/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: A devoted wife, loving mother and beloved grandmother, Bonnie June Snyder, 73, passed away on August 17th, 2023, at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon after suffering a severe stroke. Bonnie was born on January 19th, 1950 in Portland, Oregon to Lloyd Lee Cannaday and June Isabell (nee Vaughan) Cannaday, but moved to Newberg, Oregon in 1959, where she and her siblings grew up on a 9 acre farm. She had fond memories of raising chickens and rabbits, and milking the family cow. But she really loved Old Dan, a brown work horse the neighbors had given the family when they moved to Newberg. Bonnie used to ride him bareback, and everyone agreed he belonged to her. Bonnie loved animals, “more” she would say “than most people!”
Bonnie was 19 when she met Roy, the love of her life. They dated for a period of time, but in the end, separated and married other people. It wasn’t until a chance encounter in 1987, that they reunited and forged a union that would last the rest of her life.
Bonnie and Roy lived together in Oregon until 1991 when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Roy had lived in the area briefly and when he described it to Bonnie, they both agreed to give it a try. After only a few months, they decided that Colorado wasn’t for them, and they moved back to Oregon where they rented an apartment in Tigard until they married on February 9th, 1993 and bought a house in Newberg.
In the fall of 1996 they once again quit their jobs and decided to relocate, this time moving to Bend, Oregon where Roy worked for Chapman-Huffman Incorporated, and Bonnie worked for Fuqua Homes. In January 1998 Bonnie joined Roy at Chapman-Huffman and they both worked there until retiring in December 2019.
Bonnie was a loving mother and proud of her three daughters, Holly, Donna, and Laura. She was selfless in the sacrifices she made to ensure their needs were met and enrolled them in swim lessons from an early age. She watched them progress from swim lessons, to swim team, to water polo players, and she was always there with her support and to cheer them on.
Bonnie didn’t have many hobbies, but enjoyed RV camping, which was something she did for most of her adult life.
Bonnie is survived by husband, Roy Snyder of Bend, daughters: Holly (Alan) Charleboix of La Pine, Donna (John) Hoffman of Depoe Bay, and Laura Avery of Newberg. She is also survived by siblings: Opal Hunt of Rogue River, Herbietta Jane (Rusty) Heater of Newberg, Evelyn Parlette of Newberg, Lloyd (Margaret) Cannaday of Roseburg, Ray (Rhonda) Cannaday of Boring, Wayne (Beckie) Cannaday of Newberg, Terry Cannaday of Newberg, Jeannine Cannaday of Newberg, and Martha (Jim) Brown of Bend and five grandchildren: Abigail Tanneberg of Coulee City, Washington, Jason Avery of Depoe Bay, Sean and Shelby Charleboix of La Pine, and Jacob Hoffman of Depoe Bay.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, as well as siblings Fern Roady and Richard [Dick] Cannaday.
As per Bonnie’s wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held.

Departed: 08/16/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Martin E. Thompson ("Martin") grew up in Harney County, Oregon. After Martin completed high school, he moved away from Harney County to pursue an undergraduate degree and expand his horizons. Martin successfully obtained his undergraduate degree, and then put himself through law school and an LLM Program.
After completing his legal education, Martin relocated back to Harney County and opened his first law firm. Martin enjoyed personal success in that venture: it was where he met the love of his life, Leslie.
Martin and Leslie's journey took them to Deschutes County, Oregon.
In Deschutes County, Martin found a large community of friends, peers, and clients, all of whom were impacted by Martin's vivacious personality, his incredible sense of humor, and his love for those around him. Martin's passion for representing his clients and advocating for causes that he believed in was infectious and was one of his driving forces.
However, there was nothing that Martin loved more than his lovely wife, Leslie, and his three children, Dalton (age 9), Sophia "Sophie" (age 7), Dillinger "Dilly" (age 5). Sadly, Martin will not have the opportunity to meet his fourth child, whom Leslie is expecting to welcome into this world later this year.
A "Go Fund Me" has been set up to help fund an appropriate memorial service for Martin. All donations will be provided to Martin's family. https://www.gofundme.com/f/martin-e-thompson

David C. Keyser - November 23, 1938 - February 17, 2023

Departed: 02/17/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: David C. Keyser, 84, passed away Friday, February 17 quickly and quietly at home in Bend, Oregon. Born November 23, 1938 in Salt Lake City, he built upon the legacy of his parents Malcom A (Bud) and Virginia Keyser. David grew up with his surviving brother John M. Keyser in Holladay, where down the lane, David met the sweetheart of his dreams - his surviving wife Mary Anne Hoagland. They were married for 61 years.
David attended Olympus High School followed by an enlistment to the United States Coast Guard. He sailed aboard the USS Taney and developed a love for the sea and built unbreakable friendships around sailing that endured a lifetime.
David graduated from Westminster College and quickly became an officer of Walker Bank & Trust Company. His tenacity to understand the human element in banking won him many promotions and accolades across the West. Because his integrity never wavered and his customer’s commitments always delivered, he became an icon and retired that way after 40 years in banking.
His desire to move closer to the sea came to reality in 1980 when he moved his family to the Pacific Northwest. With the wind on his back and the sun on his face, David captained his sailboat throughout the archipelago of the San Juan Islands discovering many treasured places of the inside passage. Aboard his S/V Wayward, crew became loving friends, confidants, and “The Mighty Men of the Wayward”. His appreciation for the history and art of sailing led him to be a lifelong supporter for the Center of Wooden Boats in Seattle.
David is survived by his wife Mary Anne, and children Christopher (Steven Casteele), Tony (Jill Keyser), Elizabeth (Matthew DeBlare), and three grandchildren Simon Keyser, Carson Mullan, and Isabella Mullan. Besides many family members and friends (and if you knew Dave, you were his friend!), other survivors include his Airstream “Silvertip” and the truck “Big Red”, many files and notes, pocket watches and knives, and a collection of car washing equipment.
Friends and family are invited to David’s celebration of life on Saturday, February 25th at Tetherow Resort Pavilion in Bend, Oregon at 1:00pm.
To honor his legacy of helping others, memorial gifts can be sent to the Keyser-Hoagland Family Scholarship at Westminster College, 1840 South, 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84105.

Mary Ellen Rushton - May 19, 1954 - January 15, 2023

Departed: 01/15/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Rushton (Jackson) was born to Don and Barbara Jackson in Macon, Georgia, May 19th, 1954. Mary passed into the mystic on January 15, 2023, in Bend, Oregon in the presence of her sons and daughters-in-law. A modest, casual family ceremony and outdoor celebration of life will be scheduled this summer in McCall, Idaho at Louie Lake where she can join her mom and beloved granddaughter. Her ashes will be spread amongst Idaho’s breathtaking mountain grandeur, where she enjoyed being outdoors with her grandkids Hudson (20) and Sailor (18). Mary is preceded in death by grandparents, Mary and Fred Hatchett, parents Don and Barbara Jackson, and granddaughter Piper Van Middendorp. She continues to be adored by her husband Steve, sons Freddie and Tyler and their spouse Jamie and Linda, her precious grandkids Hudson and Sailor (Freddie and Jamie), and Johann (Tyler), and siblings Ken, Ann, Donnie, and Elsie. A legion of family and friends who cherished Mary make a list too long to detail.
Some of the most powerful things in this world are family, a mother’s love, and music. The passing of this beautiful, fun-loving soul has left a void in our family but hearts full of love and music. In the days preceding her death, Mary’s favorite songs were played and sung by her family and friends as they came to say their goodbyes. Aunt Mary was a favorite of all the nieces and nephews growing up with her silliness, dance parties, movie nights, and junk food. She enjoyed international travel, especially exploring her family roots in Panama. Mary and Steve spent three weeks with her boys, grandkids, and niece, Jodi, in Costa Rica. Janna, one of her lifelong friends and closest travel companions, passed away from cancer recently, not long after the two spent time exploring Central America. The two troublemakers are doubtlessly adventuring through Heaven, leaving a wake of smiles and laughter behind them. Mary cherished her lifelong friendships with all the “Bozettes,” her childhood gang from school in the Bay area of California (you know who you are). Mary was endlessly charismatic. She commanded every social setting with personality, with a dazzling smile (and diastema- a sign of high intelligence she would always say), with jokes, with song and dance, and with caring. Endlessly the entertainer, she was a gifted cook, vocalist, and comedian. All her talents were fostered by a heart that felt deeply, loved to the fullest, and lived without reservation. It seemed her ability to give was infinite, though sadly, she never reserved enough space in her heart to love and care for herself.
Mary loved her sons fiercely and ensured that above all, they felt loved. She had a playful relationship with her boys even through life’s challenges. She could con a conman and could’ve been a star on Broadway. She would prank Freddie and Tyler then exclaim with a grand Shakespearian hand gesture “I was ACTING!” She would then give a brief award speech thanking the academy. Mary insisted to the boys that Anne Ramsey, Ma Fratelli in the Goonies and Mrs. Momma in Throw Mama from the Train, was their real mother. She was convincing enough that the boys lamented Ramsey’s death in 1988 and still feel a longing for Ma Fratelli’s hugs when they watch the Goonies. She led perfectly harmonized ballads with her mom and sisters at every family reunion and even recorded a studio album with Ann and Elsie. Her life was full of her fans. People she didn’t know were simply friends she hadn’t met yet.
Mary graduated from Homestead High School in Sunnyvale, California. She married fellow Homesteader, Roger Van Middendorp, and had a son, Freddie, in 1975. They moved to Meridian, Idaho weeks later beginning her life in the Gem State. Son, Tyler, arrived in 1978. Mary and Roger divorced three years later. Both parents remained in Idaho. Mary worked in medical and dental offices during her early years of marriage. Later career moves took her into the insurance industry and Hewlett Packard, following in her father’s footsteps. Mary met her kind and gentle, eventual husband, Steve Rushton in Boise, Idaho through connections in the sobriety community. Mary and Steve moved to Corvallis, Oregon with Steve’s transfer in his position at HP. Freddie and Tyler relocated with the Rushtons, attending middle and high school in Oregon. Mary finally found her calling as an emergency dispatcher and station manager for the Oregon State Police campus location at Oregon State University. After retirement, Mary and Steve left the rainy, grey side of the Cascade Mountains and settled in Bend, Oregon. Steve and Mary both experienced medical emergencies the same day, finding both transported by ambulance to St. Charles’ ICU for critical treatment. Steve improved while, unfortunately, Mary passed away from organ failure. Steve was able to spend time at Mary’s side with family during her final days. Steve is living in temporary housing in central Oregon and is adapting to this new chapter of life with the help of his stepsons, family, and friends.

Beverly "Jean" Akins - June 11, 1927 - January 09, 2023

Departed: 01/09/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Beverly “Jean” Akins Lovingly known as GRANNY
Our mother, Beverly “Jean” Akins, went to Heaven this week at the age of 95. She is the last of a generation, and is now singing with the Angels, and having a wonderful reunion with those who have gone before her.
She raised six children, and was instrumental in the care, love, and nurturing of a mass of grand, and great grandchildren.
Jean was born June 11, 1927 in Coquille, Oregon, to Ray and Florence Brown. She died January 9th, 2023 in her home of 45 years in Bend, Oregon.
In addition to her husband Fred, Jean is preceded in death by 4 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.
Jean played the organ and piano, serving as organist for her church for many years. She also had the most beautiful soprano voice, and listening to her sing The Lord’s Prayer for her church family was a special treat.
We remember her having knitting needles in her hands all the time, and gifted her creations to the people she loved. She was a seamstress, and loved making stuffed animals for her grandchildren and her hallmark sweatshirts that she wore until they were threadbare.
After never being sick a day in her life, Granny was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, at the age of 85. Because of the loving care and devotion of her daughter Deena, who dropped everything to move in with her and be her caretaker for her remaining years, Mom overcame several months of chemo and radiation treatments, and blessed us all with another 10 years of hugs and laughter. We will always be grateful to Deena for helping Mom to enjoy her final years surrounded by love and children.
Granny is survived by six children: Sheryl McQuig (Paul); Roseanna Juhola (Glenn Wright); Marvin Akins (Connie); Gifford Akins (Tiffany); Deena Perrine, and Brenda Shaw (Bill Smith). She will be missed by 15 Grandchildren, 32 great Grandchildren, and 2 great great Grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. We will forever be in her debt for her unconditional love and generous spirit.
Jean is also survived by the BEST best friend of all time, and her “Partner in Crime”, Dorothy Williams.
Jean’s earthly body will be laid to rest in Deschutes Memorial Gardens, next to her devoted husband, Fred Akins Jr., who preceded her in death on February 3, 2001. A Celebration of Jean’s life will be held in the early summer, so that all of her distant family can gather once more to celebrate the wonderful lifetime of love she gave us.

Jason grew up in Sandy, Utah and was raised by his grandparents Victor and Lucille Moore. He attended Hillcrest High School and excelled in academics, swimming, and football. Jason loved The Utah Utes, poker, cruises, corvettes, and big trucks. He also enjoyed travelling with his family. Annually, he went on several cruises visiting most of the islands in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Alaska. Ultimately, his favorite vacation spot was Mexico.
Jason looked forward to boating and fishing on the lake, all the while singing Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Fishing in the Dark”. You would also find him at any karaoke bar that he could find, entertaining the audience with all the old classics.
He was also someone who could go into a room full of people, not knowing anyone, then leave with 10 new friends. He was personable, outgoing, and easy to get along with. Because of this, many people were attracted to him.
He was also a jokester and young at heart. He loved to play tricks on people, especially his loved ones. You always knew Jason was up to something when you could hear his distinct and contagious “jokester” laugh. His niece (Brynn) and nephews (Jaxton, Parker, and Zaiden) were usually on the receiving end of his mischievous and playful behavior.
Additionally, Jason was extremely hardworking. Because of his competitive nature, he always wanted to be number one and the top in sales. He was constantly striving for success.
Jason is survived by his wife Nikki, his children Ashton and Zachary, his 4 stepchildren Anthony, Destinee, Alexis and Mersadeez, and his boxer Roxee. He was “Papa” to 6 grandchildren Kaytlynn, Ryker, Kenzie, Brightynn, Kaden, and Waylon. Jason’s biggest life dream was to have a big family. That dream became a reality when he married Nikki. He took her children in as his own, and although he didn’t have any siblings growing up, he gained 4 brothers. JR, JP, Taylor, and Jake welcomed Jason with open arms as their “new brother”- instantly the shenanigans began! Jason is also survived by his Mother and Father-in-law Banya and Mark Letham, and his Mother Sandra Buchmann. Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents, Victor and Lucille Moore, Father Greg Moore, Father-in-law Randy O’Reilly, Brother-in-law J.R. O’Reilly, and boxer Tazia. Janet E. Emerson - May 30, 1936 - December 15, 2022

Departed: 12/15/2022 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Janet Emerson, 86 was born to Raymond and Dorothy (Crocket) Stacy in Klickitat, Washington, on May 30th, 1936. The family moved to Portland and later settled in Bend.
Janet graduated from Bend Senior High School in 1954 where she was an active student with many friends. She was a member of the High School Pep Club all four years. She was well liked and crowned Prom Queen her senior year. She was also a Princess in the Bend Water Pageant where she and the court floated down Mirror Pond on a swan float.
Janet married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Emerson on November 23, 1955. They moved to Philomath, Oregon where they made their first home and had three children, Tamela, Deborah, and Rodney. This year would have been their 67th wedding anniversary.
We were fortunate to have had a mom who was at home for most of our upbringing. In fact, our family was sometimes compared to the "Leave it to Beaver" show. Janet took pride in her home, both inside and out, and loved working in her yard. She was an avid seamstress who made numerous outfits for her family and beautiful western shirts for her husband.
After her children were a little older, she worked for Volume Shoe Source in Corvallis. She later volunteered as a Candy Striper at Good Samaritan Hospital and served as Auxiliary President of the Benton County Sheriff's Posse where she spearheaded many new, fun ideas. Janet also served as the Auxiliary reporter who wrote for "Beaver Banter from Benton County". She was creative.
After the family moved back to Bend in 1975, she substituted within the Bend School District and was hired full time a year later as a Teacher's Aide at Young, Kenwood, and Kingston Elementary Schools. Her years working at the school district were all chronicled in photo albums we still have to this day. Then, after nearly 20 years, both she and Ralph retired and enjoyed a quiet life at their beautiful ranch in Bend.
As a Grandmother, Janet was the driving force behind our annual trips to Seaside which we enjoyed as a family for many years. The grandchildren guessed at how much was in the "money jar", received prizes for "first and last to turn in their answers", and participated in annual spelling bees and trivia contests. We all looked forward to her homemade ice cream and M&Ms. In addition, she created our treasured family photos calendar which she distributed each Christmas along with new mittens.
Janet is survived by her three children, Tammy Wibel (Dennis), Debbie Salladay (John), and Rod Emerson (Debe), six grandchildren, Devin and Meagan Wibel, Brittany Brunke (Will), Mackenzie Wood (Diane), Nicole Stodghill (Dom), and Tyler Emerson. In addition, she leaves six great grandchildren, Preston and Rylynn, Greyson and Kyah, and Daxtyn and Asher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph earlier this year, both parents, and her sister, Shirley.
Janet was a loving wife, mom, Grammy, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and friend. She loved her family very much and we all loved her. As a family, we would like to thank her caregiver, Lisa who was a wonderful friend to Janet this past year and to all of us. No public service will be held. A public viewing is scheduled for Saturday, December 31st from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Deschutes Memorial Chapel & Gardens are in charge of arrangements. https://www.bendfuneralhomes.com/

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to express their condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or personal websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may require specific formatting, word count, and deadlines for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks. Be sure to check with the publication for their specific deadlines and guidelines.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or videos. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for print publications, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?
