Nancy was born into life on August 22, 1956, to Ira Keith and Sandra (Haylock) House. She married her loving husband Tom Highly on July 12, 1975, in Maquoketa, IA, and together they had two children.
She had worked at Village Inn (1982-1995), the former John Deere Health Care (1996-2007) and most recently Advanced Radiology, S.C., Moline, retiring in April of 2023.
Nancy found great joy in being a wife, mother and grandmother and found true passion in life; she expressed this in the way she lived. She was her husband Tom’s whole world and the relationship they shared was a true definition of pure love. She thrived on “making it happen” and that led to her finding true happiness in pool parties, vacationing, dive bars, cheeseburgers, dancing with her husband and giving directions to people to get things done, mainly to those closest to her.  She lacked the ability to sit still and invited all those she loved to cook for, making sure everyone was fed.  With her welcoming nature, you could always get a meal at Mom’s house. Among Nancy’s many loves was the time spent with her cherished grandchildren and her gravity toward all animals, especially dogs.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Tom; daughter; Amber Highly, son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Melissa Highly; grandchildren, Chelsey Highly, Quentin Nickerson and Alyssa Highly; sister, Louanne Clark; many cherished friends, including cousins, Jane and Lorin Steines, her neighbor, Jane and her sweet fur babies, Sammy, Abbey and Layla. Her parents, Ira and Sandra and mother and father-in-law, Lee and Arlene Highly preceded her in death. Family and friends are invited to share memories and express condolences at www.deroofunerahome.com.

Gordon Bibee - June 02, 1960 - April 06, 2023

Departed: 04/06/2023 (Moline)
Obituary Preview: Gordon Bibee, 62, of Galesburg, formerly of Moline, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2023, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. Funeral Services are 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is Thursday from 4 - 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the ARC of the Quad Cities.
Gordon was born June 2, 1960, in Moline, IL, the son of William and Helen Bibee. He was born several months after his father died.  His mother was a strong Christian woman who raised him with love and a belief in what he could do rather than what he couldn’t. Life put many obstacles in Gordon’s path, and he accepted them and moved on with love and cheerfulness.  He gave love to all he met and, in return, all loved him.  He was always ready to help with work and took pride in helping.
Music was Gordon’s delight, and he could amaze you with his musical trivia knowledge.  He also enjoyed exercising and was ready to prove he was strong, much to his nephews chagrin as he wrestled and tickled them.  He also loved food and could not be trusted around the holiday goodies.  But, most of all, he loved his family and reveled in family gatherings where he could perform with his puppets.
He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Sharon (Terry) Hodson and Mayda (Jim) Funfsinn, brothers, Bill (Karen) Bibee and Michael (Dee) Bibee, and several nieces and nephews. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.deroofuneralhome.com

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It is often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, accomplishments, hobbies, and details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help others remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute to the deceased.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the deceased's life, it's best to approach these topics with tact and sensitivity. Consider consulting with family members or a professional writer for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or weeks.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. Contact the publication or online platform directly to inquire about their editing policies and procedures.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for publication in a newspaper.

Are online obituaries free?

Some online obituary platforms offer free listings, while others may charge a fee for premium features or longer-term storage. Be sure to review pricing and terms before submitting your obituary.

You can try searching online archives, contacting local libraries or genealogical societies, or reaching out to funeral homes that may have records from past services.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and preserve their story for future generations.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Consider enlisting the help of a professional writer or asking a trusted friend or family member to assist you. Many funeral homes also offer writing services or guidance.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Triple-check facts and dates before submitting the obituary. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review the text for errors or inaccuracies.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Incorporating meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary.

What if I need help with grammar or spelling in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Most publications and online platforms have editors who will review your submission for errors before publication. You can also ask a friend or family member to proofread your work.

Sometimes. Check with the online platform beforehand to see if they allow external links. This can be a useful way to direct readers to additional resources or memorials.

How do I handle condolences and guestbook messages after publishing an obituary?

Moderate comments carefully and respond promptly to messages of condolence. You may also want to set up a separate memorial page or social media group for sharing memories and tributes.

What if I'm overwhelmed by grief during the writing process?

Taking care of yourself during this difficult time is crucial. Consider seeking support from friends, family, or a professional counselor if needed. Remember that writing an obituary is just one part of the grieving process – take your time and prioritize self-care.
