Ima Gean Larison - January 15, 1938 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Baxter Springs)
Obituary Preview: Ima Gean Larison (January 15th, 1938-April 26th, 2024) Baxter Springs, Kansas
She was known to many as “Aunt Jean”, “Grandma Jean” or “Miss Jean” and accepted everyone in as one of her own. She spent the majority of her life being a caretaker. Whether it be taking relatives in, cleaning houses for people in the community, working at one of the many local doctors offices or hospitals, and even doing home health care as a CNA for many years. She was always one to care for others. Putting everyone else’s needs above her own. She loved listening to country style hymns, reading Christian based novels and watching old westerns on TV. She was a very active lady, spending most of her time taking walks around the town, to work, the store and just strolling through the parks, cemeteries and library walking trails. She spent many days at ball fields supporting grandkids and great grandkids in their sporting events or making sure she was active in all the church gatherings from Macedonia Baptist, to her later church home of First Baptist in Riverton. She loved her church family and friends and loved cooking nice big meals for both them and her immediate family to gather around. She had been through so much in her lifetime, including many medical scares that she would always resiliently overcome. She was one of the strongest women we’ve ever known. She was bright, funny and had a heart of gold. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her, would say the same.
Ima Gean was preceded in death by both her late husband of 21 years (Howard Newcomb of Oklahoma) and (Jim Larison of Kansas), her parents Chester and Rosa Lee Allen, along with her brothers James, Charles and Robert Allen of Kentucky.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Stoker of Kentucky, children Sheri Hautala and her husband Ron, Tony Robertson and his wife Deborah, Terry Newcomb and his wife Mary Jo, Jacque Newcomb, Danny Newcomb and his wife Amy. Her grandchildren, Aaron Gilmore, Kayla Kirk, Samantha Morgan, Robbie Newcomb, Natalie Burton, Jesse Newcomb, Shelbye Crum, Travis Seitz, Nate Newcomb and Alaina Newcomb. Along with many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Pastor Neil Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Pallbearers for the service are; Nate Newcomb, Robbie Newcomb, Jesse Newcomb, Travis Seitz, Steven Burton, Mason Morgan, and Aaron Gilmore. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 or in care of the funeral home. JD Fuerst - June 22, 1935 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Baxter Springs)
Obituary Preview: Today is that day. The day Superman hangs up his cape to a ‘Well done good and faithful servant’. It’s the day our rudder gets removed from the boat. It’s the day the kindest, most hardworking, patient, soft-spoken, good to others, generous to a fault which he would have said wasn’t possible, hero with a heart of gold breaths his last. Today, we grieve together, family, the Dad and Papa that never had a bad day, because ‘you just have to get glad in the pants you got mad in’, never said an unkind word to anyone for any reason, and never worried needlessly because ‘if money can fix a problem, it isn’t a problem’. What a life he’s lived and what a legacy he leaves. He was a good and upright man.
There are few people in this world like JD Fuerst. He was born in Salina, Kansas to Ed and Lucille Fuerst the youngest of 4. The family soon settled in Clarinda, Iowa. Clarinda would become home and the place he came back to time and time again. He enlisted in the military from Clarida, started a family and came back to Clarinda later in life to live near lifelong friends. His friends were like family and he enjoyed countless happy hours, morning coffees on the square, and weekend breakfasts with them. He was a good son, brother, and great friend.
Dad was “The Old Guard” Army. As part of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment he served as a Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in DC for 2 tours. Which is rare, usually soldiers are only invited for 1 tour. Dad’s honesty, integrity, duty, dedication, and honor caused a second invitation to serve. He escorted Miss America during that time and served on funeral duty in the Capital for US dignitaries lying in state in the Capital rotunda. One of his fondest memories was taking his sons to one of the Tomb Guard Reunions and sharing that part of his life with them. He was a patriot.
He was a farmer and truck driver for most of his life after that. There wasn’t a road or town he hadn’t been to in the country. Traveling with him was always fun. He had a story for every location we went by or to. Whenever anyone went anywhere, the first call was always to Dad ‘The Human Atlas’ for directions and recommendations on the best places to get onion rings and milkshakes. He was the salt of the earth.
He loved his family fiercely leaving a legacy in 3 kids John, Mike, and DeeAnn, 8 grandchildren, Candace, Tyler, Samantha, Shelby, Jeffery, Garett, Taylor, and Abigail 11 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Sydnie, Orlando, Ryan, Greyson, Skylar, Clayton, Asher, Barrett, Jocelyn, and Harper and 4 great great grandchildren Adelyn, Hadley, Maddyn, and Giovanni.
His family was on his mind always, and where he wanted to be. Later in life he would ‘make the rounds’ between John and his family in Arkansas, DeeAnn and her family in Dallas, and Mike and his family in Houston. From family Christmas Cruises to Cozumel, Mexico, to walking around our neighborhoods for exercise to find the grandkids, Papa was here for it all. His eyes twinkled as he watched all the grandkids play. His stories, big booming laugh with accompanying knock on the table, and brilliant smile will be missed beyond measure. He was a good Dad and a great man.

Diane "Dicee" E. Derryberry - September 05, 1962 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Baxter Springs)
Obituary Preview: We’re heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Diane (Dicee) Derryberry on April 1st, 2024 at the age of 61. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter, wit and irreverence that belied a very tender and loving soul. Her life’s trail is scattered with priceless memories that will be forever treasured by everyone who spent any amount of time with her.
Dicee was born in Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1962 to Dean and Susie Derryberry, as the baby of this very young family, and one who could have won any beautiful baby contest world over! She graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1980 with a close circle of friends that would be with her throughout her lifetime. After high school, she enrolled at the University of Kansas, later venturing off to join her siblings and friends in Dallas, Texas where she made her home for over 30 years. In Dallas, Dicee’s quick mind and infectious spirit allowed her to flourish in the corporate world at Mary Kay and Dean Foods. In 2001 she brought her son, Alec Julian, into the world. There has never been a fiercer adoration or a greater dedication than that she has had for Alec. With Alec as the new focal point of her life, she continued her corporate work but being a mom became her real career.
In 2020, during the pandemic and after losing their dearly loved father, Dicee along with her older sister, Lesli, came back home to Baxter. Together they put down new roots and deepened their bonds both with their hometown and with each other. Dicee started working at Wolkar Drug where she found an amazing community of Baxterites and coworkers that quickly became her extended family. Her magnetic personality, humor, and quick wit brought joy to everyday life at the pharmacy and kept customers coming back.
Dicee was well known around Baxter for her beauty, her trademark rock n’ roll style, and her characteristic heels and lipstick. She had strong opinions and didn’t mince her words, but her love ran as deep as her convictions were strong. Dicee cared deeply for others - just as much for her neighbors as for her community and the world at large. She believed that everyone deserved a fair chance, and her actions and community involvement are a testament to that.
Dicee is preceded in death by her parents, Susie and Dean Derryberry, and her brother, Mike Derryberry. She leaves behind her son, Alec Ortega, sister, Lesli Derryberry (Saifi Ahmad), nieces Mel Ahmad (Elliott Shawd) and Alina Ahmad (Ariel Borensztein), and adored great niece Samara Shawd, as well as her loving cousins, aunts, and the extended Derryberry clan - many dear friends, both lifelong and newfound, and her precious pets. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Lindsay Ashe for adopting Pony, Dicee’s beloved dog and constant companion. Dicee was loved profoundly and was a shining light for all of us. Her absence will leave a deep void in our lives, one that will always remain impossible to fill.
