Mason L. Mileham - December 18, 2015 - April 19, 2022

Departed: 04/19/2022 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Mason Lee Mileham, born December 18, 2015, passed away peacefully Tuesday April 19, 2022, after an incredibly brave battle against an unforgiving disease. He is survived by his parents, Taylor and Ellen Mileham of Mount Vernon, IN; his grandparents, Kelli (John) Rohlman, Roger (Missy) Wade, Rick (Andrea) Mileham, and Lynda Mileham; his great-grandparents Judy (Joe) Winiger, Max (Dana) Dieterle, Sharon Schroeder, Doris Sanders; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, all who loved him dearly and will carry his spirit with them forever. Mason was an avid sports fan and enjoyed nothing more than cheering on his beloved Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers with his family, but could also be found at local events cheering on Mater Dei wrestling mat-side or sitting on the bench at a USI Eagles basketball game. He also enjoyed every precious day spent with all of his teachers and classmates at Saint Matthews School and every special afternoon with his Uncle Rick!
He lived every moment with an intensity few could match, squeezing in as much activity, conversation, and laughter as he could. In return, he received more love, more caring, and more adoration from more people in more places than most. Although his time with us was short, this child was deeply loved and it was an honor for all who witnessed the life and the fight of such a beautiful boy who was, in the end, too wonderful to keep in this world. He will be greatly missed. The Mileham family expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the family, friends and community who supported Mason’s journey through generous donations and service in all its forms. Extreme appreciation is felt for all the medical professionals at Riley Children’s Hospital, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, Deaconess Midtown Hospital Emergency Department, Deaconess Home Hospice, and Linda E. White Hospice House. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. Denning Family Funeral Home is overseeing the arrangements. The family asks for donations in lieu of flowers to: Riley Children’s Foundation Attn: Donna Fischer PO BOX 3356 Indianapolis, IN 46206-3356 Add in Check Memo: Mighty Mason Palliative Care Fund

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise yet meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website where it will be published. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online publications or personal websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their submission process, which may include email or online forms, as well as any specific requirements for content and formatting.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. You can store your self-written obituary with your important documents or share it with your loved ones.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or website. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals that include additional services like photo editing or online memorials. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may allow for corrections or updates within a certain timeframe. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting your obituary.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline for an obituary can vary depending on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately or within a few hours of submission. Print newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish an obituary.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased, making the tribute more engaging and memorable.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance, consider enlisting the help of a funeral home staff member or professional obituary writer. They can provide valuable assistance and ensure that your loved one receives a fitting tribute.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a cause that was important to them. Be sure to include the charity's name and any relevant details in the obituary.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com. Local libraries and genealogical societies may also have access to historical newspapers and records that can help you find what you're looking for.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary online. Be sure to cite the original source and respect any applicable copyright laws.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and emotion to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with their personality or spirit.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

If you discover errors or inaccuracies in a published obituary, contact the publication immediately and request corrections. They may issue a revised version or publish a correction notice.

Can I create a digital memorial or online tribute instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Online memorials and digital tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to honor loved ones. These platforms often offer features like photo galleries, guest books, and sharing capabilities that can help you celebrate their life.

What is the difference between a eulogy and an obituary?

A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered during a funeral or memorial service, typically focusing on personal anecdotes and memories. An obituary is a written notice that provides factual information about the deceased person's life.

Can I include information about the funeral service in an obituary?

Yes! In fact, it's common to include details about the funeral service, visitation hours, burial location, and other relevant information in an obituary so that friends and family know how to participate.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respectful after they pass away?

You can work with social media companies and online platforms to remove or memorialize your loved one's accounts. This helps maintain their dignity and prevents potential misuse of their online identity.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

If you're unsure about what information to include in an obituary, consider consulting with family members, friends, or a funeral home staff member for guidance. They can help you determine what details are most important and relevant.
