She also enjoyed gaming, having dinner with her family, and teaching her kids how to drive.

Wesley Charles Krohn - June 24, 1956 - July 14, 2024

Departed: 07/14/2024 (Newport News)
Obituary Preview: Wesley Charles Krohn Newport News, Virginia
Wesley Charles Krohn passed peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday morning, July 14, 2024, at his residence in Newport News, Virginia, with his wife at his side.
Wes was born June 24, 1956, in Des Moines, IA. Within a few years after his birth, the family moved to a farm near Greenfield, where they worked for the next 10 years. His work ethic developed from the tending of crops and livestock. His value of money was also punctuated in these years. His allowance consisted of the money made from collecting, processing, and delivering the excess eggs from the chickens they kept to the local Egg & Creamery depot each Saturday morning.
When the family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, Wesley took up a morning paper route with the Des Moines Register, something that was passed down through the brothers over the years. At one point, due to the attrition of other carriers, Wesley was delivering three different routes before breakfast and school 6-days a week. After school, he worked as the Team Trainer for the Valley High School Football and Wrestling Teams.
During high school and for a year later, Wesley worked for a local McDonald’s franchisee who owned 12 stores in the greater Des Moines area. In that time, he rose from being a general crewman to 1st Assistant Manager. Wesley developed a local training plan that he sold directly to the McDonald’s corporation and then enlisted in the Army.
During Wesley’s Enlisted Army Career, roughly the first half of his active-duty time, he rose from Private to Sergeant First Class, within 8-1/2 years. He was assigned to Germany and the US both twice. He worked as a shift cook, the NCO in charge of his tactical unit food service operation - twice, an assistant dining facility manager, an Enlisted Aide to a General Officer, a member of an Inspector General team, and as the Installation Food Service Supervisor.
While assigned to the Inspector General’s office in Germany, Wesley submitted a packet to transition to become a Warrant Officer – and it was accepted. As with his initial Food Service Specialist Course at Fort Lee, VA, as a Private, he finished at the top of his Warrant Officer Technical Certification Course. His career as a Warrant Officer spanned three assignments – two in the US and one, again, to Germany. As he had previously done as an NCO, Wesley used his skills and talents to make his corner of the Army a little bit better. While assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group in Fort Lewis, WA, he served as the Team Captain for the Fort Lewis Culinary Arts Team and took them to the All-Army competition at Fort Lee.
During the 10+ year period of his Army career as a Chief Warrant Officer, he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3), implemented ongoing Dining Facility competitions, ongoing Food Service Soldier and NCO competitions, provided support to over 100 Garrison and Tactical Dining Facilities, and functioned as the Theater Food Advisor during Operation Provide Comfort after the end of the first Gulf War, where he was responsible for the safe operation and food supply for over 3,000 US and 1500 Coalition soldiers as well as advising the UN Kurdish Repatriation effort concerning foods available that could be used for the refugees. His regular food service operations netted 1st Place US Army Europe level in the Field Kitchen, Small garrison, and Large Garrison categories.
His almost 30-year post-military, Army Contractor career was also quite impressive with many achievements and special assignments.
As a jack AND master of many trades, he was a member, founding member, and executive board member of several organizations over the years and had numerous affiliations and certifications in a variety of specialties (too many to remember or list). He was proud of his service as President of the Tidewater Branch of the International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA) for several years, during which time he also achieved his personal certification as Master Certified Food Executive (MCFE). He also had one of the longest active local businesses within Business Network International (BNI), 25+ years of The Krohn Group, Inc., providing merchant services to many businesses throughout the community.
Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family, who he encouraged to live a life dedicated to service to country: his wife Julie Krohn retired November 2023 after 40 years of civilian service, his son Brian Krohn serves as both a Federal Prison Chaplain and Army Reserve Chaplain, and his other son, Edward Krohn, currently serves in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program as a Medical Logistician Officer.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Junior Krohn and Opal Huff Krohn and his brother, Thomas Jay Krohn. Wes is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Julie Krohn of Newport News, VA and his twin sons the Reverend, CH (CPT) Brian Krohn and MAJ Edward “Ed” Krohn. Brian and his wife Nailibeth reside in Bryan, TX with their 7-month-old twins Brianna and Nathan, and Ed resides in Salt Lake City, UT. Wes is also survived by his brother Doug Krohn and wife Marla of Duluth, GA and their son Jonathan Krohn of Mexico City, MX; his baby brother Merle Krohn and his wife Jolene of Fort Collins, CO; two nieces; and other extended family.
Viewing will be Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 10:00-11:30 AM, followed by the funeral service 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, in the Denbigh Chapel at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23608. He will be laid to rest at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606 at 1:00 PM with full military honors.
