Og was born in Ashland on May20, 1941 to Dr. Robert and Jane Bogniard and lived in Ashland County most of his life. Following his high school graduation from Ashland in 1959, he enlisted in the US Marines and served for ten years, including two years in Vietnam. George F. Kettering - February 22, 1935 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Ashland)
Obituary Preview: ASHLAND – George F. Kettering, age 89, of Ashland, Ohio passed from this world to his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior on April 19, 2024 after a brief period of declining health. George was born on February 22, 1935 in Ashland, Ohio the third of six children of Warring and Beula (Stambaugh) Kettering. Having been raised on the family farm, George developed a love of animals and tractors. He passed these interests on to his grandsons and nephews, always willing to help with the stubborn steer that had to be trained as a 4-H project or an engine that needed repair. He demonstrated to many the money-saving skills of “fixing” things whether big or small, instead of discarding or replacing them.
George graduated from Ruggles Troy School in 1953, often quick to add, mischievously, that it was in no small part due to his father being on the school board. While in high school he was active in FFA, played basketball, and sang in the choir. He had a lifelong love of music and possessed a remarkable bass voice. A composer-in-residence at then Ashland College put to music a poem written by George’s mother, “A Parents’ Wedding Prayer”, specifically composed for his voice. He has shared this family blessing with siblings, children and grandchildren as well as others starting their married lives.
Being of draft age, but a conscientious objector, George joined Brethren Volunteer Service where he spent two years as a truck driver collecting and delivering relief supplies in the eastern US for shipments to help rebuild war-devastated Europe. Upon completion of his alternate service, he married the love of his life, Annabelle Keener, on July 7, 1956. Together, they had two daughters, Melody (Kettering) Barber and Jody (Kettering) Freer. His daughters feel blessed to have such godly and hardworking parents.
As a young man George had numerous jobs including working at the Nankin Elevator and Ashland Vault. Most of his work life was spent with the local foundries, F.E. Myers where he was involved in the startup of the new Castings Center, and Union Malleable, later U-Brand. He was a capable foundry man and foreman earning the respect of his coworkers while maintaining a strong Christian testimony. Upon the closure of U-Brand, George began a new career in the maintenance of rental properties at Bauer Management Realty. Upon retirement he continued to work on a volunteer basis for nearly 20 years as custodian at his home congregation, Maple Grove Church of the Brethren.
Faith was an integral part of George’s life. To many he was a mentor and authentic role model of a humble Christian man. He, along with wife Annabelle, led the youth group of Maple Grove for many years impacting generations of young people. George taught Sunday School, initially high schoolers later seniors, for most of his adult life. He and Annabelle were called to be lifelong deacons at Maple Grove and faithfully and actively served for over 60 years. George participated on many church committees, as well as led the church board. His love of music was a constant. He shared his gift of singing regularly and faithfully as a member of the church choir and on special occasions.
George is survived by his wife, Annabelle, and daughters, Melody of Newbury, Ohio and Jody (Scott) of Ashland. His grandchildren were a joy to him and Annabelle: Hannah (Barber) Moritz and Zachary and Benjamin Freer. All three share cherished memories including summers at “Camp Grandpa”. The next generation, George’s great-grandchildren, currently number seven: Oliver, Parker, Noah, Clara, Isaac, Sophie and Wesley, with an eighth being added in June of 2024. Also surviving are siblings Delbert Kettering of Polk, Marilyn (Kettering) Badger of Polk, Merlyn (Una) Kettering of Maryland, and Daniel (Donna) Kettering of Polk. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lorene (Kettering) Mills and her husband John Mills, his sister-in-law Betty Kettering, brother-in-law P. David Badger and son-in-law Robert Barber.
Friends and family are welcome to gather at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren Sunday, April 28, 2024 for visitation from 2pm – 5pm and on Monday, April 29, 2024 from 10am – 11am. A Celebration of the Life of George Kettering will follow beginning at 11am led by Pastor Steve Keib. After the funeral service, graveside committal will take place in the Maple Grove Cemetery followed by a fellowship meal at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brethren Care Village and Gentiva Hospice for their compassion and loving care of our dear George. Special thanks go out to Sheila, Erin, Tiffany, Sarah, and Robert who for a brief time became a part of our family.
