Demetrius "Jim" Andressakis - November 22, 1946 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Demetrius (Jim) Andressakis, 77, of Huntley, IL passed away on March 28, 2024. He was born November 22, 1946 in Galaxidi, Greece to Anargyros and Chrysoula. His father was a lighthouse keeper (a branch of the Greek Navy), as well as a fisherman. His mother lovingly raised him and his sister, Irini. She also acted as "first-mate" for all of the fishing activities that her husband engaged in. The family spent their summers at various lighthouses depending on where Anargyros was assigned. His mother was from a small seaside village and inherited land with olive orchards which the family harvested every fall to produce their own olive oil. Jim often scheduled his vacations in the fall to be there for olive picking. Even after he retired, he and Lois would go to help his sister and family during the olive harvest. Just like his father, Jim had a passion for fishing and a love of the sea. He continued in his father's footsteps when he inherited his father's fishing boat and nets.
Because of his love of the sea, he chose to serve in the Greek Navy. He later became a marine engineer working for the Onassis Shipping Company. While he was working in the Merchant Marine, his ship was docked in Aruba which is where he met his future wife, Lois. Jim eventually left the Merchant Marine and moved to Cleveland, OH. He and Lois were married December 28, 1973 and just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Jim began working at Ford Motor Company Cleveland Engine Plant while completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University. He worked his way up to supervisor before retiring in 2003.
Jim's love for the sea didn't end when he left the Merchant Marine. He carried that passion with him and eventually he and Lois bought a sailboat and spent much of their free time sailing around Lake Erie with their dog, Boomer.
Jim and Lois were thrilled to start a family. Their daughters, Chrisoula and Katherina, mean the world to them. One of the most important things to Jim was that his children embrace their Greek heritage. They learned the language, the dances and the traditions going to Greek school. They frequently spent their summers in Galaxidi where they experienced the culture, spent time with their family and fell in love with the sea. Jim set high expectations for his daughters and was very involved in their school and athletic activities.
In later years, he became equally involved with his grandchildren, Lily, Andrew and Lucas. In 2014, he (Papou) and Lois moved from Avon, OH to Huntley, IL where they were able to share in their grand childrens' special occasions, and be part of their daily lives. He enjoyed teaching them about stock market investing, practicing Greek with them, playing games with them, and taking them to train displays! He was so proud of them for their school and extracurricular accomplishments. The grandchildren even learned to present their report cards to Papou who gave them money for their good grades.
Although Jim and Lois loved vacationing in Greece, after retirement, they began yearly cruises as well. This took them all over the world from Iceland to Antarctica and China to the Caribbean which brought their lives full circle back to Aruba, the place their life together had begun.
Jim and Lois live in Del Webb's Sun City, Huntley, IL. Jim loved the beautiful community and activities there. He especially enjoyed the ponds and lakes and miles of walking trails. He could be found early mornings in the lodge gym with the "morning crew". He was also an active member of the Computer Club. However, what Jim will mostly be remembered for, is being the founder of the Sun City Greek/American Club.
Jim was very active and did not enjoy sitting still. This character trait is what led him to fulfill one of his lifelong dreams. At age 60, he ran and completed the Athens Marathon, earning his medal. Three years later, on the 100th anniversary of the first ever Athens Marathon, he ran the 10K portion of the course with his daughter Katy. Anything Jim had the ability to do himself, he did. He was a "jack of all trades". His skills ran the gamut from building doll houses and balance beams, to covered patios, sheds and sunrooms. He also loved gardening, building flower beds and landscaping. If something needed to be done for his family or friends, he would do it! No one could have asked for a better husband, father (baba), grandpa (papou) or friend. His love knew no bounds. Although he is no longer physically with us, his essence, his energy and his love endure for they are intertwined with ours in eternal companionship. May we find peace knowing that his spirit walks alongside each and every one of us!
Demetrius (Jim) was preceded in death by his parents, Anargyros and Chrysoula and sister-in-law, Marilyn. He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughters, Chrisoula and Katherina; son-in-law, Michael; grandchildren, Lillian, Andrew and Lucas; sister, Irini; brother-in-law, Thomas; sister-in-law, Judy; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation and prayer service (Trisagion) will be held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin, IL on Friday, April 12th from 3pm to 5:30pm.
To fulfill Jim's wishes, he will be flown back to his beloved village, Galaxidi, Greece for his funeral and burial on April 20th.

Despina Bezaitis - December 15, 1934 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Our loving mother and grandmother, Despina Bezaitis (nee Valavanis), 89, of Chicago passed away peacefully on March 14, 2024. She was born in Siderokastro, Greece, on December 15, 1934, to Panaiotis and Magdalene Valavanis.
Despina was a resilient woman who immigrated to the US to support her family. She met her husband John in 1963 in Chicago and they were married the following year. Over the course of her life, she maintained a warm home, a beautiful garden, and hosted parties full of food and music.
She loved to be busy, to play games, and to create and her children and grandchildren benefited from these traits. Each will forever remember walks in the Botanic Gardens, cooking with yiayia or enjoying the delicious results, watching her knit a beautiful blanket for a family member or for a newborn she’d never met.
She channeled ambition through her family members, always emphasizing the need to stay positive. Her support for her husband’s career and for her children’s growth was immutable. Her favorite role though truly was as a grandmother. She was enthusiastic to be summoned to help care for the grandchildren whether in Evanston, Illinois or in Portland, Oregon, and to receive them in her home which she did repeatedly for each and every one.
Despina will always be remembered for her warmth and generosity. Her life was organized around her family and closest friends. Her final years included a special relationship with her friend Vildana Hadzalic.
Over the course of her life, Despina worked as a lab technician and real estate agent and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, Illinois, and Holy Taxiarhai & St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Niles, Illinois.
Despina was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Bezaitis, and is survived by her daughter Maria (Jason) of Portland, Oregon, her son Andrew of Evanston, Illinois, and five grandchildren: Katherine Ann, Megan James, Theodore Andreas, John Andrew and Lucas Richard.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Botanic Gardens of Chicago (https://www.chicagobotanic.org/donate/tribute) where Despina spent so much time with her family members and caregivers. A visitation is scheduled for Saturday March 30, 2024 from 12pm-2pm at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Rand Rd., Mt. Prospect, Illinois 60056. Erma Anna Danner - June 29, 1929 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Erma Anna (Sippel) Danner, 94, passed away on December 19, 2023 at her home in Glenview, Illinois surrounded by family and loved ones. Erma was born on June 29, 1929 in St. Joe, WI to August Sippel and Isabella (Lefeber). She attended St. Mary Catholic School in Marytown through the 6th grade.
At the age of 16, Erma’s ‘Wanderlust’ and spirit of adventure led her to Glenview IL. Working as a nanny, a soda jerk, and then in a card factory, her strong work ethic allowed her to purchase a small mobile home and car. On May 27th 1950 Erma married Mahlon “Danny” Danner at the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenview, Illinois. Together they raised 5 children and lived next to the Glenview Naval Base, where Danny was stationed. For additional income Erma and Danny started the Twin County Landscaping. Over time an opportunity developed to clean out military housing for reassigned personnel. Salvaged items accumulated and the need for a storage facility was born. In 1967 they purchased a building in Grayslake, IL which would become their base of operations. In addition to selling items out of the Grayslake facility, weekly auctions were held with the whole family graduating from the Reisch Auction School, Mason City, Iowa. Future expansion of their business saw the purchasing of an old garage in Pipe, WI which would become the Pipe Auction Barn. After Danny’s passing, Erma, always resourceful, started driving school buses for the Glenview School District for a time. After the auction centers eventually were sold, Erma looked for other avenues to sell merchandise. She would regularly sell at swap meets, car shows, and flea markets throughout IL and WI. During the winter, Erma would travel to Florida and sell at a number of flea markets, such as Fruitland Park and the Florida Flywheelers Tractor Show. Until recently you could find Erma selling at the Rosemont, IL flea market. Her immediate family survivors include her four sons Timothy Danner, Dale Danner (friend Mary), Mark Danner (friend Lat), Jesse (Kelly) Danner, and Daughter Maxine (Bruce) Lasko. She is also blessed with seven grandchildren; Amanda (Geoff) Tickes, Ryan (Melanie) Danner, Victoria Lasco (friend Roger), William Danner (friend Brittany), Samantha Lasko (friend Dilland), Jack Danner, and Toby Danner. She is further survived by several siblings which include, Mary Anne (Howard) Meyer, and Dianne (Ronald) Reese, Donald (Helen) Sippel and Jean (Gary) Anderson. Erma also was Blessed with many nieces, nephews, and a large number of extended relatives. Erma was preceded in death by her husband Danny, parents Isabella and August Sippel, brother Harold, sisters Bernice (Simon Schaefer), Lillian (Herriges), Tharcilla (Matznick), and infant sister Lucille. The announcements and celebrations of Erma’s life will take place later this Spring in Marytown, WI. Arrangements by Demeros Funeral and Cremation Services. For information, please call 847-302-7176
