Edna B Crabtree - November 17, 1927 - June 20, 2022

Obituary Preview: Edna Bea Crabtree passed away peacefully at her home in Escalon on June 20, 2022 at the age of 94.  Edna was born the youngest of 16 children on November 17, 1927 to parents, Jesse and Florence Miller in Modesto.   She has been an Escalon resident since 1977.
After marrying her husband, Clinton Crabtree in 1947, the two went into business together, operating a construction company, building residential homes throughout Stanislaus and San Joaquin County.  Clinton and Edna raised their two sons in Salida, CA among many friends and family.  They spent a few years living and working in Colorado.  They enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing.  They spent many hours fishing for trophy sized trout in various lakes and rivers of California and trophy salmon and halibut during their visits to Alaska.   After retiring, the two enjoyed traveling in their motorhome.  They would drive to Alaska to visit her family every year and also would make trips is Missouri.  She enjoyed crocheting and jigsaw puzzles.  One of her biggest joys was to cook and bake for her family.  She will be remembered for her unfailing loyalty to her family, her unending patience and her sweet loving smile.
Edna leaves behind her sons, Lyle Crabtree (Jane) and Neil Crabtree (Deanna) and her grandchildren, Amanda Crabtree, Shelly Bennett and James Crabtree.  She is preceded in death by her husband Clinton and all of her siblings.  She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, she particularly remained very close with her niece, Iola Holmes.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Crabtree family.  A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Deegan Chapel in Escalon.  She will be laid to rest at Burwood Cemetery during a private family committal.  Remembrances may be made in Edna’s memory to Community Hospice.  The family would like to give a special thanks to Edna’s many caregivers, especially her grandson, Jim.  They helped her enjoy her last years comfortably in her home.

James Clyde Payne passed away at his home in Escalon, California on June 17th, 2022 at age 85. He was born in Prairie Grove, Arkansas on September 10, 1936.
James has been a resident of Escalon for 70 years. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1962. In 1959, James married the love of his life, Amelia Esther Payne, and the pair raised their daughter, Alicia. James served as a peace officer for 34 years, and he was a founding member of the Escalon Community Ambulance as well as a member of the Escalon Historical Society. James enjoyed the great outdoors, and he especially loved to travel with his family. James will be remembered for his dedication to serving Escalon, and he will be dearly missed by his friends, family and his Escalon community.
James is now reunited with his beloved wife of 62 years, Amelia Esther Payne, and his late daughter, Alicia Jan Sanderson. James is survived by his grandchildren, Cole Sanderson and Kara Sanderson; his sister, Louise Rusconi, along with many extended family and friends.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Payne family. A graveside service will take place at Burwood Cemetery in Escalon on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 10:00 AM.

Betty Lou Knecht - May 24, 1933 - June 12, 2022

Obituary Preview: Betty Lou Knecht, 89, lovingly known by her family as GG, was born Betty Kennedy on May 24, 1933, to Burt and Christina, in Oakland, CA.  She spent most of her childhood in Escalon, CA, when at the age of 15 she met her future husband Floyd Knecht.  They were married and moved to Riverbank to start their family, and later to Modesto where they spent the remainder of their lives.  Betty worked hard though out her entire life and valued   loyalty and attention to detail.  She worked for a time as a Dental Assistant, before her and Floyd opened Superior Stainless Manufacturing, in Manteca, CA, were they worked side by side until they sold the business in 1977.  They spent the next 30 years traveling, living their summers at their home in Canada, and touring the country in their motor home.  Betty was loved by all who knew her and lit up any room she entered.  She loved socializing and was an instant friend to all she met. As the matriarch of her family she was cherished by all,  especially her 6 great grandchildren, whom she proudly referred to as the jewels in her crown.  She loved side by side with Floyd until his passing in 2013.  After his passing she continued to travel, enjoying meeting new people and seeing the beauties of the world.  She passed peacefully in her home in Modesto on June 12, 2022.  On Monday she will be laid to rest next to her husband in the same ground in Escalon she played on as a child. Betty is survived by her daughter, Toni Spradlin of Modesto, and her two granddaughters, Amber Brigham (Cameron) of Atwater, and Brittney Gonzalez (Edgar) of Modesto, along with her six great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Floyd Knecht, her brother Buddy Kennedy, and her parents Burt and Christina Kennedy.   Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Knecht family.  A visitation is scheduled on Monday, June 20, 2022, at 10:00 AM, at Deegan Funeral Chapel, followed by services at 11:00 AM.  Internment will follow at Burwood Cemetery, also in Escalon.

Obituary Preview: Lee Van Wyk, 81, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022 in Hughson, CA.  Lee was born on Dec 27, 1940 in Modesto to parents, Cornelius and Elizabeth Van Wyk.  Lee has been a resident of Denair for the past 31 years.
Lee attended Escalon High School where he excelled at several sports and was later named Block E President.  After graduating, Lee was a successful business owner for several years of Dutch Pride Dairy.  He served as a board member at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Concord and was president of a car club in Escalon.  Most recently he was a devout member of Calvary Baptist Church in Turlock.  His service to the Lord was always very important to him.  Lee will be remembered for his kind soul and his ability to make friends with everyone.  He was a humble man that was so proud of his Dutch heritage.
Lee leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Janice Van Wyk, his children, David Van Wyk, Becky Alvarez (Derrick) and Heidi Celentano (Joe), his grandchildren, Megan, Mikayla, Serafina, Libby and Dominic.  Lee also leaves behind his sisters, Ethel, Jeanette and Louise.  Lee is preceded in death by his sister, Clara.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Van Wyk family.  A graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 7th at 10 am at Burwood Cemetery in Escalon.  Remembrances in Lee’s name may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Turlock.

Richard was born January 8, 1947 and adopted by his loving parents, Edgar and Jetty Hartgrove the very next day, in Weatherford, Texas. Richard and his family made the move to California and resided in Escalon where he attended and graduated from Escalon High School. After graduating, Richard enlisted in the United States Army and served 3 years. In Richard’s later years, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and lived life to the fullest. He made many friends being a part of the Escalon Senior Fun Bunch and exercised at the Escalon Community Center.
Richard is survived by his mother, Jetty Hartgrove; brother, Robert Hartgrove; children, Shawn (Andrea) Hartgrove and Ron Hulstine; grandchild, Gage. He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Hartgrove and his late ex-wife, Francis Hartgrove. Noel was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the San Francisco Giant’s and the 49’ers, which him and his son, Xavier shared a special bond watching and attending those sporting events. Noel had a passion for tattoos and the art that went into each design. He also enjoyed raising his Doberman Pinchers. Noel is survived by his son, Xavier Bermudez; stepson, Carlos Rodriguez, Jr. He is also survived by his sister’s, Sylvia Norberg and Cindy Bermudez. Obituary Preview: Tribute to Dad, Mateus Diniz Victoria (Vitoria)
Mateus passed away at his residence in Escalon, California on May 10, 2022 due to complications of congestive heart failure. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Mateus D Victoria (Vitoria) was born in Feteira, Terceira Azores on November 3, 1935 to Joao Machado Vitoria and Faustina Candida Diniz Vitoria. From a young age he worked on the family farm with his siblings and was nurtured and taught the principles of hard work, diligence, honesty, fairness, prayer and Christian values. He was a loving role model to our family and left a legacy for his family and friends.
Mateus entered military service in 1956. After his discharge in 1960 he met the love of his life, Romualda, his wife of 60 years. In 1970 they immigrated to the United States with their first-born son, Luis, and established their home in California’s Central Valley, where Mateus worked at several locations in the dairy industry. In 1974, they welcomed their second son, Daniel. In 1989, Mateus and Romualda purchased the family farm in Escalon, California and eventually became almond farmers. Mateus had a love for gardening and farming and would spend hours maintaining both the garden and the farm. Living a humble and old school way of life, Mateus and Romualda, through hard work and personal sacrifices, achieved the American dream and were proud to have become American citizens.
Mateus is proceeded in death by his parents, and siblings Joao Vitoria, Antonio Vitoria, Francisco Vitoria and Maria de Esperanza  Sozinho.
He is survived by his loving wife Romualda, his devoted sons Luis (Elizabeth) and Daniel, and his beloved grandchildren Sabrina, Matthew and Brooke. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Janice Ann Alcantor peacefully passed away in the presence of her loving husband and family April 26, 2022 at the age of 79. She was born January 18, 1943 to George and Emily Goularte in Hayward, CA. Janice was very active in the Escalon Community, she was the past President of Y.L.I., Van Allen 4-H Community Leader and El Portal Bowling League Secretary just to name a few. Janice was employed with Escalon Packers for 28 years as a Labtech Supervisor. She was the glue that held the family together, an excellent baker that had everyone asking for another piece, the NASCAR fanatic who rooted for #24 & #5 hollering at the T.V. on race days, the loving wife and partner for 60 years and the best and most fun loving grandma around. Janice was my best friend, amazing wife, travel partner and my everything. Life will not be the same without her as she left an empty spot in my heart. The memories we created will keep me going, but she will always be with me. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life. She loved that they were still small enough to hug, squeeze and kiss. Charlotte Gayle Johnson - May 12, 1938 - April 23, 2022

Obituary Preview: On the morning of April 23, 2022, our loving sister, aunt, sister-in-law and friend, Charlotte “Char” Gayle (Selby) Johnson, was called home to eternally be with her husband of 53 years, Richard “Dick” Johnson. Charlotte, 83, was born in Merced, CA on May 12, 1938, and is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Geraldine Selby. She spent her younger years in Escalon working on the family dairy, graduating from Escalon High School, and attending Modesto JC and Fresno State. Upon Richard’s return from his service in the US Air Force, Char got to marry the love of her life in 1968. They moved to the Bay Area where she would continue to work in accounting and Dick for United Airlines. They spent 35 years there until their retirement. After that, they returned to Escalon to enjoy their next phase of life. They got back to country living where they would have pasture, raise her beloved cattle, and be closer to family. Charlotte loved traveling. She and Richard traveled across the United States and visited many countries together. She also loved to sell Christmas Around the World. Another of her favorite things was spending time with her family and friends, especially around the holidays. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she would annually host a Christmas Open House where friends and family gathered together to visit and celebrate. Charlotte, with her wonderful laugh and smile, will always be remembered and truly missed by all of her family and friends. Preceded in death by her older brothers, Ronald and Virgil Selby. Survived by her brother, Chuck (Lou) Selby; sister-in-law’s, RuthAnn (Ron) Cohagan, Jackie Johnson, Mayetta Selby, and Joyce Selby; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; along with special family friends, Kevin and Conner Crozier.  Charlotte will be honored at a graveside service on May 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 East River Road in Escalon.
