George Wayne Scott - March 18, 1952 - December 29, 2020

Departed: 12/29/2020 (Decatur)
Obituary Preview: George “Wayne” Scott, born on March 18, 1952, left this earth on December 29th at the age of 68.
Wayne was a Tennessee native that loved his beautiful state. He was a proud member of the Carpenters Local Union 74 where he made lifelong friends. If he wasn’t building something, you would most likely find him outdoors enjoying nature. A hunter and fisherman that recently got his “deer of a lifetime”. A history buff that could rival the Smithsonian on knowledge. His love of the local Native American culture and history was a lifelong passion. He was always planning his next adventure to explore the country that he loved so much. In recent years, he and his brother John visited several National Parks including Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park and Glacier National Park.  He was the middle child of five. The Scott family can best be described as close knit and filled with love and respect. He was an incredible father and grandfather. His girls will never be able to fill the void that the passing of such an amazing man has created. He was their rock.
To know Wayne was to love him. The world was a better place because he was in it.
He was preceded in death by his cherished father and mother: Roy Edwin Scott and Una Womac Scott.
He is survived by his siblings: Anne Scott Fisher, Roy (Mary) Scott, John Scott and Joyce (Jim) Scott Allen; Nieces: Jennifer (Jacob) Grammer and Jordan (Buddy) Scott Suttles; Nephews: Chris (Jeannie) Fisher, Tim (Shan) Fisher, Daniel (Misty) Allen and JT (Katie) Allen.
He left behind his two beloved daughters: Lynnsey Scott Appelhans and Andrea (Roger) Holliday; grandchildren: Collins Appelhans, Hayden Appelhans, Jocelyn Holliday and Amelia Holliday that brought him great joy.
There will be formal services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial service arrangements, and any charitable donations in their memory.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial service arrangements, burial or cremation details, and any charitable donations in their memory.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides more information about the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately to request a correction. They may be able to issue a revised version or publish a correction notice.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to take control of how they're remembered and ensure accuracy. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider seeking help from a funeral home or professional writer who specializes in obituaries. They can provide guidance and support during this difficult time.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish within hours or days, while others may take longer due to production schedules or editorial processes.
