Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and details about their surviving family members. You may also want to include information about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that includes additional information about the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or via email, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, keep in mind that your family may still need to review and edit the final version.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the tribute. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer more affordable options.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary for free or at a low cost. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, photo galleries, and memorial candles.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. For traditional newspapers, it may take several days or even weeks for the obituary to appear in print. Online platforms usually allow for faster publication times.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make significant changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to report the mistake. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.
