Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help families process their grief and provide closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary should include the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and details about their life, such as occupation, hobbies, and surviving family members. You may also want to include information about memorial services or donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Typically, it should be around 100-200 words, but some online platforms may allow for longer tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos or create a photo gallery to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to share memories and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or website. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to several hundred dollars, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humor or personal stories can make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?
