Devicius Jermael Burley - June 09, 1985 - December 11, 2021

Departed: 12/11/2021 (Warrenton)
Obituary Preview: Celebrating the Life of Devicius J. Burley
A beautiful soul was born on Sunday June 9, 1985 to Sandra R. Allen and Cecil W. Burley. As a baby, he was nurtured by his aunt Gurry Hatcher who was his daily babysitter for the first five years of life, and who loved and spoiled him as her own. During that time, he was affectionately given the nickname “Rocky” because of his chubby arms that looked like little muscles.
Being raised in a family rooted in faith, Devicius accepted Christ early on and joined Greenwood Baptist Church, where he began a lifelong relationship with the Lord. He attended the Warren County school system up to the age of twelve, until moving to the metro Atlanta area where he attended Lilburn Middle School, South Gwinnett High School and graduated from Loganville Christian Academy. He went on to attend Fort Valley State College, but delayed finishing his degree program. His adult career was as a driver; several years at a moving company and the majority at an oil company. He loved driving as a profession because it gave him the opportunity to follow the spirit within him that enjoyed going to new places and interacting with different people. That same Spirit of kindness and helping was part of what drew others to him and allowed him to speak God’s word into their lives. He was one that sought after God, allowed humility and love to define him and believed in planting the seed (the Word), knowing that God will bring the increase. Part of his legacy will be the way that he ministered to people, just by being himself. He had a quiet patience, a listening ear and responded with an open and encouraging heart. After finding out that his brother passed away from a heart related issue, Jared stated “his heart was just too big for this world alone.”
When it was time to relax, one of his favorite ways was by vacationing at the beach. He was also a big sports fan, with Georgia Bulldogs and Carolina Panthers (good times and bad) as his favorite teams. He has more items engraved with the Panthers logo than you should have to count. He’s enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, barbecuing and of course watching football. The most adventurous part of him led him to experience skydiving; with parasailing and flying lessons as his next thrills to try.
During the long time union with Marty, they were blessed to be given the gift of a daughter. The happiest moment of his life was when God allowed him and Marty to bring their precious daughter Evelyn Grace into this world. She is the love of his life and fatherhood was his greatest joy. Spending time with his baby girl at the zoo, the beach, amusement parks, painting, having tea parties, playing in the snow, wrestling and the innumerable other daddy-daughter moments for the past six years, delighted his heart. The bond between a father and his daughter is unbreakable. More recently, he was blessed to meet the woman he intended to marry, Jennifer, who was drawn to the word of God that he spoke into her life. Their time together may have been cut short, but the impact of his discipleship remains. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and lived his life with a mindset to help others when and where he could.
He was preceded in death by pieces of his heart, loving grandparents Willie James and Josephine Allen and Willie West and Marian Burley. Also, by aunts and uncles, Willie Ruth Brown, Sylvester Burley and Willie Burley.
His memories and legacy will live on in the lives of:  his parents Sandra Allen Ivey and Cecil Burley; the greatest love of his life, daughter Evelyn Grace; brothers Jared Ivey, Marquez Burley and Malik Burley; his fiancé Jennifer Hardrick; great aunts and uncles Rosalind (Terry) Engram and Ophelia (Charles) Berry; aunts and uncles Patricia (Cecil) Threat, Michael Allen, Melvin (LaToya) Allen, Kathy (Rev. Freddie) Neal, Gurry Hatcher, Isabelle Brown, Annie Johnson, Patsy White and Bobbie Bisbee; cousins who were more like a sister and a brother, Erica Allen Love and Christopher Threat; nieces, nephews, many other beloved cousins, family and friends. www.dawsonsmortuary.com Services entrusted to Dawson’s Mortuary ~98 Hopgood St. Warrenton, GA

Lillian Butts Wright - November 11, 1936 - November 27, 2021

Departed: 11/27/2021 (Warrenton)
Obituary Preview: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished by course, I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:6-7 Lillian Butts Wright transitioned from earth to heaven to sit at the right hand of Jesus on Saturday, November 27, 2021. She was eighty-five. God touched her hand and said, “child come on home to rest.”
She was born November 11, 1936, in Baldwin County, GA. Lillian was the youngest of eleven children of the late Lila Macklin Butts (1896 - 1978) and the late Tullie Butts, Sr. (1892 - 1977), both native residents of Hancock County.
Although her siblings called their sister Lillian, only her daddy called her “Sugar”. The name suited her to perfection as she was genuinely one of the sweetest people on earth.
Lillian retired from Central State Hospital, where she was employed as a Principal Healthcare Technician with thirty-four years of service.
Lillian loved her family, but most of all she loved God. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Adored by neighbors and family friends, she was known as a quiet, good, peaceful neighbor.
For more than ten years, she served as guardian and caretaker for her oldest sister, Vanglee Butts Moore, and on many occasions, she would travel to Detroit, MI to help care for her sister, Carrie Butts-Williams Anderson. Her sister, Georgia Butts Arnold, while living nearby, battled an illness in her later life, and Lillian often cooked her meals and cared for her.
At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was a member of Vaughn Chapel Baptist Church for over fifty years. Church played a huge part in Lillian’s life. She remained active as a Deaconess, serving in the Benevolent Club until 2015, when her health declined. In attendance since early childhood, she witnessed the following pastors preside: Rev. Hudson (1929-1959), Rev. JJ Jordan (1959 - 1976), Rev. Nehemiah Collins (1976 - 2006), and Rev. Tony Fraley to present. Her passion was for the church to create its own cemetery.
Believing that family was God’s greatest gift to mankind, Lillian married the late Edward Wright, Sr. on December 26, 1951, and they had three children, Edward Jr., Joyce, and Marvin.
Lillian was predeceased by her four sisters, Vanglee Butt Moore (1915-2008), Georgia Butts Arnold (1923 - 2015), Carrie Butts-Williams Anderson (1930 - 2014), and Cora Butts Rozier (1934 - 2018); her six brothers, Sollie Butts (1918 - 2016), Henry Butts (1916 - 2006), Tullie Butts, Jr. (1921 - 1980), Willie Butts (1925 - 1989), Charlie Butts (1927 - 1985), and Elijah Butts (1932 - 1978).
On Saturday, November 27, 2021, Lillian peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal life with her devoted children by her side.

Ruby’s father was the cook on a tugboat and his job took the family to Bainbridge, Georgia where Ruby attended Hutto Elementary until the third grade. The family then moved to Selma, Alabama where she matriculated from third to seventh grade. While there, she joined Brown Chapel AME church when she was eight years old.
The family moved to Columbus, Georgia in 1936.  There she graduated from Spencer High School in 1940.  After high school, she worked a year to earn money to attend college. She moved to Sparta, Ga and began work as a Home Demonstration Agent. Here she met and married James Monroe Clayton in 1945. To this union was born their son, James M. Clayton, Jr. and their daughter, Jennis Rose Clayton Walls.  She joined her husband at Macedonia Baptist Church where her children were raised to be servants of God. She was a dutiful, faithful and devoted worker serving as a Deaconess. She remained active in her church until her health prevented her from doing so.
The family lived in Sparta, Georgia where she later became a school teacher in the Hancock County School system. She taught elementary education and later special education until she retired. During her teaching tenure, she expanded her knowledge and credentials at Fort Valley State College, Savannah State University, Temple University, Augusta College, and Georgia College State University.

She leaves to celebrate and honor her life: her son James Monroe Clayton, Jr. (Dollie) of Atlanta, Georgia and her daughter Jennis Rose Clayton Walls (Ulysses) of Durham, North Carolina.  To cherish her memory, she leaves four grandchildren LaVenettra Walls Reaves (Derrick) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jamie Walls Steadman (Michael) of Columbia South Carolina, Ulysses Walls, III (Bahati) of Houston, Texas and Jamon William Clayton of Arlington, Texas. Ruby C. Clayton was full of life and was always "on the move".  She had a purse and jewelry for every occasion and always carried herself with grace, class, and style.  She believed that being active was the key to a full and abundant life and that God should always be her guide.
Mrs. Ruby will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church, her Masonic and Shriner brothers, as well as numerous OES, Daughters of Isis, and Golden Circle sisters. She leaves behind a legacy of Service and Love. www.dawsonsmortuay.com Services entrusted to Dawson’s Mortuary ~98 Hopgood St. Warrenton, GA

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website, by email, or by visiting their office in person. Be sure to check their guidelines for submission deadlines and formatting requirements.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a unique opportunity to tell your own story and leave a lasting legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of a person's passing, while an obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and other details.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include humorous anecdotes or quotes that reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or discounts for online postings.
