Obituary Preview: Edward M. Lieber (Ed, Eddie, Eddie Spaghetti ), 87, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, January 6, at Hospice’s Elizabeth House. Ed was a loving husband to Vicky Lieber for 23 years.
He was a vital man, full of life and humor. Friends and family alike adored him for his wonderful ways. He will be sorely missed by many, but he will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was very handy and loved working in his well-equipped workshop.
He was a fix-it man, not only for things that needed repairing, but also for human situations.
He owned 3 Stride-Rite shoe stores in Worcester, MA, and loved delighting the children he fitted with his making believe he was “screwing on” their shoes plus many other tricks that kept his young customers laughing. He loved all cars and especially enjoyed his 1929 Model A Ford, driving it around town with a big smile and a toot of the horn that sounded its name, “Aooga”!
As he worked on planes when he was in the army during the Korean War, he developed a love of planes, even knowing a plane just by its sound.
He was married to his first wife, Arline, for 43 years, and is survived by his 4 children, their spouses and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He met Vicky at a Bereavement Group, which resulted in them sharing their common stories. Love soon blossomed and this resulted in a wonderful marriage full of good times, love and humor for 23 years. They enjoyed 8 years of living in Clearwater and eventually moved to Hendersonville, NC, where they happily resided for 15 years.
Thankfully he was able to enjoy a full life, which included an abundance of love, joy, peace and contentment.

Sandra Zucker - June 10, 1932 - November 11, 2019

Departed: 11/11/2019 (Clearwater)
Obituary Preview: Sandra "Sandy" Zucker, 87, of Belleair Beach, Florida passed away on November 11, 2019. In an age when women were expected to be good wives and mothers, she was both but also a pioneer in the field of mathematics, computer technology and software engineering. She had a kind and tender heart, remembered by all as a sweet, generous, loving woman who went out of her way to make everyone around her happy.
She graduated from Brooklyn College, the only female mathematician in her class, and went on to attain a masters degree from NYU. She was one of the first computer programmers, starting with one of the very first computers, a room-sized device called UNIVAC-I. Sandy went on to work for a series of computer companies, including Burroughs, where she was promoted to software manager and headed the team that created the still-in-use SWIFT international banking system. She eventually moved to General Electric Aerospace Division where she was able to work on many, mostly top secret projects for the United States with her husband, Arthur Zucker. Technically "rocket scientists," they remained married for nearly 65 years until Arthur's death in 2017.
At the time of her passing, Sandy was working on her autobiography. This is from the introduction: "I was blessed with a life that included everything good - a great and loving family, interesting work, a loving husband, and wonderful children and grandchildren. There were no great tragedies and I was able to achieve everything I wanted. If I had my life to live over, I probably would not change a thing." She is survived by her son, Stephen Zucker, her daughter, Miriam "Mickey" Zucker, grandchildren (in order of age): Jacob Moore, Danielle Zucker, Adina Zucker, Koby Moore and Carly Moore as well as a brother, Henry Halpern. She would also want us to mention her dog, Sam.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday November 19 at Sarasota National Cemetery 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241 with Rabbi Ari Shapiro officiating.

Catherine Curry - May 28, 1932 - November 02, 2019

Departed: 11/02/2019 (Clearwater)
Obituary Preview: Catherine B. Curry (LaRuffa) passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family at the age of 87 on November 2, 2019.
Catherine would be the first to tell you she had a blessed life filled with family, friends, love, laughter, happiness and strength in the face of hardship. Catherine loved family, food and fun and brought those things together countless times for Sunday dinners and family gatherings at her home. Catherine was an amazing cook, from pasta and homemade sauce to corned beef and cabbage. She also was a gracious host who opened her home to her children’s friends and their friends’ friends, for that matter. Thanksgiving Day dinner table conversations went down in family folklore. Christmas Eve and St. Patrick’s Day were legendary. A St. Patrick’s Day Party in suburban Largo, Florida would end with a parade of Italian-American sisters from New York marching around a swimming pool to Frank Sinatra music.
Catherine was born on May 28, 1932 in Oyster Bay, New York to Frank and Angelina LaRuffa, Italian immigrants who came to America to make a better life for themselves and their children. Catherine was the third-youngest of 11 children in a large but tight-knit family. After graduating high school, Catherine went on to work in the benefits and insurance field, ultimately meeting her future husband at the Equitable insurance company in Manhattan.
In 1959, Catherine married George Curry Jr. (d 1991). Catherine and George settled in Jamaica, New York and were blessed with 5 children: George, Cathleen, Rosemary, Angela and Christopher.
Catherine and her husband George enjoyed spending time with their close friends from the Knights of Columbus Morris Park Council 566 as well as participating in activities at their parish of Our Lady of the Cenacle.
In 1978, George and Catherine moved the family to Florida so George could take a new position in his career with the Department of Defense. They made new friends in Florida, but never lost those New York ties. Family and friends from New York visited on frequent vacations, with Catherine’s brother, Joe, and several of her sisters eventually moving to Florida part of the year. Catherine, George and their children also visited New York frequently on vacations to see family and friends.
Together, they shared several milestones in their children’s lives — graduations, their daughter Rosemary’s wedding and the birth of their first two grandchildren.
In August of 1991, George died in a car crash while he and Catherine were returning from dropping their son Christopher off to begin college at the University of Notre Dame. Catherine lost the love of her life, but the day also delivered a great blessing when Catherine’s children and family did not lose her. After George’s passing, Catherine proved herself — at five feet tall and roughly 100 pounds — to be one of the toughest people you will ever meet. A pillar of strength for her family, Catherine always cherished George in her heart and memories while also living her life to the fullest. In the years since he passed, she saw three more of her children marry and watched her grandchildren grow. She loved family outings — listening to music at Irish pubs, rooting on the Tampa Bay Rays, winning at the horse track and visiting Disney World.
She also got together with her New York family frequently on vacations and at the weddings of several beloved nieces and nephews. At a family wedding reception, Catherine and her sisters were a sight to behold. They danced for hours, smoked cigars and exchanged volleys of cheers back and forth from the tables where they were seated. Catherine traveled the country and the world from Vegas to Venice, Italy, often accompanied by her sisters or her daughter, Angela. A devout Catholic and a member of St. Catherine of Siena parish in Largo, Catherine found strength in her faith. She traveled to the Vatican and the Holy Land. In 2015, Catherine traveled to Philadelphia with her daughter Cathleen and granddaughter Sofia for Pope Francis’ visit to the United States.
Catherine leaves behind 4 sisters Marian, Louise, Angelina and Frances and numerous beloved nieces and nephews as well as her cherished children, son George (Ellen), daughter Cathleen, daughter Rosemary (Chris), daughter Angela (d. Tim), son Christopher (Lashonda) and nine grandchildren Mary, Elizabeth, George, Matthew, Sarah, Sofia, Rose, Emily and Michael.
