Dr. Thomas M Hall - March 24, 1936 - April 20, 2021

Departed: 04/20/2021 (Cincinnati)
Obituary Preview: A long, long time ago, in the land of Detroit, Michigan, Thomas Maybee Hall was born to Dr. G.W. Clarence Hall and Loretta Mae Hall (nee. Baldwin) on the 24th day of March in 1936. He was born in to a family with an older sister, Jean, an older brother, Rene and would soon be joined by a younger sister named, Jane.
Growing up, little Tommy knew no stranger and would carry out daily visitation on his tricycle. His patient mother was well-known by the principal and faculty of his elementary school as she attended as often as he did. Tommy never started a fight but always finished them. He could not care less about school and would prefer to focus on sports instead. A great example of his lack of commitment to his studies is Tom’s response to his father’s question on the following report card notation: “Tommy is not dependable”. Little Tommy quickly replied to his father, “It means she doesn’t depend on me and I don’t depend on her”. But, it wasn’t too long in Tommy’s life that he saw the error of his sinful ways and at the age of nine, he gave not only his heart but his life in service to the Lord.
Upon graduating early from Royal Oak High School, young Tom Hall took a bus and a few dollars in his pocket to pursue studies at Bob Jones University – it was there God showed him what He wanted Tom to do with his life: to be a pastor who cares for people.
Shortly after Tom completed his studies at Bob Jones University he took his first post as a pastor with the United Brethren Church in Birmingham, Michigan. During his early years as pastor at various churches throughout Michigan, Tom completed his graduate studies where he earned a Masters in Divinity from Midwestern Baptist College in Pontiac, Michigan, Doctorate in Theology.
After defecting to the Buckeye state, Tom ended up at Westwood Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon leaving the pastorate for a few years, Tom led a successful singles ministry out of Grace Baptist Church in Middletown, Ohio. A short time later though, God decided that Tom was not finished pastoring and called him to lead Harvest Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio where he stayed until he retired after 22 years. Altogether, Tom had been in the ministry for over 50 years – but God still wasn’t finished with him! In his retirement, Tom served as a Sunday school teacher at Faith Fellowship Community Church, also in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Betty “the Boss” (nee. Furnas), his adoring children: Jean Michelle (Robert Stewart, Jr.), Susan Jennifer “Halsey” (Charles Cruies), Thomas Maybee, Jr., Stephanie Jane (Timothy McLaughlin) and Andrea Melissa (Gregory Stockelman). Tom was blessed with eleven grandchildren (with three already in Heaven) and nine great grandchildren. While Tom will be missed here on earth, his words of wit and wisdom will live forever in our hearts: You know what you do when you assume, don’t you?
Well, we’ll let you figure it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant details.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information, write, and edit the obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. Some newspapers may also accept photos for print publication. Photos can help personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact their obituary department directly. They'll provide guidance on word count, formatting, and submission deadlines. Be prepared to provide detailed information about the deceased and payment for the publication fee.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a basic notice. Additional features like photos or longer notices may incur extra fees.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, edits can be made to an online obituary after publication. However, printed newspapers typically have strict deadlines and limited opportunities for corrections. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary for publication.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to an obituary and help capture the essence of the deceased. Choose something that resonates with their personality, interests, or faith.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral or memorial service private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. This allows you to share news of the passing while maintaining privacy for your family.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. This information can be included in the obituary along with details about the chosen charity.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately. They'll guide you through their correction process and work to rectify any mistakes as quickly as possible.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, you may want to republish an obituary on significant dates like birthdays or anniversaries. Check with the original publisher or online platform to see if they offer this service or can provide guidance on how to do so.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the person's name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed notice that includes biographical information and often shares stories about the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber affairs. Including humor or heartwarming anecdotes can help celebrate the person's life and make the notice more engaging for readers.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy when writing an obituary, verify facts with multiple sources whenever possible. Double-check dates, names, and spellings to avoid errors. It's also a good idea to have someone review your draft before submission.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to control their narrative and spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

If you're finding it challenging to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or professional writer who specializes in crafting compassionate and meaningful notices.

Some online platforms allow you to include links or social media handles in an online obituary. This can be useful for sharing additional information about the deceased or connecting with others who want to pay their respects.

How do I request corrections or changes after publication?

If you need to request corrections or changes after publication, contact the newspaper or online platform directly. They'll guide you through their process for making updates and corrections as quickly as possible.

Can I use an online template or generator for writing an obituary?

Yes! There are many online templates and generators available that can help guide you through the process of writing an obituary. These tools can save time and provide structure for your notice.

What if I want to publish multiple versions of an obituary?

In some cases, you may want to publish multiple versions of an obituary – for example, one in a local newspaper and another on a national online platform. Be sure to tailor each version according to the specific publication's guidelines and audience.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including sensitive information like cause of death or personal struggles in an obituary, consider consulting with family members or close friends before publication. Remember that discretion is key when sharing personal details about someone who has passed away.
