Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Lawhorn, daughter of the late Rose Bell Prior and the late Reverend Glennie Prior, Sr., was born April 24, 1936 in Georgetown, South Carolina. She departed this life on April 30, 2024 at 2:15 a.m. in Rochester, New York.

Elizabeth was affectionately called “Bet” or “Liz” by family and friends. At an early age she joined the Chester Hill Baptist Church in Georgetown, South Carolina, where her father was a minister. After relocating to Rochester, New York, Elizabeth became a member of the Mount Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church established a few years earlier in 1958 by its visionary founder, Reverend Raymond R. Williams.

As a faithful servant for more than sixty years, Elizabeth held the position of Financial Secretary during the early years of the Church. She also served as the second longest tenure as President of the R.R.W. Choir (formerly the Senior Choir).

Elizabeth was united in holy matrimony to the late Fred Lawhorn, Jr, and from this union was blessed with one daughter. She worked at PRN Healthcare (formerly George Heisel National Ambulance and Healthcare) for many years because taking care of people was her passion.

Her memories will be cherished by her daughter, Reather Lawhorn Patton and son-in-law Michael J. Patton of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She will be missed tremendously by her brothers and sisters: Ms. Evelyn Prior, deceased; Mrs. Ethel Reed, deceased; Mr. Glennie Prior, Jr. (late Elsie); Mrs. Carolyn Lawhorn (late Norman); Mr. George Prior (Dorothy) all of Rochester, New York. Mr. Elone Prior, deceased; Mr. Titus Prior (Vera); Mrs. Mary Holmes (late Roscoe) all of Georgetown, South Carolina. She also leaves to mourn a host nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Bessie “Frances” Jackson, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning, April 22nd, 2024. She was born August 30th, 1932 to Joseph and Hester Curry in Richmond, Virginia where she graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School in 1952 and Virginia Union University in 1956 with a degree in teaching.

Frances migrated to Rochester, NY in the late 1950s at a time when the Rochester City School District was recruiting black school teachers from the south. She worked at both #9 School and #6 Schools in Rochester’s toughest neighborhoods. She taught for 36 years and touched the lives of over 1,000 students throughout her career. Frances was always caring and devoted to her students. She took an active interest in their lives and the lives of their families.

Once she was settled in Rochester she joined the First Church of God where she remained an active member for 50+ years up to the time she became ill. She was a devoted choir member who loved to sing and would be remembered for her lovely soprano singing voice. She started a tutoring program at First Church and was also a part of the Mother Board. Frances had a great love for the National Association of the Church of God. In particular, the work and ministry of West Middlesex was very important to her. She worked as a youth counselor in her younger years and always looked forward to attending the camp meetings where she loved the preaching and singing on the West Middlesex campground.

Frances is pre-deceased by her parents, Joseph and Hester Curry, and her sister Charlotte White. She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Marks of Richmond, Virginia, one daughter, Kimberly DeLardge (Roland), one grandson, Blake DeLardge, devoted nephew, Charles Curry Sr., niece, Paula Williams, nephews, Paul Marks Jr, Rico Marks, Eric Marks, loving cousin, Loretta Strickland and a host of extended family and friends.

Throughout her life, Frances was known for her unwavering kindness, generosity, and compassion. She had a warm, vibrant personality and loved people. She enjoyed being social, spending time with her friends and being a faithful servant at her church home. She touched the lives of many with her gentle spirit and warm smile. Most importantly she was a devoted mother and grandmother to Kim and Blake.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, strength, and resilience that will continue to inspire those who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known her.

Obituary Preview: John “Quincy” Gilchrist was born February 5, 1943, in Sanford, Florida to the late Frankie Mae Chisolm and Willie Lee Gilchrist. Quincy attended Crooms Academy High School, in Sanford, FL where he obtained his High School Diploma in 1961.

John was best known by the name “Quincy”. He loved cars, music, socializing with friends, family, and playing the lottery. Quincy also loved to dress and shop, not just for himself but for all his family.

Quincy accepted Christ at a young age. He was a lifelong member of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Kendall Mills, NY. He was a hardworking man who put God and family first. Quincy worked alongside his dad in construction where he obtained his great work ethics and family values. In addition, Quincy took on a side job as a bartender to help further secure the family financial needs.

Quincy met his beloved wife Martha at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. They married on August 9, 1969. Their blessed union was born two daughters, Bridget Gilchrist, and Melissa (Gilchrist) LeCounte. Quincy then took on the responsibility of his two younger siblings, when his mom passed away: Annie Mae (Chisolm) Pinkins and Leondra (Chisolm) Duncan. He and Martha raised the two as their additional daughters.

He was a man who believed in family values, doing right by one another, and helping those in need. He was always willing to help all his family whenever he could. He loved taking his family on long-distance trips so that his daughters could know their roots from all parts of the south.

John Quincy Gilchrist leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife of over 55years, Martha; his children, Bridget Gilchrist, Melissa LeCounte (Leon), Annie Mae Pinkins (Cody Jr.), and Leondra Duncan (Rev. E. Duncan); grandchildren: Kayla L. Mary Alice James was born to Mattie Tarrant James and Louis James in Madison, Florida, on May 11, 1924. She departed this life on March 22, 2024, at 99 years of life.

Mary moved to Newark, New Jersey at a young age and later moved to Rochester, New York in 1964. She was employed at French's and later General Motors, where she retired.

Mary accepted Christ at an early age, and after moving to Rochester, she joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Cotton.

She loved family and friends. She had a heart of gold, a sharp tongue, and a sense of humor. Mary loved baking, bowling, traveling and spending time reading books.

Mary is predeceased by her companion, Joseph Morton; parents, Mattie and Louis James, and six brothers. Left to cherish her memory are: Alton (Carolyn) James Jr., Christopher (Aleisa) James, Michael (Denise) James, Keith (Teresa) Singletary, Edna (Eddie) James Harris, Freddie Gray, all of Rochester, New York, Dallas Bennet of Tallahassee, Florida, Roland (Debra) James of Ft. Obituary Preview: Deretha Hines, a beacon of resilience and love, departed from this world on Sunday, March 11th, after a valiant two-and-a-half-year battle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Deretha, who was affectionately known as Retha, mom, mommy, grandma and many more, was born in Quitman, Georgia on June 6, 1951, as the daughter of Lonnie and Bennie Perry. She was the second eldest in a lively household of six siblings.

In 1956, Retha, along with her brother Napoleon and sister Sherry, moved to Rochester, NY, to join their mother in forging a new path forward. At the tender age of 12, Retha faced a formidable opponent in Leukemia. With God’s help and a life-saving bone marrow transplant from her mother, she emerged victorious, her spirit unscathed by the ordeal. Retha's educational journey culminated in her graduation from East High School in 1969, a milestone that paved the way for her future.

She soon embraced love and matrimony with Joe Henry Monds, a union blessed with two children, Napoleon and Joseph Monds.

Life brought new beginnings as Retha found companionship and love with Alvino Hines. This partnership not only joined their hearts but expanded their family with four more treasures—Simona, Fionna, Sharee, and Labreah. Together, they nurtured a family of six.

Dedicating five years to Lifetime Assistance, Inc. as a Direct Professional and thirty-two commendable years to the State of New York, Retha's vocation was a testament to her unwavering commitment to aiding those with disabilities and special needs right into her retirement as of January 24, 2013. Her keen insight brought light to the learning challenges within her own family, fostering an environment where she encouraged family members to seek help and not look at it as a stigma.

Retha's passions were manifold, her interests as vibrant and varied as the blankets she lovingly crocheted for her family, each stitch a testament to her care. Her blankets brought warmth to newborns and her presence brought joy to family gatherings, her laughter echoing in the rooms filled with those she loved. A woman of independence, remarkable for her meticulousness and appreciation for order. Her favorite tunes were reggae, and she never missed a chance to dance. She was also a competitive, take no prisoners Trouble board game player. She and her siblings were very close. She started a birthday club just for them! Retha was a straight shooter, a loyal confidante whose friendship, once given, was as steadfast as the rising sun.

As we bid farewell to Deretha, we carry forward her spirit in the stories we share, the memories we cherish, and the lives we live inspired by her example. Rest in peace, dear Retha, until we meet again.

Melvin Edward Bryant Sr, was born September 21,1933, in Unadilla Georgia, to the late Price Bryant Jr, and Hattie Mae Mathis Bryant. He was the oldest of thirteen children. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was affectionately known as, Mr. Bryant, Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle Melvin and Deac.

He attended Flint River Farm High School and continued at Fort Valley State University. He worked on the farm with his father and siblings for many years until he enlisted into the United States Navy.

Melvin was united in holy matrimony on December 22, 1957, to his beloved wife, Curtis Bernice Bryant.

He was ordained as a deacon in 1960 and faithfully served at New Bethel Baptist Church. Melvin and his family would later move to Cordele, Georgia where he joined and served at Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church until his move to Rochester, New York in 1967. There he joined Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist church where he served on the deacon board, was assistant superintendent of the Sunday School, Financial Secretary of the Board of Trustees and New Members class instructor. He would also attend The Baptist Training Union. He later joined and faithfully served at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist church until his health declined. He taught Bible Study and Vacation Bible School. He was always willing to serve wherever he was needed. Deacon Bryant loved church, and serving The Lord. He enjoyed reading his bible daily and led his family to pray together often. His favorite hymn was “Guide Me O Thy Great Jehovah”, favorite song, “We are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder”, and favorite verse, Romans 12:1-5.

When Mr. Bryant was not serving at church, he was working hard to provide the best for his boys. His colleagues admired him and would speak very highly of his work ethic and faithfulness. He received many awards and certificates for outstanding service and leadership. Melvin was honored to be the first African American manager at Taylor Instruments, an associate at Ruben's Department Store, an assembler at General Dynamics , and a part time sales associate at Sears, Roebuck for more than 20 years until his retirement.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryant became foster and adoptive parents. They fostered sixty-nine children and adopted six.

Melvin had a long, happy and fruitful life of 90 years. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Delma, Aaron and William and his sisters, Thelma, Marylin, and Patricia. Melvin E. Bryant Sr, leaves a legacy and memories to be cherished by his loving wife of 66 years and 2 months, Curtis Bernice Bryant; His sons, Lynnorris, Kenneth (Rochelle), Melvin Jr, (Mirlina), Ronald (Chantelle), and Samuel; His daughters, Brenda Bryant Okoh (Michel), Kristian, Monique, Cristina, and Bernice; 15 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; His brother, Price Bryant III (Rose); his sisters, Lillian Williams, Arabelle (Oscar Chaney), Helen (Wallace Hill), Gladys and Carolyn; His sister in laws, Mary Watkins and Thelma Bryant; 10 god children and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, friends and his devoted home health aide, Anna.

Tuggerson with the birth of Cassie James Tuggerson in Ocala, Florida. Cassie was the 11th of 12 children. The sun set on February 29, 2024 as Cassie, the last living child of her family, passed away. She attended

high school in Florida and later attended Baptist Theological Seminary. Cassie was united in marriage to the late David James in 1941. In 1944 Cassie was blessed with her first daughter, Claretha James, who was born in Hawthorne, Florida. In 1948, she located to upstate New York

and gained employment as a seasonal worker in Sodus, New York. In 1954, she was blessed with her baby girl, Catheriene Minnis. In 1972, Cassie relocated further north to Rochester, New York. She was a good housewife. She later became an entrepreneur and operated her own business. Cassie loved her family, raised her granddaughters,

including a great-great-granddaughter, Tonisha Dale. Cassie’s faith was in God. She was raised as a Baptist. She was also funny and outspoken, but most of all, she was a loving, caring, protector and provider who will be missed by many. As the matriarch of her family, she lived to see five generations of her offsprings. Cassie lived 99 years, from President Calvin Coolidge to Joe Biden. From the prayers of the Ancestors she witnessed MLK, Malcolm X, and the first African-American President, Barack Obama. In 99 years of living there was nothing new under the sun Cassie hadn’t seen. She was a living

book of History with life experiences. Cassie took her last breath, aware of her transition to God. The angels guided her to Heaven with her caregiver and granddaughter, Sandra, by her side.
