What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They also help to notify people of the person's passing, which can be especially important for those who may not have been close to the individual but still want to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary before passing away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charities or organizations that donations can be made to in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online, while others may require them to be faxed or mailed.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is represented in the way you want it to be. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still want to add or modify certain details after you're gone.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge several hundred dollars or more.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may be more flexible and allow for corrections or updates.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Some online platforms may publish notices immediately, while traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture their personality and spirit.

What if I'm unsure about certain details in the obituary?

If you're unsure about specific dates, names, or other details, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit them rather than risk publishing incorrect information.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform directly to report any errors or inaccuracies. They may be able to correct the mistake online or issue a correction notice in a future edition.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly, it's essential to be sensitive and compassionate. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or organization instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include the charity's name and address in the obituary.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?
