Barbara J. "Boo" Ackerson - August 07, 1936 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Council Bluffs)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Jan "Boo" Ackerson, 87, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 29, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska. In the days preceding her passing, she was surrounded by her family she loved so dearly.
She is survived by her children, Roberta Ackerson, Chris Ackerson, and David Ackerson (Kim), and along with 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Brian Ackerson, and daughters, Theresa Ackerson, Mary Ackerson, and Brigitte Ackerson.
Barbara was born on August 7, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa and moved to Council Bluffs with her family as a young girl. To her beloved parents and siblings, Barbie, as she was called, was quick-witted, funny and excelled in high school academically, cheerleading, student government and music culminating in her lead role in the Firefly!
To her children, both living and departed, “Double O Barb” was a singular force of nature and she was our very own! She was a ferocious “mama bear” and loved her children unequivocally, regardless of our flaws and shortcomings. She possessed wisdom that eludes many! A wit worthy of Wilde to go with her wonderful smile! Yet, it is her grace and tremendous capacity for compassion, at times exceeding her means, that heaven is now bequeathed, and our world is a lesser place as a result! We will miss her dearly and her example will be a light to those of us who endure. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Boo exemplified the importance of family above all and the curious notion of “Barb standard time!” Her love of reading, learning, listening, conversation, experience and laughter live on in all who she touched in life!
To her friends, Barb exemplified her belief that, “if you can count your closest friends on one hand, you are truly blessed.” She was a devoted and passionate friend to a treasured few and never hesitated to answer a call for assistance. While we all may lament the enormous loss of our mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt and friend, we can find solace in the fact that she has been embraced by God she loves and our other treasured family in heaven. She is at peace and surrounded by love! Godspeed Boo! As Ronald Reagan said so eloquently, “Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories.” Let all of us who loved Boo rejoice in the joy that we have been so blessed and lucky to have been the objects of her boundless love and heart! That is a beautiful trail indeed! We love you! Be with God! Embrace your children! Be at Peace! You did more than we could have ever asked for in this life! “What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.” – Helen Keller Rest in Peace Boo and may perpetual light shine upon you!
Visitation and Rosary for Barbara will be on Sunday, May 5th between 4-6PM at Cutler-O'Neill Funeral Home, 545 Willow Ave., Council Bluffs, IA. Her Funeral Mass will occur Monday, May 6th at 10AM with luncheon to follow at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1 Bluff Street, Council Bluffs, IA. The Funeral Mass will also be livestreamed through the Cutler-O'Neill website.
Flowers may be sent to Cutler-O’Neill Funeral Home. Or, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Camp CoHoLo Children’s Cancer Camp of Nebraska, POB 24466 Omaha, NE 68124.

No one in the family had more tenure than Phil--a fact that remains true to the present day. His presence, especially in his prime, will be profoundly missed by those who knew him at his best.
A master of spontaneity, Phil was known for his corny jokes and quick-witted wordplay. His favorite television show was "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", a testament to his love for humor and improvised comedy. He and Brian often remarked that he would have been a fierce competitor on the show, and those who knew him best could readily agree that he was a master of innocent jokes colloquially known as "Dad Jokes".
After the passing of his wife, Jean, Phil faced loneliness with courage and resilience. He sought help and worked diligently to restore his independence, showing us all the strength of his spirit. Despite his declining respiratory health, Phil remained a beacon of gratitude and humor, valuing every moment and every person he encountered.
As we remember Phil, we celebrate a life well-lived and a journey marked by generosity of spirit, laughter, and an unwavering love for the fun in life. His legacy of good-humor and resilience will continue to inspire and influence everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Phil was a proud graduate of Lewis Central High School.
