Kay Itzkow Podem - December 17, 1936 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Thomson)
Obituary Preview: Harriet Kay Itzkow Behr Podem, 85, a Dothan, Alabama, resident for the past 62 years, passed away Thursday morning, March 24, 2022.
Kay was born on December 17, 1936, in Augusta, Georgia, to Isadore and Ida Itzkow.
Her parents brought her home to Thomson, Georgia, to the house her grandfather Reuben Kunnes, built in 1918.  It was a happy family home filled with her two sisters, Ellen and Susan, her aunt, Pearl Kunnes, and her grandparents, Annie and Reuben. The home was a source of both love and comfort to Kay, as well as inspiration for many gardening and interior design projects she would pursue in her homes in Dothan.
For college, Kay travelled an hour north of her childhood home to Athens, Georgia, to attend the University of Georgia. There she earned her degree in Business Administration and became a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority, where she made lifelong friends she cherished until the end of her days.
While in Athens, Kay met Jake Behr of Lagrange, GA, whom she married on September 6, 1959. Soon after, Kay and Jake moved to Dothan. They began their family with the birth of their first child, Reisha, in 1961. Two years later they moved to make room for their first son, Jeffrey. Five years later, they completed their family with the birth of their second son, Richard. The Behrs were active members of the community until their marriage ended in 1989.
From 1989-2015, Kay authored two books, worked at Parisian in the China Department, saw her three children marry, became a grandmother of six, and had an active social and travel life.  In 1998, she was introduced to Marvin Podem of Columbus, Georgia, by a sorority sister and they married in 2000. Her marriage to Marvin ended in divorce. Kay loved to garden, enjoyed planting daffodil and tulip bulbs and the weeding to keep her flower beds pristine. She grew camellias, confederate jasmine and cared for many indoor plants. A homemaker at heart, Kay set a beautiful table and made family and friends feel welcome. When she didn’t have time to bake something herself, Kay relied on the local favorite, Rolen’s Bakery, to satisfy her sweet tooth! Over the years, Kay held many leadership positions with Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, Dothan Garden Club, and as a member of a supper club at the Dothan Country Club. She loved to play tennis and walk, either in the neighborhood or at the beach. An avid reader, Kay engaged in Houston County Library activities, most recently the Bookmobile. She was a supporter of both Landmark Park and Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. And Kay loved to do crossword puzzles and play bridge, too!
About five years ago, Kay moved into Whitehall Assisted Living on John D. Odom Road. There she treasured walking the beautifully landscaped grounds, interacting with the caring staff, and dining on the delicious desserts prepared by the wonderful cooks. Just this past fall, she ordered 200 daffodil bulbs and worked with the landscaper to find the best place to plant them. These daffodils began to bloom in early March, just as Kay’s health started to fade.
She is survived by her three children, Reisha Behr Holton (Steve) of Sammamish, WA, Jeffrey Shames Behr (Noriko) of Tokyo, Japan, and Richard Kunnes Behr (Mita) of Birmingham; by her six grandchildren Hallie Elizabeth Holton of Portland, OR, Katie Holton Ratliff  (Ben) of Birmingham, Alexander Shames Behr of Boston, MA, Eliot Itzkow Behr of Houston, TX, Isadora Allene Behr of New York City, NY, and Sofina Elizabeth Behr of Sewanee, TN; by her two sisters, Ellen Salsbury (Carl) of Falls Church VA and Susan Goldstein (Gary) of Birmingham;  by her niece and nephews, Amy Goldstein, Brad Goldstein (Jolene), Robert Salsbury, Daniel Salsbury; and by her four dear first cousins, Barbara Gordon, Alice Sanders, Renee Topper, and Joel Isenberg.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00am Thursday, March 31, at Westview Cemetery in Thomson, Georgia.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am Friday, April 1, at Temple Emanu-El in Dothan, Alabama.

Dr. Leonard L. Dupree - September 29, 1941 - February 28, 2022

Departed: 02/28/2022 (Thomson)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Leonard Larkin Dupree, 80, passed away on February 28, 2022, after an extended illness. He and his wife of 60 years, Jacquelyn Jennings Dupree, reside in Thomson Ga. He officially retired in 2004 as Director of Church-Minister Relations at the Georgia Baptist Convention, headquartered in Atlanta, but he continuously spent a lifetime in the ministry, ending his service as interim Pastor of Mt. Horeb Baptist, Wrens in 2020.
Leonard was born in Montezuma, Georgia on September 29, 1941. His parents were the late Joseph Howard and Evelyn Suggs Dupree of Plains, Georgia and Sumter County/Plains is where he grew up. A graduate of Plains High School in 1959, he received both his Associate in Arts Degree (1961) and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (English, 1968) from Georgia Southwestern State University. For advanced education, he attended Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth Texas, earning his Masters in Divinity in 1973 and his Doctorate in Ministry in 1976. He and Jackie, who also worked as a nurse her entire career, served the Church at large in a variety of jobs throughout South Georgia and Texas while furthering his education.
His post education ministry began in 1973 in Shreveport, LA, as the Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church. In 1979, he returned to Georgia as the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church, Thomson GA, where he served until 1992.  Relocating to Snellville, GA, he directed Church-Minister Relations for the Georgia Baptist Convention until 2004. After retirement from the Convention, he continuously served as Interim Pastor for several area churches, including a two-year term as interim at First Baptist, Thomson. In December of 2012, he was designated as Pastor Emeritus here at FBC Thomson, a designation he held until his death. Any review of his accomplishments from youth until late in life demonstrates that Leonard was honored for high achievement throughout his life in virtually everything he got involved in.
Dr. Dupree is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jackie, a brother Ronnie Dupree (Emily), Plains, GA, his son, Larkin Dupree (Dahlene), Advance, NC, his daughter, Beth Powers (Don), Thomson GA, eight grandchildren, Suzanna Dupree Sutton (Alex), Lee Dupree, Jacob Powers (Larissa), Leah Powers (Kevin Jackson), Abigail Dupree Lunsford (Caden), Mitchell Powers (Kaitlyn), Brant Dupree, and Alec Powers (Jordan), 6 great-grandchildren, Aiden Sutton, Sarahann Sutton, Lee Dupree, Austin Sutton, Lily Dupree, and Sharlotte Sutton.
Leonard was a voracious reader until his death and an ever curious, lifelong student of Holy scriptures, theology, church history, prayer, and biblical languages, amassing a library filled with thousands of books on those subjects and more. He loved the outdoors …hunting, fishing, birdwatching, gardening, growing flowers, riding a tractor, and was the family expert on anything that had to do with nature. He was so proud that he had been raised on a farm and that experience shaped him his entire life. If you were outdoors with Leonard, you would know without fail that his wonderment at all he saw and experienced in the Creation came directly through his faith in the Lord. He was a natural servant leader who loved the Lord first, with his family a close second.
The funeral service for Dr. Dupree will be held at 3PM on Sunday, March 6, 2022, at First Baptist Church, Thomson. Dr. David Lambert will lead the service, assisted by Dr. John Bryan. An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to express their condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos or videos to accompany the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. Just be sure to store it safely and let your loved ones know where to find it.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and features included. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer more affordable options or even free listings.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an online obituary, but changes to print publications are usually not allowed due to space constraints and deadlines. Ensure accuracy when submitting the initial draft.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms often publish immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add personal touches and meaning to the tribute. Just be mindful of copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions if required.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a self-written tribute that celebrates one's life while they are still alive. It can serve as a unique way to reflect on accomplishments and share gratitude with loved ones.

Can I include humor in an obituary?
