Obituary Preview: James Arvil Royce of Circleville, Ohio passed away on April 14, 2022, at 86 years, 11 months, and 5 days.  He was born at Smoot Creek, Kentucky on May 10th,1935 as the second of nine children to the union of the late Acey and Ella Boggs Royce.
“Arvil”, as he was known to family and friends, was a graduate of Whitesburg High School and had lived in Letcher and Harlan Counties for much of his life until relocating to Ohio 20+ years ago.
Arvil loved country music and television shows and always had a story or joke to share.  He was gifted with a memory for details and became a “go-to” person for family information.    He would be the first one to tell you how proud he was to have been a Mama’s boy and how much he missed family members who had already passed on.    He never lost his sense of optimism and was very appreciative of the care he received from the folks at Circleville Post-Acute Nursing Home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Lenzy, Acey Jr, Dudley, and Paul Royce, and 1 sister, Wanda Gibson.
Arvil is survived by his brother, Donald Royce of Romeoville, Illinois, and two sisters, Madge Sexton of Jackhorn, Kentucky, and Barbara Schaef of Columbia, South Carolina, as well as several nephews and nieces and their families.
We take comfort in the fact that Arvil is with our Lord Jesus Christ.  He can now move and breathe freely again in Heaven and is reunited with loved ones.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 20th at the Cumberland Valley Funeral Home beginning at  10 am until the funeral hour of 12 noon with Brother Glenn Cornett officiating.
Burial will follow at Peaceful Acres Cemetery in Hiram, Kentucky.

Obituary Preview: Jettie Sparkman Cornett, age 71, of Gordon, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, April 2, 2022.  She was the daughter of the late Eli and Evelyn Boggs Sparkman and the loving wife of the late Dailey Cornett. She was born on October 24, 1950, and was a life-long resident of Gordon, Kentucky.
Jettie enjoyed reading, cooking, and was known to give out haircuts to her family and friends, it was something she really liked doing.   She also loved watching her Hallmark movies on television.   She was a kindhearted lady, a wonderful mother, and grandmother.   She will be missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Kenny (Sherry) Cornett of Gordon, Kentucky, daughter, Penny (Phillip) Capps of Weaverville, North Carolina, brothers, Sam Sparkman and Eli Sparkman both of Gordon, Kentucky, George Sparkman of Radcliff, Kentucky, sisters, Jackie Cornett and Judy Fields both of Gordon, Kentucky, Lucille Beal of Arizona, four grandchildren, Emily Begley, Hannah Begley, Autumn Cornett and Gracey Cornett, a host of other relatives and friends.

She was born unto the union of the late Roy and Ethel Jordan in Lynch, KY, on April 21, 1945.  She was a retired Certified Nurse's Assistant with Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.  Brenda loved arts and crafts with her friends, watching television, shopping and was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats.   She believed in the Church of God faith and was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Joshua “Joe” Johnson.

Obituary Preview: Delois Faye Birchfield, age 83, of Cumberland, Kentucky, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Monday, February 28, 2022, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was born unto the union of the late Henry and Mary Jane Cornett Lewis in Gilley, KY on October 8, 1938.   She was married for sixty-four years to the love of her life, the late Ervin Birchfield.  Delois was a loving mother, homemaker, and member of the Sandhill Baptist Church.  She enjoyed puzzles, crocheting, but was known for being the best cook ever.   She was a devoted and faithful servant of God.  She loved going to church and reading her Bible.    It saddens us today that we have lost her, but we rejoice in knowing she has become an Angel in Heaven and now reunited with loved ones gone on before, no more pain or suffering.  She will be forever missed.
Preceding Delois in death, daughter, Debra Jean Birchfield, sister, Irene Cornett, brothers, Billy Joe and Ray Lewis, grandchildren, Shayna Birchfield, and Joe Eldridge.

He was a retired shipping clerk for S.E.K.R.I.   Robert was a member of the Boggs Hollow House of Prayer.  He loved spending time with his family, traveling, was an avid UK basketball & Dallas Cowboys fan.  He enjoyed NASCAR racing and fishing.  He will be missed greatly. Preceding him in death is sister, Melissa Sumpter.

Obituary Preview: Emily Jean Shell Cornett was called home on Monday, February 21, 2022, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital with her loving family by her side.  She was born on December 13, 1932, making her blessed by the Lord with 89 years on this earth.
She was a charter member of the Hurricane Valley Primitive Baptist Church.  She loved to hear and sing the old-time hymns, her favorites included, “Not Afraid to Die”, and “Why not tonight”.  Emily was a faithful servant of the Lord.   She enjoyed going to church, sitting in her favorite pew, singing, and listening to the word of God.  She was a wonderful woman that loved with all her heart. Her departing has left a void in the hearts of her family and friends, but God gained a beautiful angel this morning.
Preceding her in death, husband, Otis Cornett, parents, Willie and Polly Shell, brothers, Henry and Lonnie Shell, sisters, Nancy Walker, Edna Cornett, Edith Shell, grandson, David Allen Cornett, daughter-in-law, Grace E. Cornett, son-in-law, Dale Middleton, daughter-in-law, Delores Cornett.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at the church at 1 p.m. with Brothers, Glenn Cornett, Justice Cornett, Donnie Dixon, Dwight Lewis, and Fred Frazier officiating.
Burial will follow in the East Haven Cemetery in Gordon, KY.
Family will serve as pallbearers.

Mable Johnson - December 19, 1935 - February 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mable Johnson, age 86, of Jackhorn, Kentucky, received her Heavenly reward on Friday, February 11, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on December 19, 1935, unto the union of the late John Jefferson and Bessie Ellen Stewart Fleming in Etty, Kentucky.   She was a 76-year member of the Hemphill Church of Christ.    She was retired from the Letcher County Board of Education as an assistant librarian.  Mabel was a long time and founding President of the Hemphill Community Center, member of the Letcher County Coal Miners Memorial committee and had served as officer of Letcher County Election Board for the Baker precinct.  Mable had so much love to share with her family, especially her grand, great, and great-great grandchildren.   She enjoyed the Letcher County Senior Citizens Boone Fork Center.   She was such a delightful and hard-working lady in her community, so to show appreciation, December 19th, was declared the Mable Johnson Day every year in Letcher County.  She was known for being a wonderful cook, and her love of canning and quilting.   The family and her community have suffered a loss and will miss Mable dearly.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Webster Johnson, son, Rex Allen Johnson, daughter, Monek Johnson-Hutton, brothers, Tom, Ezra, Lenville, Pallas, William, Clinton, Solomon and Gene Fleming, sisters, Glassie Hall, and Della Lucas.
Left to cherish her memory, daughters, Gwen Johnson of Hemphill, KY, Sandy Fox of Thornton, KY, brother, Willard (Barbara) Fleming of McRoberts, KY, ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren also survive.

Obituary Preview: Brenda Sue Shepherd Mowery, age 66, of Cumberland, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.  She was born on August 19, 1955, unto the union of the late James Edward "Buck" and Elsie Louise "June" Hall Shepherd in Harlan, KY.  She had worked many years ago as a waitress for the "Fuzzy Duck" in Cumberland, Kentucky.   Brenda believed in the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing, quilting, watching her favorite television show, "The Rifleman", but most of all, spending time with her precious grandbabies.   Brenda was the type of lady that made friends easy and never met a stranger, her outlook on life, was that of pure love.  She will be missed by all. She is preceded in death by her husband, John D. Mowery, brothers, James Edward Shepherd, Lawrence Shepherd, niece, Penny Deal and nephew, James David Thacker.

She is preceded in death by her sons, Cedric Denzel Jackson and Larry Nathaniel Jones, grandson, Da'Shaun Ballard, nephew, Oscar Thrash III.

Morris Lewis - August 26, 1940 - February 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: Morris Lewis, 81, of Big Jakes Branch, Gordon; passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, in Hazard, KY.
Morris was retired from U.S. Steel and MSHA as a federal mine inspector. He was also a long-time Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
When he wasn’t at work, you could find Morris in the great outdoors gardening, riding ATV’s, fishing, hunting and raising cattle. He was the past Fire Chief at the Gordon Fire Department, a Kentucky Colonel and was a member of the Nolan Lodge #806.
Morris was a member of the Kings Creek Community Church and believed in the Baptist faith.
He was born August 26, 1940, in Gilley, KY to the late David and Susie Halcomb Lewis.
Survivors include his wife of 61 1/2 years, Vonda Thompson Lewis, Gordon; two sons, Randall (Sandra) Lewis, Hyden; Robert (Willa) Lewis, Whitesville, NC; two daughters, Pamela (Fred) Frazier, Gordon; Lora (Jack) Short, Beattyville; a sister-in-law and special caregiver, Wilma Thompson; and sister Phyllis Goins, Clay City, KY.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Herbert "Ned" Robert, Lloyd and Roscoe Lewis: and two sisters, Bertha Layton and Ida Mae Swicegood. Nine grandchildren also survive, Dustin Asher, David Short, Randall Lee Lewis II, Justin Gross, Reagan Weedman, Brett Gross, Kyle Lewis, Andrew Lewis, Suzannah Frazier and a host of great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted from the Kings Creek Community Church on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 7 p.m. with Rev. Jimmy Dotson presiding. Visitation will begin at 5:30 pm. Masonic Rites will be observed at the conclusion of the funeral service.
Graveside services will be conducted at the Morris Lewis Cemetery in Gilley on Wednesday, February 9th at 1 p.m. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Cleon Calvert Cornett - February 19, 1939 - February 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Cleon C. Cornett, 82, Cumberland, passed peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 6, 2022.
A good ole Cumberland boy, Cleon graduated from Cumberland High School in 1956 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was an E-5 Sgt. holding the position of recon helicopter mechanic. Following his service in the military, Cleon returned to his Harlan Co. roots and gained more training at the Harlan Area Vocational School.
His schooling at CHS, Army training and vocational school prepared him for a distinguished career at General Electric in Evendale, OH, where he quickly rose through the career ladder beginning as a machinist and advancing to foreman, senior planner and was a Unit Manager upon his retirement. While at GE, Cleon was a leader having been cited for several awards in managerial and professional development areas.
When it came time to retire in 1993, Cleon returned to the family homeplace in Hiram where he loved gardening and frequently going on fishing trips. Retirement also brought many volunteer opportunities.
Cleon served as chairman of the FRYSC Advisory Board at Cumberland Elementary School, President of the Tri-Cities Heritage Development Corp., Chairman of Tri-City Senior Citizens Committee, Member of the VFW Post 5171, Vice-Chairman of the Harlan County Tourism Commission, Chairman of Eastern Kentucky Veterans Memorial & Walking Trail.  Also, he worked with the Southeast Community and Technical College Veterans Day activities.
Born February 19, 1939, in Skyline, KY, he was the son of Major and Ada Ison Cornett and believed in the Baptist Faith.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Huff Cornett, Cumberland; two sons, Michael (Pamela) Cornett, Cincinnati, OH; and Scott (Jess) Cornett Weber, Dallas, TX; four daughters, Vickie Watters, Cincinnati, OH; Sara Lynn (Tim) Gillespie, Milford, OH; Elizabeth Ann (Larry) Hamilton, Cumberland, KY; and Kimberly North (Rick) Krouse, Mason, OH.
One brother survives, Jack Fultz, Dayton, OH. He was predeceased by brothers Major Preston (Mary) Cornett and Herbert A. Cornett; and sisters Helen (Pete) Cornett and Dorothy (Dennis) Combs.
Eight surviving grandchildren are Joshua (Bailey) Cornett, Dustin (Wendi) Cornett, Wendy Nicole (Preston) Pierce, Nicholas Krouse, Jennifer (Marc) Hamilton and Amy (Chris) Bennett and Taylor (Garrett) Keating, Alex Grimes.
Twelve surviving great grandchildren are Destiny Cornett, Hunter Cornett, Colton Cornett, Olivia Pierce, Casandra Hamilton, Makayla Hamilton, Lilly Fredrick, Vinyard Bennett, Benny Bennett, Preston Keating, Conner Keating, Owen Hamilton and a long list of extended family also survive.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 11, 2022, from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church in Cumberland. Funeral services will be conducted from the church at 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Roger Colinger officiating.
Following services at the church, the procession will proceed to the Veteran’s Memorial Park on U.S. 119, where Military Rites will be performed by the Harlan Honor Guard. The park was a very special project Cleon worked diligently for.
The procession will then proceed to Peaceful Acres Cemetery for final Committal Services.
Pallbearers will be Tim Gillespie, Larry Hamilton, Mike Cornett, Josh Cornett, Dustin Cornett, Nicholas Krouse, Preston Pierce and Don Farmer.

Obituary Preview: Christopher Joe Sergent, age 47 of Cranks, KY, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hazard, KY.  He was born on May 1, 1974, in Harlan, KY.  He believed in the Methodist faith, attended Cumberland United Methodist Church and was a self-employed carpenter.  He loved construction, making model cars, and reading.   Joe was a unique man, always on the go and had a smile for everyone.  If he could help you, he did.  He did amazing carpentry work and never believed in charging a high price, he always said, “You never know when I might need your help someday.”  Joe will be missed by his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Hubbs, a son, Christopher Joe Sergent, JR.

Penny was a member of the Poor Fork Church of Christ in Rosspoint, KY.  She worked hard and received her Master of Education degree from Lindsay Wilson College and became a Career Navigator Specialist for the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.   She enjoyed being a teacher, and was always available to her student’s day or night.   Penny’s greatest passion and main love was her family.   She loved spending time with her grandchildren so much.   Penny had a way of bringing calmness to any situation.  She was an amazing lady, who will be missed by all.
She is preceded also in death by her sister, Jenny Shepherd.
Left to cherish her memory is husband, John Deal of Cumberland, KY, son, Cody Allen (Cassondra) Deal of Cumberland, KY, brother, Lawrence David (Andrea) Shepherd of Cumberland, KY, grandchildren, Baileigh and Ryder Deal, a host of other relatives, friends and coworkers.

He was a retired coal miner for U.S. Steel.   Sam believed in the Pentecostal faith and was a devoted member of the Tri-City Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, ginseng hunting, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and loved riding his four-wheeler, in fact, one of his last requests was to go for one more ride on his ATV.   Following the funeral, Sam will be transported from the church via ATV to his final resting place.
He has gone on to join his loving wife of forty-eight years, Mary Ellen Shields Kelly, who passed in 2011, his son, Bobby Darrel Kelly, daughter, Jazymine Whitehead, grandson, John L. Kelly, brothers, David, Roger and Johnny Kelly, Bo, Letch and Richard Riddle, sisters, Jewell Kelly, and Vera Riddle.

Obituary Preview: Sara Johnson, age 59, entered eternal rest on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.   Sara had been a resident of the Tri-Cities Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cumberland, KY.    Sara was a retired Security Officer for Security Unlimited in Las Vegas, Nevada.  She believed in the Baptist faith and loved the television show, “The Golden Girls.”   Sara was a joyful person with a big heart, after she became a resident, she thought of the staff as her family.  She spoke how wonderful all the nurses, cna’s, and administrative staff were to her, always looking for ways to make her stay even better.   Sara had a smile that would light up the dark and genuinely cared about the people in her life.  She may have left this world to early but, her memories will be carried on forever.
Sara is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Vernon and Betty Lou Albee Johnson, brother, Robert Johnson, stepson, Joey Risner and special friend, Vera Riddle.
