John Knott - November 09, 1982 - September 12, 2023

Departed: 09/12/2023 (Sparks)
Obituary Preview: John Knott – an American by birth but a Veteran by choice – died on September 12, 2023.
At the time of his death, he was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Reno Lodge #13; he also was serving as a Second Vice Commander with Nevada’s American Legion Post #1.
Like all the Knotts before him, John was kind, a devout Presbyterian, an avid reader, writer and learner, but especially a devoted patriot. Because both Lodge #13 and Post #1 meet monthly at the same date and time, John focused on veterans.
Born in Reno to Les and Liz Knott on November 9, 1982, John Leslie Knott II was christened at Reno’s St. John’s Presbyterian Church. He was named for his grandfather who had earned a Purple Heart in the Pacific Theater, later becoming a Masonic Brother at the Massillon (Ohio) Clinton Lodge #47.
John’s father Leslie Hugh Knott II earned a Bronze Star during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Before his death in 2003, he had become a respected State Farm Insurance agent and a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters at Lodge #13.
John’s mother Liz taught English before retiring in 2006. She helped inspire John’s interest in composing by bringing him (when nine) to an annual Book Out event so that those attending on that Saturday could leave as published authors.
Les’s story-telling near Indian Guide (and other) campfires caused young John and his older brother Greg to appreciate well-chosen words and to respect Mother Earth.
Being invited by Paul and Elaine Quilici to cabins built at Twin Lakes meant the Knott family enjoyed the outdoors there, too.
Having Bertha Miranda and her amazing family become neighbors meant John learned Spanish the natural way! Years later, when Bertha held a scholarship dinner so that local Hispanics could better afford college, John volunteered to help re-enact the Cinco de Mayo victory over France.
During her visits to Nevada, Becky Deuben, as a flight attendant and John’s aunt, reinforced how to follow the Golden Rule and to appreciate and respect our blessings. Her presence bolstered John’s understanding of how to become an adult: A problem-solving, clear-thinking person, much like Socrates.
As he progressed, John began playing soccer, baseball, the trumpet and Pop Warner. He also could sing – no monotone for him – and eventually taught himself how to play a few chords on a guitar from reading library books. He learned naturally that the more you read, the better you understand AND write.
An artist with pen or pencil, John let his creative brain loose on paper. Much of this early art is lost, but more recently John watched the number of Facebook followers grow as he posted comical caricatures of celebrities.
Already having some linguistics background made studying French in middle school much easier for him. Later, while at the National Training Center, he more easily talked with the Iraqi and Afghanistan linguists. John was known for conversing and becoming friends with nearly everyone he encountered. Many of McQueen’s teachers amazed John, and he respected them:
Leo McBride gave him the confidence to shine on stage.
Because John’s maternal grandparents had already taught “Use it up; wear it out; make do; or do without,” John could better understand the benefits of frugality in personal finances that Coach Ken Dalton taught.
Since Burning Man intrigued, he and several buddies packed up Poncho and drove to La Playa. His geodesic domes became a hit there! Later, he equipped some to float for Pyramid Lake outings.
When his father suggested John join the Army Guard, he did. John’s ASFAB scores and his enlistment in 2000 had him graduating as a Combat Medic three days after that fateful Tuesday, September 11, 2001.
Assigned to Operation Noble Eagle, John helped train medics in all branches of service at Fort Irwin (CA) before they would deploy to the Middle East. John earned the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year award in both 2004 and 2005. One of his many awards says, “SGT Knott’s actions bring great credit upon himself, the Combat Medics, 1st Squadron 221st Cavalry, and the United States Army.” Upon returning to Reno, John continued at both TMCC and UNR. His goal: Become a Physician’s Assistant. Three seizures in one day, the third lasting over 45 minutes in the Reno VA ER caused a major “hiccup.”
John persevered, though. He brought entertainment (like turtles) to birthday parties to bring entertainment (like turtles). He continued taking classes toward his career goal.
In 2023, he was posthumously awarded a UNR Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in neuroscience. Among John’s other accomplishments in his 40 years:
• Representing UNR’s USAC while studying photography at Wellington College in New Zealand.
• Representing Nevada at the Operation Free conference in Washington, D.C. Upon returning, he used some of his Army savings for solar panels on his home.
• Helping deliver a baby in remote Peru in 2009 while attending Global in Diagnostic Disease Education with TMCC’s Dr. John Adlish.
• Privately honoring Master Sergeant Christian Riege in November of 2011. [John marched 35 miles from UNR’s Legacy Hall to the Capitol for prayer; then on to the I-Hop restaurant to leave specially created dog tags for Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35; Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31; MSG Riege, 38; and the civilian who was also murdered that September day: Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67.]
• Commissioning Nixon artist Sean Kelly to create tributes using Nevada barbed wire for our Fallen, including for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment - Blackhorse and for MSG Riege.
• Helping to honor those buried in Reno’s Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery at 1013–1059 Angel Street.
• Volunteering over the years with UNR’s Omega Delta Sigma. John especially enjoyed visiting with art projects and music at Reno’s Veteran’s Hospital and participating in many ruck marches and leading food collections for local veterans.
John is survived by his mother Liz, brother Greg, nephew Logan (all of Reno), and the phenomenal Aunt Rebecca Deuben of Greenville (SC) and her son John (Katie) of Greer (SC).
His grandparents, maternal Aunt Vera, paternal Great Aunt Marvel, father, and sister Andrea (2008) preceded him in death.
Post #13 plans to honor John at 9:30 am on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Reno’s Masonic Memorial Chapel, 435 Stoker Avenue. All friends and family are invited. Refreshments follow. Interment will be private.
The American Legion honored John earlier at Reno’s First Congregational Church.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1965. He was a member of SAE. College is where he met his amazing wife, Roberta, 62 years ago. He continued his education at the University of Utah-Space Science Institute and the University of Arizona in Flagstaff earning a Master of Science/Biology degree in 1968. As an avid hunter, he was dedicated to the conservation of wetlands in Nevada and raised over a million dollars for this organization.
Bob loved to travel with family and friends. One of his favorite places was Kauai. As Neil started building the couple their first home, Beth was not only a homemaker, but acted as a farmhand, helping with the dairy and driving equipment during haying season. In 1962, she started as a hot lunch cook in the Fernley Schools and served as food services director for ten years. She began to take evening classes and went to summer school while she worked as a school library assistant. She graduated from the University of Nevada in 1976 with a BA in Education and Library Science as a field of interest. For the next 26 years she served as teacher/librarian for Lyon County School District in Fernley. She also held a position as trustee on the Lyon County Library Board.
Beth was active in PTA and served as president for Fernley Homemakers and the Ladies Aid Society. She was a 4-H Club Leader for 22 years, continuing as her children and grandchildren finished their time in the youth organization. After a long struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis, her husband Neil died and Beth became involved in researching the family genealogy. She discovered ancestors that provided her acceptance into the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons & Daughters of the Pilgrims, the National Huguenot Society, Colonial Dames and the order of the Crown of Charlemagne Society of the United States of America.
Through her decades of living in Fernley, Beth gathered historical information, photos, and biographical narratives of the people who built the community. She collaborated with two other friends to publish a book titled Fernley, The Early Years. She was involved in the planning and execution of the 2006 Fernley Centennial Celebration. In her role presiding over the Ladies Aid, she was instrumental in getting Fernley’s original one room schoolhouse and community church placed on the Nevada State Registry of Historic Places and on the National Historic Register.
After her retirement, as Fernley’s growth gradually encircled the ranch, Beth finally sold all but two and a half acres, where she continued to raise her miniature horses. She was often seen driving her “minis” behind a two wheeled cart along Miller Lane, giving rides to family and friends. As an avid antique enthusiast, Beth repaired, refinished and reused many pieces, creating a fascinating assemblage of museum quality collectibles in her home.
Beth lived life to the fullest with energy, zest and enthusiasm. She was interested in everything. She was an outstanding and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. Beth is survived by her three children; Joe Mortensen (Cindy), Marge Rhyno (Rich), and George Mortensen (Linda), grandsons; Jessen Mortensen (Alissa), Cole Mortensen (Jennifer), James Mortensen (Colleen), and Connor Rhyno, granddaughters; Mary Elisabeth Mortensen, Leah Jones (Matt), and Misty Conely. She is known to her nine great grandchildren as “Granny the Great.” We will forever miss her laughter, wit, wisdom, love and generosity.
Her children have chosen to celebrate her life with a small family gathering where we can share memories. Arrangements are being handled by John Sparks Cremation Society of Nevada. If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Fernley Ladies Aid Society, P.O. Box 2104, Fernley, NV 89408.

This 69 year old "the man, the myth, the legend" was known for his fun loving, crazy, larger than life personality. He always knew just how to make you smile. Between them both he was given 9 grandchildren (Dakota, Kaylynn, Bryce, Keasha, Brett, Kloe, Aiden, Kasey and Ashten) and 2 great grandchildren (Kaden and Triton). To honor his memory a celebration of his life will be held at Paul B Johnson State Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on Saturday October 1, 2022 at 5:00 pm. All are welcome to attend to raise a toast in his memory around that campfire. Pete left this world on September 13, 2022 as a Sergeant for the USAF. The family ask if you would like to donate in his memory to please send all donations to the Disabled American Vetrans Fundat https://secure.dav.org/donate. Pete lived each day to the absolute fullest and never allowed his disability to slow him down. This is not the end but only the beginning. Sherwood J. (Woody) Smith - December 25, 1940 - August 29, 2022

Departed: 08/29/2022 (Sparks)
Obituary Preview: Sherwood (Woody) Smith, age 81, of Sparks, Nevada passed at his home on August 29th, 2022.
Born in San Francisco, Woody was raised by his great grandmother Emma Sutton and grandparents, George and Stella Sutton in Martinez, California. He graduated from Alhambra High School, going off to CalPoly in his ‘57 Corvette to study Mechanical Engineering where he met his wife of 58 years, Judy Tucker. Woody soon moved back up to the Bay Area, joining the Walnut Creek Police Department. It was here he had a career that led him all the way to Patrol Sergeant, while giving him countless wild stories which he’d often recall to the bewilderment of those around him. During his time with the police department he also became a father to his two children, Brian and Teri Smith, whom he loved and would often spend time with between shifts, and whom he’d also take on countless camping and boating trips spanning California.
Woody was also incredibly driven in other pursuits, from joining the Masonic Lodge and becoming a Freemason, to his dedicated practice of Karate, where he achieved his black belt and even competed in the Police Olympics. Woody had a number of incredible moments in his life as well, from working at a refinery to jumping out of airplanes, enlisting in the Navy, witnessing the Beatnik movement from the cafes of which it started to seeing the Berkeley riots firsthand, traveling the great West in an RV to being a private investigator in Reno. He was a man of many stories and lived more lives than most could aspire to. He did it all while always making time for his family— showering them with love, his trademark sense of humor and incredible stories, appreciation for cult classic films, and passion for deep conversation in a range of intellectual pursuits which he still kept up with at every stage of his life. He made many friends along the way, and has left a lasting impact on all he’s met, leading his life with integrity and drive, while always making sure to take in the moment and find the humor in things.
He is loved and survived by his wife Judy Smith, his daughter Teri and son Brian Smith, his son-in-law Rich Brennan and daughter-in-law Jackie Smith, his grandchildren Michael and Richard Brennan, his great grandson Richie Brennan, sister Rene Fee, his brother-in-law and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and his schnauzer Lila.
His final wish was that in remembrance, before the first drink, pour a sip on the ground for him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's illness or death.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes and more photos.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by email or through their website. Be sure to check their submission guidelines and deadlines in advance.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they want to be remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the tribute. This can help capture the essence of the person's spirit and make the reading more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the person's death or life, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. You may want to consult with family members or a funeral director for guidance.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, quotes, poems, or lyrics can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or philosophy.

What if I don't have all the information needed for an obituary?

If you're missing certain details or dates, don't worry! You can still write a meaningful obituary that focuses on the person's character, accomplishments, and impact on others.

Can I update an obituary after it's been published?

This may depend on the publication or platform. If you need to make corrections or additions, contact the relevant party as soon as possible to see if changes can be made.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I request corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in a published obituary, contact the publication or platform as soon as possible to request corrections.

Is it necessary to include funeral service details in an obituary?

No, but it's common practice to include this information so that friends and family know when and where to pay their respects.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about memorial donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a good cause.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer not to share funeral service details publicly, you can simply omit this information from the obituary or specify that services are private.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary belatedly can still be a therapeutic way to process your grief and celebrate the person's life.

How do I deal with conflicting opinions about what to include in an obituary?

In cases where family members or friends have differing opinions, try to find common ground and prioritize what's most important. You may also want to consider seeking guidance from a funeral director or counselor.

Is it appropriate to mention pets in an obituary?

Yes! For many people, pets are beloved family members. Including them in an obituary can add warmth and personality to the tribute.

This depends on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some may allow links or URLs; others may not. Be sure to check their policies before submitting your tribute.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely; others may be archived after a certain period. Be sure to check their policies before submitting your tribute.
