John Malone - June 01, 1935 - January 17, 2019

Departed: 01/17/2019 (Waynesville)
Obituary Preview: John Malone of Maggie Valley was a loving husband, a father of five, a humanitarian, and a strong believer in the power and the principles of liberal democracy.
Born in Allegheny County, PA and educated at the University of Pittsburgh and the London School of Economics, John came to Western North Carolina following a 30-year career in international development where he worked and lived in dozens of countries, including Ethiopia, Malawi, and Indonesia.  He was happiest when working in the field, in direct contact with the people he sought to help, rather than in the corridors of a Washington bureaucracy.  In retirement, John translated his global experience and knowledge into a second career supporting local causes that mattered to him.  A member of the Haywood County Guardian ad Litem Program for ten years, John devoted many hours to ensuring the safety and protecting the rights of vulnerable children.  John served on the board of a local charity, and he delivered Meals on Wheels to seniors throughout the county.  He could frequently be spotted alongside his wife Christa carrying placards at local demonstrations, and he actively supported his party around local and national elections, working to raise awareness and increase voter registration in Western NC.
A member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 30 years, John sought to help others by sharing his own story of recovery, and he volunteered his expertise to an international organization that supports twelve-step programs around the world.  A lover of music, history, and books, and also a talented writer, John researched his family genealogy and wrote two novels telling the story of his ancestors’ migration from Ireland to America.
John is survived by Christa, his wife of 57 years; his sister Carolyn Bonier; five children: Susanna Wingenroth, Amha Demeke, Bettina Malone, Michael Malone, and Daniel Malone; nine grandchildren; and many caring friends.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks for the unstinting love and care provided by Haywood Hospice and Palliative Care as well as Autumn Care Nursing Home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. However, it's not uncommon for funeral homes or obituary writers to assist with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words for a standard obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to discuss your wishes with your loved ones and make sure they're aware of your intentions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a basic listing. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It's usually possible to make minor corrections or updates to an obituary after publication. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space constraints or deadlines. Check with the publication or platform for their policies.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary greatly. Newspapers typically have strict deadlines, while online platforms may publish immediately or within a few hours.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

What if I'm unsure about certain details in the obituary?

If you're unsure about specific dates, names, or other information, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit that detail rather than risk publishing incorrect information.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can be a beautiful way to add depth and personality to the obituary.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in collecting historical obituaries. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have resources to help you locate older obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary online. Be sure to check copyright laws and regulations before doing so.

What if there are multiple versions of an obituary?

In cases where there are multiple versions of an obituary (e.g., one written by a family member and another by a funeral home), it's best to clarify which version is considered official and make sure all parties are aware of any discrepancies.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no – it depends on the online platform's policies. If allowed, links can be useful for directing readers to charity donation pages, memorial websites, or social media profiles.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration that online obituaries remain available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them accessible indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I create a memorial website instead of an obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites offer a more comprehensive way to celebrate a person's life and share memories with others. They often include features like photo galleries, guestbooks, and donation links.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?

Yes! When writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary, it's essential to respect the person's gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationships. Use their preferred name and pronouns, acknowledge their partner(s) if applicable, and highlight their contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.

Can I include information about organ donation in an obituary?
