John Frank Nilsen - November 03, 1948 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Lewistown)
Obituary Preview: John Frank Nilsen, 75, passed away on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, at the Tender Nest Assisted Living hospice facility in Billings, MT. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 28th, 11:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 512 West Broadway Street, Lewistown, MT.
John was the 2nd child born to Frank and Florence Nilsen in Lewistown, MT on November 3rd, 1948. He was a mere 4 lbs.; he followed the birth of his twin sister, Joan Florence by only two minutes. The family's first home was an apartment at the Hotel Dolan in Judith Gap, MT, which unfortunately burnt to the ground in 1950. They then bought a house in Judith Gap and John and Joan were joined by 5 more siblings, Roberta, Trudi, Pamela, James and Debra. They were all raised in Judith Gap.
John had a paper route at the age of 12; sunshine, rain or snow he delivered that paper, most of the time on his bike. One hot summer day a scraggly old dog followed John home and never left, he named him simply Brown, not Brownie just Brown. He was a great addition to the family and John's best friend. Other jobs were helping on surrounding ranches during the summer months. He and Joan graduated in 1967 from Judith Gap High School after which he enlisted into the Navy on August 23rd of that year. While in the service, John was trained as a Dental Hygienist. He served in the Navy until 1971 and from there went into the Marine Corps until 1973.
After the service, John had a few different jobs which included working in a large truck body shop and working at the Park and Recreation Department for the city of Billings. He eventually applied and was accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program at Sheridan Junior College in Sheridan, Wyoming. He graduated from that program on May 12, 1978. As a second-year student John was assigned to mentor a first-year student and that is how he met Kim Grenager, who became a lifelong friend. After graduation he worked for a dentist in Livingston, MT until he accepted a position in the Dental Division of Student Services at the University of Montana where he worked until he retired in 2004. John was an avid Griz fan, he knew every player personally because he was the guy that took molds of their teeth for their mouth guards.
He met his wife, Patti Jo Sherwood in Missoula. She brought two children into the marriage, Jessica and Josh. That marriage dissolved after a few years, but John was always a part of her children's lives as they grew up and later a grandfather to Kelcee and Kingsley.
John was always in remarkable shape; he did a couple of marathons and many 10k and 5k races. He encouraged his siblings and nieces to follow suit and several of them have also done marathons and 1/2 marathons. He did stop running but could be seen walking every day with his faithful companion, Lucky, his dog who was always with him.
After his retirement from the University of Montana in January of 2005, he and Lucky moved to Lewistown and became his Mom and Dad's go to guy. He worked tirelessly remodeling his home until he had every room just right. We can't forget the super fan he was for the Griz; he would travel to Missoula for every home game they played.
He had a breakfast meeting every morning with several friends at McDonalds. Their group would talk and discuss; John always being the very quiet one. He had lunch at Grub Steaks where he enjoyed conversation and friends. He loved to bowl and joined a bowling league at Snowy Lanes. John was a member of the United Methodist Church; when asked he would gladly help repair, paint or do any job they needed done.
John led a simple life. He had a sweet, kind, and gentle soul. He loved his family dearly; he was a great stepfather and super great friend. We were all blessed to have known and loved him. He is survived by his younger sisters, Roberta Richter (Ken), Albuquerque, NM, Trudi Andersen (Steve), Laurel, MT and Pamela Nilsen, Billings, MT; his special brother, James Nilsen, Billings, MT; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Joan and Debra. Rest in peace Johnny. Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home. Dotty L. Altenhofen - November 09, 1939 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Lewistown)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy “Dotty” Lou Altenhofen, age 84, passed away January 27th, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. Dotty was born on November 9th, 1939 in Fort Benton, Montana to Clifford and Katherine Scribner. She was the youngest of five children.
Dotty grew up in Geraldine, Montana, graduating high school in 1957. She attended Montana State University for a year before moving to Lewistown, where she began working at a Chinese restaurant in the Burke Hotel with her sister, Shirley. During that time a young man named Tom Altenhofen began coming in for coffee each day, and according to Dot, the coffee was not that good. While working at the restaurant, Dot’s father, Cliff asked her and Shirley where they wanted to go on vacation. They chose Mardi Gras and traveled to New Orleans in his big Cadillac. They had a great time, but two days after returning to Lewistown, the hotel burnt down. Not long after, Tom asked her out for a date. After a short romance, the two were married on Valentine’s Day in 1959.
After their marriage, Dotty began working at the Central Montana Livestock Auction, which was owned by her father-in-law, Al Altenhofen. The entire family worked at the auction and she became very close to her sister-in-law, Margaret. On her first day of work there was a big sheep sale, Dot wrote up a sale ticket for a load of “U”s. Tom chuckled and said we don’t spell it that way. She quickly learned the business and continued to work at the auction even after it changed hands in the mid 70’s. During this time, she also worked for Burke Motors.
In 1978, Dot and her good friend Jean Lewis began working as dispatchers for the Fergus County Sheriff’s Department. She was well liked and respected by all in the department, including the “guests.” This job afforded Dot the opportunity to wear her favorite color “brown” day after day. She retired in 2006 after 28 years of service to Fergus County.
Some of Dot’s fondest memories growing up were the times she spent with her older brother and sisters. When she was nine years old, Dot lived with her sister, Maxine and her husband, Ralph Peterson in Neihart and attended school there. They were young school teachers and lived in two small cabins, bedroom in one, kitchen in the other. Winters were cold, but it was quite an adventure. Dotty also spent summers helping her sister, Cubby and Cubby’s husband, Matt Buck on their farm near Geraldine.
Dot had lifelong friendships with many of her high school classmates. They often gathered, even into their 80’s, for “girls’ weekends.” She also enjoyed attending “cousins’ campouts”, yearly gatherings held in the mountains and an extended family gathering on Labor Day Weekend – The Scribner Pig Out, which was in St. Regis, Montana. She also loved the Cowboy Poetry events and going to concerts with her good friend, Wanda Roberts.
Dotty loved the Veteran’s Day Program at the Junior High School and was in attendance every year to watch her son stand as a veteran and listen to the “Sergeant at Arms” Tom Killham.
While raising her family, she enjoyed watching the kids participate in events and sports. The house was often a “hang out” for friends and family. Tom and Dot traveled to many Griz football games. She even got to fire the cannon at a game.
Dotty loved to shop, especially when it came to shoes. She had an eye for fashion and looked good in whatever she wore. Later in life, Dotty loved the summer visits from her Minnesota and Montana grandkids. All of her friends and family have great memories of Dot’s storytelling and kindness. There was a special place in her heart for all her nieces and nephews as well. Each one knowing they had their own unique relationship and memories of time spent with her. She will be greatly missed by all. Dotty loved Old English Sheepdogs and raised several. Her favorite saying was, “We walk by faith, not by sight.”
Dotty was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; parents, Kate and Cliff Scribner; sisters, Maxine Peterson, Cubby Buck and Shirley Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, Kari Altenhofen, Missoula, MT; son, Kevin (Michelle) Altenhofen, St. Michael, MN; son, Kelly Altenhofen, New Orleans, LA; brother, Clifford “Bud” Scribner, Great Falls, MT; brother-in-law, James Altenhofen, Miles City, MT; as well as five grandchildren: Kelsey, Walker, Tanner, Gracie and Chloe; and two great-grandchildren: James and Shirley.

Vickie Lyn Dubbs - January 13, 1958 - January 13, 2024

Departed: 01/13/2024 (Lewistown)
Obituary Preview: Vickie Lyn Dubbs, being supported and surrounded by her family, passed away from lung cancer on her 66th birthday, January 13, 2024, after many years of battling cancer and other serious health issues. Believing in God, she faced those health challenges head-on and was not afraid of death.
Vickie was the third of four children, born in Harlowton on January 13, 1958, to Ollie and Audrey Smail. In her early years, she and her family lived in several communities as the family traveled with her father’s construction work. She attended grade school in Lewistown, later moving home to Stanford. Being bright and inquisitive, Vickie and her brother were usually in some sort of mischief, but she became a voracious reader and an excellent student, graduating early from Stanford High School before attending Montana State University. Vickie was a lifelong worker whether she was babysitting, working with her father on ranches or helping her mom at home, as well as lifeguarding and waitressing before college.
At MSU, she met Scott Dubbs, where the two fell deeply in love. They were married on Labor Day weekend, September 5th, 1976 in Lewistown before returning to college together that fall. They worked to support each other at school and were blessed with two children, Kyle and Letha. After college, Vickie, Scott, and the children were fortunate to live and work in the Montana communities of Harlowton, Arlee, and Lewistown. She worked in child care, at local schools, newspapers, banks and as a librarian for the Lewistown Public Library. Her career at the library was a reader’s dream come true and she loved every minute of inspiring others through books and historical materials. She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi.
Vickie was always meticulous, whether in her housekeeping, organizing, work or personal style. She always decorated for the holidays and loved hosting family gatherings. She was revered as the top chef in the family, a homemaker without peer, and a gifted seamstress and interior designer. Like her mother, Vickie could create anything. Her artistic and creative talent was shared with all and she was a friend to many. Vickie was a diehard redhead by nature, who loved family fiercely, spoke her mind, and seldom held back advice. She could be tough and brutally honest but loved to help her friends and others. At events, Vickie preferred to be in the background helping others, but was noticeably (fashionably) late often. Her wit and laughter were contagious to all.
While she would say that Scott was the love of her life, he paled in comparison to her grandchildren. Vickie rarely missed her children’s and grandchildren’s many activities over the years, forever their #1 supporter and fan in the stands. Her grandchildren will tell you that their Grammy was not only a prominent figure and protector in each of their lives but was at the center in some of their most cherished memories of life, ones that were filled with happiness, laughter, and love.
Vickie leaves behind her husband of 47 years, Scott Dubbs; her son, Kyle (Stefanie) Dubbs and her daughter, Letha (Zach) Manning, all of Lewistown; sisters, Leslie (Don) Rich of Kalispell and Teresa (Jim) Diercks of Bozeman; brother, Ward Smail of Stanford; granddaughters, Josie Dubbs and Amarah Manning; grandsons, Aidan Manning, Tyson and Taylor Dubbs; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and “adopted” family members. Vickie was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Audrey Smail; many aunts and uncles, as well as her grandparents.
Vickie and her indomitable spirit will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to call her sister, wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lewistown. A reception will follow at the Council on Aging. Donations may be given to Central Montana Tough Enough to Wear Pink, the Lewistown Public Library, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home. Lawrence J. Vanek - September 09, 1945 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Lewistown)
Obituary Preview: Lawrence “Larry” James Vanek was born September 9, 1945, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Lewistown, Montana to Stanley and Deloris Vanek. He was raised on the family ranch South of Brooks. He attended elementary school in Brooks and then Fergus County High School in Lewistown. After graduation in 1963, he worked for Anderson Buick Pontiac and then moved on to Buttrey Foods where he learned how to be a meat cutter, which he continued to do for most of his working career.
Larry proudly served in the Army Reserves for over 20 years. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. He was a proud veteran and one of the most patriotic men you could ever meet. Upon retirement, he had the vision to construct a Veteran’s Memorial Park in Lewistown to honor all of the veterans from Central Montana who served in each of the armed forces. He got others on board with his idea and eagerly raised money to see this dream come true. Family, friends, and visitors can now visit this beautiful park, which overlooks Big Spring Creek and Lewistown, year-round.
Larry liked to be involved in his community. He was a member of the VFW and served as commander for many years. He served on the Central Montana Historical Association board and spent many hours volunteering at the Central Montana Museum. He loved visiting with people about his town and the outlying area with its many treasures found there, one of which was an arrowhead collection gathered by his own family on their ranch in Brooks. He also volunteered at the Junior High School.
He instilled in his children the importance of family, working hard and taking time to enjoy life. He loved to go on adventures whether it was hunting, fishing, soaking up the sun at Warm Springs, taking long drives up in the mountains, listening to records on his old record player, fixing up cars, or sipping a beer with a friend in one of the local bars. He was always game to do something. He was rarely seen without his cowboy hat and cowboy boots, much to his children’s dismay, even when wearing shorts and his old favorite orange tank top. He usually had a garden, lots of flowers, and enjoyed watching the birds and other animals that would venture into his yard. He also spent some time writing and was a wonderful photographer.
Throughout his younger years, Larry lived in many different towns in Montana. He also lived in other states in the northwest, including Wyoming and Oregon. His farthest move was to Florida to join his son, Jim, and family. However, no matter where Larry went, he always ended up back in Lewistown. Shortly after surviving COVID in Florida, he made his last move back to Lewistown to be close to his siblings.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Stanley and Deloris Vanek; step-son, Donovan Orman; brothers-in-law, Ken Ward and Russell Fairbairn; nephews, Al Ward and Pat Vanek; and great-nephew, Brian Pierce. He is survived by his son, Lawrence James “Jim” Vanek II (Tonya) of Florida; his daughter, Sheila Nyquest (Shane) of Alaska; three sisters, Barb Ward, Lois Fairbairn, Donna Skogen (Neil) of Great Falls; his brothers, Leonard Vanek (Diane) of Silesia, Leon Vanek (Kathy) of Brooks and Ronnie Vanek (Annette) of Stockett; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Larry Vanek, 78, passed away Friday, January 12, 2024. Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 18th, 11:00 a.m. at Central Montana Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home. Larry’s family and friends can share memories and condolences at www.creelfuneralhome.com

Nathaniel Scott Rogers - March 11, 1984 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (Lewistown)
Obituary Preview: Nathaniel Scott Rogers of Utica, MT passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2024, at the age of 39 from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Nathan was born March 11, 1984, in Bozeman, MT to Kolleen (Fiechtner) Rogers and Peter B. Rogers. His family moved back to the Rogers Ranch in the Little Belt Mountains in early 1986, where he spent his childhood hunting, trapping, fishing, riding horses, motorcycles, and 4-wheelers. He was also active in 4-H. He attended K-12 at Hobson School, graduating in 2002.
He was a self-proclaimed “mountain man” and was most at peace in the mountains fly fishing or hunting. Many people have said to us over the years that they would want him with them if they were ever stranded in the wilderness. He always said he was going to write a book about his life and adventures, and that it would be a best seller.
His children were his world, and he was happiest when he was with them. He loved taking them hunting and fishing and on their many adventures. He adored his nieces and nephew. He had a heart for kids and even with his rugged mountain man appearance they gravitated towards him.
He worked numerous jobs over the years, including working for his grandfather at Quality Foundation Company. Most recently he was raising pheasants, Brittany Spaniels, and Bluetick Hounds, hoping to guide hunters.
Even though he endured many struggles in his life, he had a huge heart and always wanted to help others. He told us often that he was destined for greater things, and just last week, that this was going to be his best year ever. His final selfless act of donating his organs gives us some comfort knowing he will live on in others. He was a hero and legend in death; as he always wanted to be in life.
He was a beloved father, son, brother, brother-in-law, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, and will be deeply missed. He is finally at peace.
He is survived by his children, Aden [Kennedy], Helena, MT; Ben and Betsy [Heather], Cassopolis, MI; parents, Kolleen Rogers, Lewistown, MT; Peter Rogers and Conni Kaufman, Moccasin, MT; brother, Benjamin Rogers, his wife, Jaclyn and children, Elli and Bear, Utica, MT; sister, Jennifer (Rogers) Wichman, her husband, Jacob and daughter, Teagan, Cascade Locks, OR; grandmother, Leta Fiechtner, Great Falls, MT; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
