Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and often include information about the person's life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing an obituary as part of their services. In some cases, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to write the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or charitable organizations they were involved with.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested information.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or FuneralHome.com. These websites often provide templates and guidance to help you create and share the obituary.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals that include additional services like photo uploads or online memorials. Online platforms may offer free or paid options.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline depends on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Typically, it takes 1-3 days for an obituary to be published in print. Online obituaries are usually published immediately after submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

If you need to make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly. They will guide you through their correction process.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing, you can opt for a private or limited-obituary option. This might be suitable for small family gatherings or intimate celebrations of life.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise in reflection and self-expression. It can also ensure that your life story is told accurately and authentically.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, date of death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary isn't desired or feasible.

What is a memorial page?

A memorial page is an online tribute where friends and family can share memories, condolences, and photos of the deceased. It serves as a virtual gathering place for those who want to celebrate the person's life.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable organizations or causes that were important to their loved one. This allows friends and acquaintances to make donations in lieu of flowers or other gestures.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also maintain archives of past newspapers and obituaries.

Can I reprint an old obituary?

Contact the original publication or copyright holder for permission to reprint an old obituary. Be prepared to provide context and explain your reason for re-publishing.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and sharing biographical information. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with friends and acquaintances. You can also create a memorial page or group on these platforms.

How do I handle condolences on social media?

If you're sharing news of a loved one's passing on social media, be prepared for condolences and messages from friends and acquaintances. Respond graciously and acknowledge their support during this difficult time.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to consider your audience and avoid anything that might offend or upset others.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to emotional distress or lack of information, consider seeking help from a trusted friend, family member, or professional writer. Funeral homes may also offer guidance or resources.

Can I update an online obituary over time?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to update an obituary with new information, photos, or stories over time. This can help keep the memory alive and continue celebrating the person's life.
