Obituary Preview: Dr. Gene Hanson, a resident of Dothan, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Luverne Health and Rehab in Luverne, Alabama. He was 89.
Funeral Services for Dr. Hanson will be held at 1 PM Friday, April 8, 2022 in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage with Rev. Tim Willis officiating and Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow at 4 PM in Olive Branch Baptist Church cemetery in Owassa, Alabama with Cope-Keahey Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12:45 PM prior to the service at Southern Heritage.
Dr. Hanson was born March 1, 1933 in Cragford, Alabama to the late A D Hanson and Danver Satterfield Hanson. He was raised in Wedowee, Alabama and graduated from Jacksonville State University and later earned his Doctorate from Auburn University. He served in the United States Army, and later retired from the Army National Guard. Dr. Hanson was an exceptional athlete and played football for Auburn, Jacksonville State, and while in the military. He taught at Jacksonville State and later retired from Troy University. He enjoyed officiating high school football and basketball through the years. While serving in the Army he was an honored member of the 82nd Airborne and made 49 jumps. Dr. Hanson is a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
Dr. Hanson is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Adele New; brothers, Edsel, Buren and Kermit Hanson; grandson, Caleb Q. Walker.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Hogan-Hanson; daughters, Hannah Jean Jacobs, Aneta Walker (Sami Q); sons, Hunter Kerr Hanson (Rosemary), Thomas V. Hogan; grandchildren, Emory Hunter Hanson, Sushannah Wynn Hanson White (Jeffery), Thomas Hunter Hanson Jacobs, John C. Flowers, Jacob C. Obituary Preview: John Greel Ralls, Sr., 91, son of Ed and Bessie Ralls, was born in Brooklyn, AL on August 13, 1930. He passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at The Blake in Pensacola, FL.
John was the youngest of six children and is preceded by his siblings, Mary Ellen Knowles, Edward Ralls, Loree Hamiter, Mutt Ralls and Grady Ralls.
John was an excellent athlete and avid sportsman his entire life. He graduated from Evergreen High School where he was all state in football while also excelling in basketball, baseball, and track. He was highly recruited by both Alabama and Auburn before deciding to attend Auburn where he led the freshman team as a running back. John also played semi-pro baseball for a number of years after his days at Auburn.
John married Jean Enzor of Andalusia, AL and had two children, John Greel Ralls, Jr. and Lesa Ralls Johnson. John had four grandchildren, Hannah Avery, John Perry Johnson, Rob Johnson and Katherine Nalty Ralls, and two great grandchildren, Jonah and Addie Avery.
John Greel, as he was known to friends and family, led a successful business career as a real estate developer and entrepreneur. He served on the City of Evergreen Industrial Board for many years and was the last living founder of Sparta Academy, where he served as one of the four original board members for many years. He loved his horses, and his many dogs named Jake. The most current Jake has been his close companion for the past eight years.
A Graveside Service will be held 10:00am Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Brooklyn Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Ralls, Josh Pate, John Perry Johnson, John Avery, Rob Johnson, Lynn Ralls, Glynn Ralls, and Gil Ralls.
Honorary pallbearers will be Grady Ralls, Bubba Hamiter, Eddie Ralls, Jim Hamiter, McGhee Ralls, Bob Ralls, O. B. Petrey, Bob Neeley, Robert Thomas, and Teddy Watts.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that a contribution be made in his memory to either the Brooklyn Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or a tax-deductible donation to Sparta Academy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie T. Elliott and Dora Mae Riley Elliott, brothers, Rex Elliott and Terrell Elliott.
Mr. Elliott served in the United States Army and was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries sustained during the Vietnam War; Kendall retired from Conecuh Sausage Company after over 40 years of service in various roles. He will be greatly missed.

She was an active member of Bower Memorial Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher, director of WMU and was on a number of committees. She helped with many projects in the community over the years. She loved to cook and sew for her granddaughter. Also to bake cakes and spend time with her family.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am., Friday, March 4, 2022 at Cope-Keahey Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jim Griffin and Neal Butler will be officiating. Mrs. Martha Carolyn Patterson was a lifelong resident of Castleberry. She was loving mother of 2 girls Lynn Smith, Toni Patterson and 1 boy Lee Paterson. She was a loving wife for years to Glenn Patterson until he passed in 2007 but they are reunited in heaven having a goodtime. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her 3 great-grandkids, Bentley, Emma and Cayleigh. She worked at Knud Nielson in Evergreen for a few years. She was a caretaker for Ola Mecham for years in Castleberry. She also took care of Pauline Henderson for years as a homemaker. Her hobby was going window shopping as she called it. Even if she couldn’t buy nothing, that was always her favorite things. Toni, Lynn, David, Bentley stood by her side for 15 years or better and loved her till her last breath was taken.
Graveside Services will be held 2:00 pm., Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Welcome Cemetery with Rev. Mark Gray officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 12:00 pm., until 1:00 pm., Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at her home. Cope-Keahey Funeral Home is entrusted will these arrangements.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Betty Hart Ellis, 89, of Evergreen passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Dothan, Alabama.
She was born on November 14, 1932 in the Old Town Community in Conecuh County. Betty attendedschool at Fairnelson School, then schools in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Crewe, Virginia before returning to Conecuh County where she attended Lyeffion School and Evergreen City School.
She graduated from Evergreen High School in 1951 as salutatorian of her class.Betty married Harry Ellis of Castleberry, Alabama on January 13, 1952.  They had two children, Rachel and John Hart, who were born and raised in Conecuh County.
After working as the bookkeeper for the Evergreen Motor Car Company (Warren Ford Company) for 15 years, Betty and Harry, along with Charles and Mary Evelyn Burt, purchased Miller Trading Company in Evergreen in January 1966. She served as bookkeeper, office manager and “girl Friday” until the business was sold in December 1993.
Betty was an active member of Evergreen United Methodist Church for over 70 years and served in many capacities throughout the years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Ellis, her parents, Gladys Burt Hart and John Elisha Hart. Betty is survived by her daughter, Rachel (Ellis) Golson of Dothan, Alabama and son, John Hart Ellis (Janice) of Allentown, Florida. In addition, she is survived by 4 grandchildren, Adam Golson (Brittany), Amber Davis (Kyle), Lauren Peaden (Jonathan) and Amanda Parratt (Lee) and 8 great-grandchildren,
Ava Golson, Mary Ellis Golson, Emma Davis, Brody Davis, Sarah Abram, Wesleigh Outland, Elisha Parratt and Ezra Parratt.
The family would like to thank Corona Pate, Marty Peavy, Willie Mae Lee, Annie and Herman Matthews, and Regina Whatley for their kind and loving care of “Miss Betty”.
Graveside Services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Magnolia Cemetery in Evergreen. Rev. Joseph Bush will be officiating. Cope-Keahey Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
