Lurline Wright - July 22, 1927 - January 17, 2022

Departed: 01/17/2022 (Sylvania)
Obituary Preview: Obituary
Lurline Zeigler Wright, born on July 22, 1927 in Sylvania, Georgia to Emma & Fred Ziegler, (nicknamed Aunt Love) was the second youngest of six children. Lurl (another nickname) was a strong-willed and feisty child who learned early in life what she believed in and how to stand up for herself.
Lurline's mother died when she was 12 years old, and she was then raised by her father and grandmother. She had to leave school after the 7th grade, but her passion for education and seeking the opportunities it created never ceased. Later at the age of 22, Lurline moved from Sylvania to Harlem, New York, wrapped in what was the Great Migration of her time. She rose every day at 4:30 to take two buses to work at Fancy Foods, where she processed poultry. Lurline had a twinkle in her eye just before she bellowed with laughter or gave you a curt redress – and in those moments, one could see all the fire of life that was bundled in her soul.
However, not one for the Harlem night scene – including famous places like the Savoy or Bittenwoods – she much preferred singing in the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church Gospel Choir and her crocheting and sewing. Most of all, she loved to spend time with family and to be surrounded by the ones she loved.
On April 9, 1955, Lurline married her childhood sweetheart, Millard Wright, who moved up from Florida to find her again. Together they had two children, Barbara Millicena Wright and Lorraine Wright. It is here where her greatest life journey began. She raised her daughters with class and dignity, often taking and later sending them to the library to read. Her eldest, Barbara, was the first in their family to go to college, and Lorraine was the first to earn a master’s degree. Both children grew up to pursue careers helping others in education and children’s social work – in large part due to the influence of their mother and father.
One of Lurline’s greatest joys was the birth of her only grandchild, Zachary Hodges. After the death of Barbara’s husband, Tony Hodges, Lurline and Millard stepped in to help raise Zachary while his mother worked three jobs. Just as her grandmother did for her, Lurline sought to ensure the prosperity of her grandchild. She and Millard bestowed the same values on Zachary as they did their children. They would spend hours reading books to him and taking him on weekend adventures. It was Lurline who taught Zachary how to pray.
On Saturdays, Millard would take Zachary to the farmers market and buy an entire pig belly and then take it home to Lurline, who would cut it up into bacon and cook it. Then they would eat it all that morning with homemade grits, eggs, and hash browns. She would stand over her family and watch as they ate every bite of it. Lurline was a phenomenal southern style cook. Her family didn't have to tell her this – but they did anyway.
Once when Zachary was six, he was being bullied outside in the park for his dark skin. He walked home with his head down, dejected. When “Grandma” heard why he came home, she sent him back outside and said he could not come back in until he faced his bullies. She told him he did not have to fight them, but he also did not have to accept how they treated him. When he finally came home hours later with a new self-respect, Lurline did not congratulate Zack but carried on as if nothing had happened. She knew no one can give you self-respect. You must stand for it on your own.
When Zachary graduated from Harvard in 2015 and Lurline received his diploma, it was the crown jewel to her life's work. She had never seen the campus, met the professors, or read any of the books, but all the same, the diploma was hers. There is no greater epitome of the Black American story than what Lurline built in her family – and they are grateful for it.
In the twilight of her life, Lurline loved to be the elder sage at family gatherings, like her grandnephew Derrick’s cook outs or the Scott Family Reunions. She would play with the toddlers or bask in pampering from her cousins. It is here where her nickname Aunt Love stuck. Watching them baby her, her children and grandchildren would roll their eyes knowing that she had them all fooled.
On January 17, 2022, at the age of 94, Lurline passed away, her life abundantly full and ready to see her maker. She lived a long, quiet, and simple life, assured by the pride that she had pushed her family further.
She leaves behind a daughter, Lorraine, and grandson, Zachary, along with all her nieces and nephews and descendants: Bill Brown (Lois), Ezra Brown (Edna), Alfred Brown (Lucille), Rodger Brown (Gloria), (Mossell), Carl Brown (Barbara), (Maggie Brown) and her best friend Carrie from First Baptist Church of Atlanta. In addition to her parents and son-in-law, she was predeceased by her siblings Tom Zeigler, Alex Zeigler, Annie Zeigler, Fred Zeigler, her niece Rose Merry Taylor, her daughter Barbara Wright, and her husband Millard Wright, whom she will now rest alongside.
We are proud to have Lurline as our mother and grandmother who laid the foundation for our family. There are years that ask questions and there are years that answer. To the question of life, Lurline Wright answered with respect, dignity, and love. Let us never forget. Amen.

Billy J Brown - October 17, 1943 - November 15, 2021

Departed: 11/15/2021 (Sylvania)
Obituary Preview: On October 17, 1943, Billy J Brown entered this world as a preemie, to the late Billy and Cleo Brown in Bulloch County, Georgia.  Bill as he was affectionately known, was the eldest child of seven. As a young child Bill was reared by his paternal grandmother, Adell, in the Nevils community. It was there in Nevils that he began his formal education and learned of Christ. There in the lush greenery, open skies and the red clay is where he enjoyed the company and kinship of his large extended family.
During the early 1950’s the family migrated to Philadelphia, leaving behind their world of familiarity and Family. Now, in Philadelphia, Bill took on his role as older brother and greatly assisted in caring for his younger siblings, while his parents worked. He was tough, yet most dependable! He continued his education in the Philadelphia Parochial and Public-school systems. Bill as a youngster became quite industrious and mastered the art of Shoe shining, the start to his many endeavors as a lifelong entrepreneur. He was also quite popular in his neighborhood. He always liked to gather with family and friends. He enjoyed riding horses in his Philadelphia neighborhood, renting them from local stables. He loved a good time. Bill was known to be free and easy: while at the same time vigilant and wild. He had a great love for fast cars and was a supreme driver too! The, he was named “Wild Bill” by his neighborhood friends.
In 1963, Bill welcomed a beautiful Baby girl, Vanessa, to the family fold. Throughout the 1960’s and the early 1970’s he enjoyed working in downtown Philly, as a Parking Lot Attendant, along side his cousins Val and Charles. The three of them loved it and had loads of stories they shared about their time in the industry. During these time Bill enjoyed the sounds of R&B and loved The Impressions & Curtis Mayfield, The Isley Brothers, and The Temptations. While still living in the family home, he kept the family with a beloved pooch from German Shephard sot Dobbermans.
By 1974, Bill finally settled down with the love of his life, Cheryl and started a family. Bill and Cheryl added two sons to the family fold, Billy Daniel and Brian Christopher. It was also during this time, Bill was being heralded by his family, as an awesome uncle to his many nephews and nieces. “Uncle Bill” was the family GOAT. Soon after Billy was born, Bill had had enough of the big city and relocated his family to his first hometown.  Arriving with the family of three was their beloved dog Goliath, a beautiful Great Dane, a gentle giant.
In 1985 the family was completed with Brian Christopher. As a family man, Bill worked as a laborer and retired from the workforce in the early 2000’s Upon retirement, as a Machinist at ITT Grinnell, Bill, resumed a free and easy life which included his love of Cannibis and was able to enjoy time with his family whom he cherished.
Bill was proceeded in death by his wife Cheryl; two grandsons, Ruben and Liam; two brothers, John and Lee; and his beloved nephew Quincy.
Our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend, leaves to morn in his loss: One daughter, Vanessa McClain (Leon) of Philadelphia: Two sons: Billy D. Brown Sr. and Brian C.
