Abdul Jalal Karim-Bey - September 21, 1942 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Abdul Jalal Karim-Bey, born as Moddie Hines on September 21,1942, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, peacefully passed away on April 8, 2024, in Wilmington, Delaware at the age of 81, following a brief illness. He was the beloved son of Mr. & Mrs. EC Hines (Mary).
Jalal's educational journey began in the Chattanooga public school system, culminating in his graduation from Howard High. However, his true inspiration was found under the teachings of Noble Drew Ali from the Moorish Science Temple of America. This left a lasting impact on him and those around him.
In 1967, seeking new opportunities, Jalal left Chattanooga for Ohio before settling in Washington, DC, where his passion for community activism blossomed. During his time in DC, he welcomed a beautiful daughter, Shahidah, into the world in 1972.
Subsequently, Jalal made Wilmington, DE, his home, becoming an integral part of the community-based organization, Black Mans Development Center (BMDC). He dedicated himself to civic-minded initiatives, promoting self-development, advocating for the unfairly incarcerated youth within the Delaware penal system, counseling the disabled, and guiding young men away from violence and drug use.
Jalal's family life was equally meaningful. He met Saleema on a rainy night, and from that moment, he was determined and would not take no for an answer. Their love story blossomed, leading to a marriage that was as enduring as it was passionate. Together, they raised six (6) children: Rashid, Shahidah, Jalal Muhammad, Mustafa, Zayid, and Mecca. Their union, officially sealed in 1978, was a testament to their unwavering commitment, deep love, and shared vision of building a strong, supportive family unit.
A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, Jalal was renowned for his generosity, mentorship, and unwavering support for young men in need of guidance. He is survived by his children Shahidah (Kip), Rashid (Tracey), Jalal Muhammad, Mustafa (Peaches), Zayid (Alicia), and Mecca, along with eleven grandchildren: Kaila, Japria, Jaeda, Bryce, Rashid, Khai, Jabril, Alim, Aaliyah, Sadiq, and Xolani. Additionally, he is survived by two brothers, Cecil Hines & Earl Hines, three sisters-in-law, Theodosia (John), Raylyne (Gregory), and Rosalyn (Cedric); brother-in-law John (Aletha), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and devoted friends.
Jalal Karim-Bey's legacy of compassion, activism, and self-empowerment will continue to inspire all who know him. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Saleema C Karim-Bey; sister, Ernestine; 4 brothers, Willie Hines, EC Hines, Clyde, and Jerome, and sister-in-law Rhonda.  His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, yet his spirit lives on through the countless lives he touched and the positive changes he brought to his community and beyond.
Jalal's dedication to his community extended beyond his immediate family, as he actively participated in local events, mentored youth, and supported initiatives aimed at fostering a stronger, more united society. His advocacy for justice and equality resonated deeply with those who knew him, earning him the respect and admiration of friends, colleagues, and community members alike. His absence will be keenly felt, but his legacy of kindness, resilience, and activism will endure for generations to come, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.
Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Congo Funeral Home, 2317 N Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19802. The Congo Funeral Home in Wilmington, Delaware, is assisting with the arrangements for Jalal's passing.

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Hezekiah Thomas Harmon Jr., beloved husband of Rev. Dr. Janet M. Harmon and son of the late Rev. Hezekiah T. Harmon Sr. and Nellie R. Harmon, was born on January 2, 1938, in Wilmington, Delaware.  He departed this life on Friday, April 5, 2024, at home surrounded by family.
He was the first born of five siblings and was affectionally known as Hez, Hun, Junior, Brother, Daddy, Poppop, Pop(s), Uncle Hez, and Bossman.
After attending Howard High School, Hez married the love of his life, Janet M. Anderson, on August 1, 1954. Five children were born from this union whom he loved deeply and for whom he worked diligently to provide and protect.. He had a very strong work ethic which started at Hoy's 5 & 10 on Union Street in Wilmington, DE and lasted for 27 years. He began in stock, working his way up to Assistant Manager, Manager, then Buyer for Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania locations, becoming the first African American Manager in their history. Even after breaking his hip, Hez would still travel to New York on crutches to fulfill his duties as a Buyer. He also served as a vice president. Hez worked several other jobs and enjoyed a  25-year career with General Motors. Hezekiah was influential in the construction of several churches in New Castle County. He was a master builder and was instrumental in building not only his own home, but the homes of his parents, children, and several others within the community. His building projects even expanded outside of the community, consisting of additions and renovations all along the east coast. The work Hezekiah accomplished continues to speak for him today due to his motto: “If we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it RIGHT.” He was a determined designer and innovator, known for being a jack-of-all trades.
Following retirement from General Motors, Hezekiah enjoyed taking care of his grands and great grands, which would typically result in a house full of children sleeping over. He was a hard-working pillar of strength and support. Family was very important to him. He would do anything for them, including having an elevator installed in their home for his beloved Janet. Hezekiah loved everyone and was always willing to help anyone in need. Outside of work, he was notorious for both his sense of fashion and quick wit. His gold rings matched his ever-present gold chains, which coordinated with the gold teeth in his smile. Hez had a ‘no-nonsense’ approach, pulling no punches and always shooting straight from the hip. He was generous and willing to give loved ones all that he could, including his two cents concerning any subject. He was a protector, provider and supporter with a big heart, sharing his loving kindness with all.
Hezekiah was a child of GOD, an original member of the Covington Ensemble, and a lifetime member of The Simpson United Methodist Church that he loved, served, and enjoyed. Old gospel hymns were his favorite, especially "Just A Closer Walk With Thee."  He enjoyed watching, listening, and singing along to gospel videos. He would sing with his hands folded together over his chest or in the air, praising GOD. He would often talk about how thankful he was for the Goodness of GOD.
Hez enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends whether at home or while on vacation. There were several large family trips over the years, including driving vans full of all the grandchildren down to Disney World during the summer of 1991. One of his favorite trips was to Virginia Beach, VA to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary in August of 2022. He was so grateful to have his family members gathered that he continued to share pictures of his memory book with visitors long after the trip. For years, he was his beloved wife Janet's primary care giver, ensuring she wanted for nothing.
Hezekiah is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Hezekiah T. Harmon Sr. and Nellie R. Harmon, brothers, Bill Harmon and David Harmon, and daughter, Donna Lewis.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Rev. Dr. Janet M. Maria Tomasa Espada Ward - May 28, 1948 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Maria Tomasa Espada Ward, born on May 28, 1948 in the Republic of Panama, to the late Candelario and Christina Espada, has embarked on her final journey to be with her Lord. Affectionately known to her husband and siblings as "Chachita," she was a remarkable soul who touched the lives of many with her generous warmth, resilient spirit, and unwavering faith. Maria was a woman of dignity and strength (Proverbs 31:25).
Maria's relationship with God was nurtured from an early age in the Catholic tradition. But, it was Maria's conversion and baptism in the Pentecostal tradition in 1989 at Holy Light Church (Burlington, New Jersey) under the leadership of Pastor Marguerite Hannah where her faith in Jesus Christ became the dominant force in her life--a faith that would sustain her through life's twists and turns. She loved the Lord with her whole heart (Matthew 22:37), and she showed it.
Maria's journey began in the seaport city of Colón, Panama, traditionally known as Panama's second city. Maria's humble beginnings would define a posture of gratitude and generosity that would follow her for a lifetime, leaving a permanent mark on everyone she encountered.
At the tender age of 14, Maria found her first love in Carlos Ward Sr. at a Back to School dance in June of 1962 as the song "Duke of Earl" filled the gymnasium. This quaint love story would grow across two countries for more than sixty beautiful years. During this span, they established a vibrant home in New York/New Jersey bustling with six children--Dalia, Carlos Jr., Terry, Louis, Tyron, and Chris. Maria's devotion to her children was boundless, making them her everything. From the youngest age, her tireless message to them was Unity is Strength, Strength is Power. It was Maria's dedication to her family through acts of service, words of affirmation, and old-fashioned hard work that created an environment where all could flourish in their own individuality and gifts. Maria was a woman of quiet strength and confidence, embodying the biblical words of Isaiah, "In quietness and confidence is your strength" (Isaiah 30:15). This characteristic not only defined her parenting style but also forged lasting connections with others.
As grandmom, Maria, was loved by ALL of her grandchildren. She was a vibrant tapestry of memories, each thread woven with love, laughter, and a touch of feistiness. She was more than just "grandma"; she was the magnet for each gathering as she lovingly doted over each one, showering them with food, gifts, and memorable experiences. For her grandchildren, Maria's generosity was practically boundless. With her warm smile and embrace, she turned ordinary moments into extraordinary ones, and her zest for family was an inspiration to us all.
For Maria there were no greater joys than celebrating the successes of her children and grandchildren. Yet, there were several opportunities where the family proudly celebrated her including her U.S. citizenship naturalization which she completed in 1986 along with several of her children. Also, in the midst of a full life schedule, Maria received her GED (high school diploma) to the cheers and adulation of a proud family.
As an immigrant to the United States, life did not offer Maria and her family a proverbial "bed of roses."  Life was a delicate balance of mothering a family and partnering with her husband to build a financial foundation for a growing family. As with many immigrant families, for Maria this meant wearing multiple vocational hats including cashier positions at various restaurant and grocery retail organizations which capitalized on her natural money skills, mail sorting at nights for the United States Postal Service, and ultimately a career position as a payroll analyst for Burlington Coat Factory which she held until her retirement in 2006. But, Maria along with her husband was also a serial entrepreneur which included ventures as a seafood store proprietor (Maria's Convenient Seafood Store), licensed real estate agent with Century 21 and Weichert Realtors in the State of New Jersey, and owners/landlords of multiple South Jersey rental properties.
Maria's impact on countless lives cannot be measured, as her authenticity and generosity for service left an enduring mark on those she encountered. She had a unique gift for making people feel seen and loved. Her voice, a calm storm when it needed to be, could deliver a scolding, provide comfort, and invoke laughter, all at once.  Maria used her God-given gift to bring solace and guidance to those she loved.
Things began to change in 2013. During a routine doctor's visit with her husband, Maria shared with the doctor some memory concerns that she was having. Over the ten plus years since, the insidious tentacles of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease slowly robbed Maria of many of her trademark gifts and mannerisms. As the disease progressed and she became confined by her physical and mental limitations, Maria was blessed to have those whom she had faithfully served for so long become the ones who gladly served her.
Marie T. Ward has left a legacy of faith, love, and generosity that will be cherished by her family and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her physical journey on this earth has come to an end, but her indomitable spirit continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched. Maria (Chachita, Mami, Moms, Grandma) we bid you farewell with love and gratitude, knowing that you are now in the loving arms of your Savior, where you longed to be. In the words of Proverbs 31:28-29, "Your children stand and bless you. Your husband praises you. There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all."
Maria leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Carlos Ward, Sr., her 6 children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 3 siblings.
Her funeral services will take place 11am, Friday, April 12, 2024 at New Direction Baptist Church, 103 Rogers Rd., Unit B, New Castle, DE 19720. There will be a public viewing from 10:00 am until 10:45 am only.
Mrs. Ward will be laid to rest 11 am, Wednesday, May 15, 2024 in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701.
