Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist in writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to enhance the tribute and make it more personal.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

Contact the newspaper or online obituary platform directly to learn about their submission process and guidelines. Some may require a funeral home or mortuary to submit the obituary on behalf of the family.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or free listings. Online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to ensure accuracy.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

Most online obituary platforms keep tributes active for an extended period, sometimes indefinitely. However, it's best to check with the specific platform for their archiving policies.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituaries as a way to reflect on their life and leave a final message for loved ones. This can also help alleviate the burden on family members during a difficult time.

Is it appropriate to include humorous or lighthearted content in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help celebrate their life and bring comfort to those who are grieving.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable organizations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have copies of old newspapers or records that can be accessed.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?
